Is thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) a novel neuroendocrine modulator of keratin expression in human skin?
CONCLUSIONS: Selected human hair and epithelial keratins are modulated in situ. This may be relevant to explain hair shaft growth-promoting effects of TRH. Our pilot study suggests that the neuroendocrine controls that regulate the expression of human keratins deserve more systematic exploration and that these may be harnessed therapeutically. Allergic contact dermatitis in children: which factors are relevant? (review of the literature)
Abstract Allergic Contact Dermatitis (ACD) in children is increasing. Sensitization to contact allergens can start in early infancy. The epidermal barrier is crucial for the development of sensitization and elicitation of ACD. Factors that may influence the onset of sensitization in children are atopic dermatitis, skin barrier defects and intense or repetitive contact with allergens. Topical treatment of ACD is associated with cutaneous sensitization, although the prevalence is not high. ACD because of haptens in shoes or shin guards should be considered in cases of persistent foot eruptions or sharply defined dermatitis o...

Skin Cell Targeting with Self‐Assembled Ligand Addressed Nanoemulsion Droplets
Synopsis Dermo‐pharmacy and cosmetic industries have utilized nanotechnologies for two decades. Initially proposed as vector systems for encapsulation of actives, they gained interest in increasing cutaneous bioavailability. Here, we assay the benefits of self‐assembled nanoemulsions bearing ligands for targeting specific skin cells. Nanoemulsions, small droplets ranging typically from 20 nm to 150 nm, possess key properties for further use in cosmetics: long term stability, optical transparency, extended range of textures, and versatility. We investigated this nanoemulsion system and show ability to encapsulate a rang...

Intravascular metastatic melanoma: A difficult diagnosis
We report an unusual case of a patient with metastatic melanoma in whom 18F‐fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography‐computed tomography (FDG PET‐CT) demonstrated an intravascular melanoma metastasis in the superior vena cava (SVC), successfully treated with external beam radiotherapy. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case where FDG PET‐CT was used to make this diagnosis.

Non‐invasive in vivo detection and quantification of Demodex mites by confocal laser scanning microscopy Reply from authors
we thank Lacey et al. for their interesting and very welcome thoughts concerning our article on the usefulness of confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) in the quantification of demodex mites and for their excellent pictures of Demodex mites seen under the light microscope after extraction using the standardized skin surface biopsy (SSSB) method. As a center specialized in acne and rosacea we are also using SSSB routinely as the standard method for demodex quantification and have gathered ample experience within the past decades. We agree that mainly Demodex folliculorum is detected with both SSSB and especially with CL...

Inhibition of neuropeptide degradation suppresses sweating but increases the area of the axon reflex flare
Abstract The neuropeptides CGRP (Calcitonin Gene Related Peptide) and Substance P (SP) mediate neurogenic inflammation. Both are degraded by the neutral endopeptidase (NEP) which can be blocked by phosphoramidon. The aim was to evaluate the effect of NEP inhibition on sweating and vasodilatation. Dermal microdialysis was performed on the skin of 39 subjects. Two fibers were perfused with phosphoramidon (0.01%, 0.02% or 0.2%), two with saline. Acetylcholine (ACh) was either added to the microdialysis perfusate (n = 30, 10‐2 M) or thermoregulatory sweating was induced (n=9). Co‐application of phosphoramidon reduced choli...

[Cutaneous revelation of Rosai-Dorfman disease: 7 cases].
Abstract BACKGROUND: Rosai-Dorfman disease (RDD) is a benign form of non-Langerhans-cell histiocytosis. It is identified by a particular histological profile first observed in febrile lymph nodes. Extranodal sites are frequent. The most common site is the skin, which can reveal the disease despite a difficult and delayed diagnosis. Seven cases of cutaneous revelation of RDD were studied retrospectively in order to delineate the clinical characteristics and facilitate diagnosis and treatment of this extremely rare disease. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Six cases of RDD from 1990 to 2011 were identified in the photograph...

[Changes in mortality in the Reims University Hospital Dermatology Department (1996-2009)].
CONCLUSION: This study shows an increase in the number of deaths in a French university hospital dermatology department over the 14-year period in question, ascribable mainly to an increase in the number of patients receiving end-of-life care for metastatic melanoma. Significant changes were noted in the management of these patients with an increase in palliative care procedures. PMID: 23395489 [PubMed - in process]

[Pseudolymphoma of the skin: Ambiguous terminology. A survey among dermatologists and pathologists].
This study demonstrates that, in France, the term pseudolymphoma is an ambiguous notion. We believe that cases in which it is impossible to differentiate pseudolymphoma from cutaneous lymphoma should be referred to as lymphoproliferations of undetermined significance, since more than 50% of physicians consider that the term pseudolymphoma designates a resolutely benign entity. [Stevens-Johnson syndrome concurrent with primary Epstein-Barr virus infection].
We report a case of Stevens-Johnson syndrome concurrent with EBV infection. CASE REPORT: A 17-year-old boy consulted for an eruption suggestive of Stevens-Johnson syndrome, which was supported by the histopathology results. The patient had taken no medication during the previous weeks. Laboratory examinations showed atypical activated T lymphocytes. Serological tests and PCR results confirmed the diagnosis of primary EBV infection. The outcome was spontaneously favorable with only symptomatic treatment being required. DISCUSSION: Stevens-Johnson syndrome is characterized by "target" lesions and profuse mucous membr...

[Pemphigus vulgaris: An unusual clinical presentation].
DISCUSSION: During the course of pemphigus, the nail findings most commonly reported in the literature are paronychia, onychomadesis and onycholysis. However, these signs are generally seen in patients with known pemphigus vulgaris and only rarely indicate bullous disease. The case we report illustrates a special situation in which pemphigus vulgaris was revealed by unusual skin and nail lesions. PMID: 23395493 [PubMed - in process]
