Structural, compositional, and biomechanical alterations of the lumbar spine in rats with mucopolysaccharidosis type VI (Maroteaux–Lamy syndrome)
Abstract
Mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) VI is an inherited lysosomal storage disorder resulting from deficiency of N‐acetylgalactosamine‐4‐sulfatase activity and subsequent accumulation of incompletely degraded dermatan sulfate (DS) containing glycosaminoglycans (GAGs). Painful spinal deformities are commonly found in MPS VI patients. We characterized lumbar spine structure, composition, and biomechanics in a naturally occurring rat MPS VI model and evaluated the role of MMP‐13, ADAMTS‐5 and TNF‐α in modulating the observed changes. MPS VI rats had discs with large vacuolated cells and sizable nuclear defects. MP...

Cutaneous Manifestations of Internal Diseases
One of the best-recognized cutaneous manifestations of internal disease includes the skin changes seen in endocrine diseases. Cutaneous manifestations of internal disease can also be seen with certain neoplastic processes. Metabolic disturbances in zinc, lipid metabolism, or increased amino acid catabolism can result in zinc-responsive dermatosis, cutaneous xanthomas, and superficial necrolytic dermatitis, respectively. Certain infectious diseases can result in skin lesions that may provide visual clues but also critical diagnostic information if the skin is biopsied and cultured. Recognizing those skin changes that are cl...

Ischemic Dermatopathies
The ischemic dermatopathies are a group of vasculopathic diseases that share clinical and histologic features but result from variable causes. Generalized ischemic dermatopathies are typically characterized by atrophic lesions with erythema, scale/crust, erosions/ulcerations, and pigmentary changes. Lesions may affect the toes, tail tip, pinnal margins, bony prominences, or any combination of these areas. Familial dermatomyositis (FDM) most commonly occurs in juvenile collies and Shetland sheepdogs. Ischemic reactions to rabies vaccines may mimic FDM and can occur in any breed. The most reliable symptomatic therapy for any...

Immune dysfunction in Tourette syndrome.
Abstract
The association between immunity and neurodevelopmental disorders has been extensively investigated in autism, suggesting a potential involvement of both cellular and humoral immunity in the establishment of synaptic connectivity modulation during development. A similar link has been proposed also for Tourette syndrome (TS), a complex, multifactorial disorder, in which the interplay between genetic, environmental, hormonal and immunological factors might be relevant. Lymphocyte subpopulation analysis in TS suggests a possible systemic activation of several T- and B-cell subtypes, whereas the observed decre...

Vitamin D status in North Greenland is influenced by diet and season: indicators of dermal 25-hydroxy vitamin D production north of the Arctic Circle.
Abstract
Vitamin D status, as measured by serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D (s-25OHD), is important to human health. Dermal 25OHD production depends on UVB light that is influenced by latitude. We aimed to identify factors important to the production of s-25OHD in Arctic people and investigated subjects living in the town of Ilulissat and the settlement of Saqqaq in North Greenland (70°N) during the four seasons. Participants were enrolled with a balanced representation of non-Inuit and Inuit in Ilulissat and Inuit in Saqqaq, men and women, aged 30-39 and 40-49 years. Supplement use, hours spent outdoors and other lifest...

Galectin‐7 and actin are components of amyloid deposit of localized cutaneous amyloidosis
Abstract
The precursor protein of localized cutaneous amyloidosis (LCA) is believed to be cytokeratins on the basis of previous immunohistochemical studies. To identify the candidate amyloid protein biochemically, amyloid proteins were extracted with distilled water from lesional skin of LCA associated with Bowen's disease. The proteins were resolved on one‐ or two‐dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis followed by characterization with immunoblot analysis. The proteins with multiple molecular weights of 50‐67 kDa and two proteins with 25 and 35 kDa were identified as keratins, serum amyloid P component and a...

Dermal Equivalents in Oncology: Benefit of One‐Stage Procedure
ConclusionThe learning curve, the two‐stage graft required with DE2, and not using a vacuum‐assisted closure system can explain the high infection rate. The use of dermal equivalents is particularly indicated in the treatment of skin defect in oncology. The possibility of a one‐stage graft with DE1 and combination with negative pressure therapy is beneficial.

