Prosthetic Conformer as a Pressure Device in the Prophylactic Management of Postsurgical Auricular Keloid Formation: A Clinical Report
Abstract Keloids form as a result of aberrations of physiologic wound healing and may arise following any insult to the deep dermis. By causing pain, pruritus, and contractures, keloids significantly affect the patient's quality of life, both physically and psychologically. Multiple studies have been conducted for decades and have led to a plethora of therapeutic strategies to prevent or attenuate keloid formation, of which no single treatment has proven to be widely effective. Also, there is a dearth of information in the prosthodontic literature regarding appropriate management of such cases, especially when located in c...

Immunization of Rabbits with Nematode Ascaris lumbricoides Antigens Induces Antibodies Cross-Reactive to House Dust Mite Dermatophagoides farinae Antigens.
Abstract There are controversial reports on the relationship between helminthic infection and allergic diseases. Although IgE cross-reactivity between nematode Ascaris antigens and house dust-mite allergens in allergic patients have been reported, whether Ascaris or the mite is the primary sensitizer remains unknown. Here we found that immunization of naïve animals with Ascaris lumbricoides (Al) antigens induced production of antibodies cross-reactive to mite antigens from Dermatophagoides farinae (Df). Sera from Bangladeshi children showed IgE reactivity to Ascaris and mite extracts. IgG from rabbits immunized wi...

Outcome of a second patch test reading of TRUE Tests® on D6/7
Conclusion. A total of 4.4% of positive TRUE Test® reactions would be missed, and 9.1% might be missed, if only one reading was performed on D3/4. The results emphasize that many doubtful reactions at D3/4 may develop into positive reactions at a later reading. This may have important implications for evaluation of the clinical relevance of the test result.

Contact allergy from disperse dyes in textiles–a review
Several disperse dyes (DDs) are still considered to be the most important allergens in textile dermatitis, but there are sparse data about their current use in textiles. The aim of this review was to evaluate published studies and reports on contact allergy to DDs published in PubMed during the last 22 years (1990–2012). Prevalence data are provided by study and by dye, as well as by the described clinical peculiarities of DD dermatitis. We reviewed 54 studies. In total, 26 DDs were tested. The average prevalence in screening studies was >1% for Disperse Blue 106, Disperse Blue 124, and Disperse Orange 3. There is a l...

Regeneration and control of human fibroblast cell density by intermittently delivered pulsed electric fields
Abstract Proliferative scarring is a human disease with neither available effective treatment nor relevant animal model. One of the hypotheses for scar formation involves deregulation of fibroblast signaling and delayed apoptosis. Here we introduce a new chemical‐free method for fibroblast density control in culture by intermittently delivered pulsed electric fields (IDPEF), which cause irreversible damage to cell membranes. Using 5‐100 pulses with electric field strength of 150 V mm−1, pulse duration 70 µs, and frequency of 1Hz, we investigated the effects of pulsed electric field application on growth, death, and ...

Feather regeneration as a model for organogenesis
In the process of organogenesis, different cell types form organized tissues and tissues are integrated into an organ. Most organs form in the developmental stage, but new organs can also form in physiological states or following injuries during adulthood. Feathers are a good model to study post‐natal organogenesis because they regenerate episodically under physiological conditions and in response to injuries such as plucking. Epidermal stem cells in the collar can respond to activation signals. Dermal papilla located at the follicle base controls the regenerative process. Adhesion molecules (e.g., neural cell adhesion m...

Cheilitis glandularis: immunohistochemical expression of protein water channels (aquaporins) in minor labial salivary glands
Conclusion  Our findings suggest that the expression and arguably, function of some of the AQPs may be altered in CG; consequently, water flow mechanism abnormalities with possible alteration in salivary composition seem to occur. External factors (mainly UV rays) seem to play an important role in CG; nonetheless, our findings suggest that there might be some degree of alteration on water transportation.

One Goal, Different Strategies ‐ Molecular and Cellular Approaches for the Treatment of Inherited Skin Fragility Disorders
Abstract Epidermolysis bullosa (EB) is a heterogeneous group of inherited diseases characterized by the formation of blisters in the skin and mucosa. There is no cure or effective treatment for this potentially severe and fatal disease. Over the past few years, several reports have proposed different molecular strategies as new therapeutic options for the management of EB. From classical vector‐based gene therapy to cell‐based strategies such as systemic application of bone marrow stem cells or local application of fibroblasts, a broad range of molecular approaches have been explored. This array also includes novel met...

Photo protective effect of libanoridin isolated from Corydalis heterocarpa on UVB stressed human keratinocyte (HaCaT) cells
In this study we have investigated the effect of libanoridin isolated from Corydalis heterocarpa against UVB induced damage in human keratinocyte (HaCaT) cells and the molecular mechanism underlying those effects. Treatment with libanoridin inhibited the cell cytotoxicity and LDH induced by UVB exposure at 40 mJ/cm2. Additionally, expression levels of type IV collaganases (MMP‐2, MMP‐9) were decreased by libanoridin. Furthermore, MMP tissue inhibitors were enhanced followed by treatment with libanoridin. Moreover, UVB‐induced activation of phosphorylation of three MAPKs such as JNK, ERK, p38 and AP‐1 transcription ...

Repigmentation of Poliosis After Epithelial Grafting for Vitiligo
ConclusionRe‐coloring of poliosis with vitiligo is possible but was unexpected because of the difference in mechanism and signaling required between hair bulb melanization and the surface skin. One likely mechanism to explain this change is that melanocyte stem cells are stimulated and migrate to supply hair bulbs with new mature melanocytes. Epithelial grafting of vitiligo with poliosis in hairy areas should be a treatment of choice when white hair tufts cause cosmetic disfigurement.

Estimating the Number of Lifetime Follicular Units: A Survey and Comments of Experienced Hair Transplant Surgeons
ConclusionThere are a finite number of FUs containing permanent hairs in any patient. The results of this survey provide a guideline that should be helpful in avoiding inappropriately aggressive goals such as creating overly dense or overly anterior frontal and temporal hairlines without regard for a cautious evaluation of the limitations of likely long‐term donor/recipient area ratios. We present useful guideline numbers that can help physicians choose appropriate surgical goals.