Meta‐analysis of digital dermoscopy follow‐up of melanocytic skin lesions: a study on behalf of the International Dermoscopy Society
Abstract
It has been demonstrated that dermoscopic monitoring of melanocytic lesions allows for the recognition of melanoma in early stages while minimizing the excision of benign lesions. However, it is still pending to determine the real impact of digital follow‐up in the clinical management of pigmented lesions. To assess the evidence of follow‐up of melanocytic skin lesions with digital dermoscopy in the management of individuals at risk for melanoma by performing a meta‐analysis. Medline database was screened, no limits in terms of date or language were applied. Original studies were selected when the following ...

Causes and risk factors for anaphylaxis
Summary
Anaphylaxis is in most cases an IgE‐dependent immunologic reaction. Mast cells are activated and release several mediators. Recent data about possible triggers of anaphylaxis indicate a clear age‐dependency. The most frequent triggers of anaphylaxis in children are foods; in adults venom and drugs predominate. In 2006 an anaphylaxis registry was established in German‐speaking countries. In the registry the triggers, circumstances, and treatment measures are collected from patients with anaphylaxis. However, the registry cannot supply epidemiological data like prevalence or incidence rates since the registrati...

Spray-Applied Cell Therapy With Human Allogeneic Fibroblasts and Keratinocytes for the Treatment of Chronic Venous Leg ulcers: A Phase 2, Multicentre, Double-Blind, Randomised, Placebo-Controlled Trial
Conclusion: Venous ulcers can be healed with a spray formulation of allogeneic neonatal keratinocytes and fibroblasts without the need for tissue engineering. Summary: Venous insufficiency results from venous valve dysfunction or venous obstruction, or both, of the superficial or deep veins. Subsequent venous hypertension results in edema, tissue inflammation, and microcirculatory destruction. The end result can be a venous ulcer that can be notoriously difficult to heal, with many not responding to standard compression therapy. Surgery can result in reduced recurrence of venous ulceration, but no interventions on veins t...

An investigation into the effects of decomposition on the post-mortem location of trans-dermal artefacts
Abstract: A search area of a crime scene to recover trans-dermal artefacts (here, earrings) was conducted using 12 pig carcasses, of various sizes, with pierced ears; 6 were buried and 6 deposited on the surface in a wooded area. After 28 months, the remains were excavated and recovered, and the final location of the earrings recorded. The furthest recorded earring from its associated surface remains was 119cm. In the buried remains, on three occasions earrings were found located 6cm below the recorded base of the grave. Formal recommendations for the search area of a crime scene have been established as 120cm radius from ...

Viscosity of Materials for Laryngeal Injection: A Review of Current Knowledge and Clinical Implications
Conclusion: There appears to be a growing body of useful knowledge about viscosity of substances used for medial (vibratory margin) injection. However, decisions regarding viscosity of substances for lateral injection medialization appear to have been made without the benefit of evidence-based research. It is possible that the trend toward relatively low viscosity materials for lateral injection is based on ease of surgical use through a small needle, but that the low viscosity may adversely affect the control over the position of the injected substance. Research is needed comparing viscosity with predictability of surgica...

We recently reported on the influence of IL10 polymorphisms on regulatory T cells and TH1/TH2 and proinflammatory cytokine secretion in cord blood and further development of immune-mediated diseases, such as atopic dermatitis and wheeze, later in childhood at the age of 3 years. We thank Koponen et al for the interest in our study and are encouraged to read about their results on a further IL10 promoter polymorphism (rs1800896), emphasizing the critical role of IL10 polymorphisms on immune regulation early in life.

IL10 polymorphisms, rhinovirus-induced bronchiolitis, and childhood asthma
Recently in the Journal, Raedler et al published their interesting observations on the association between IL10 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and markers of TH1/TH2 balance determined in cord blood samples of 200 healthy neonates. There was a significant association between 5 of the 8 studied genetic variations in the IL10 gene and TH2-oriented immune responses. For clinicians, the most interesting finding was a significant association between the same SNPs and the presence of atopic dermatitis, wheezing, or both at the age of 3 years.

The use of dermatoscopy to monitor therapeutic response of Bowen disease: a dermatoscopic pathological study
Conclusions Our study demonstrates that the persistence of dermatoscopic vascular structures of BD appears to be associated with residual disease, and disappearance of vascular structures suggests that the disease has been cured. In addition, reappearance of previous dermatoscopic vascular structures indicates the recurrence of BD. Therefore, we suggest that dermatoscopy can be a useful, reliable and noninvasive tool in the therapeutic follow‐up of BD.
