Laptop Computer-Induced Erythema ab Igne
Erythema ab igne is a skin reaction caused by exposure to heat. It is also known as hot water bottle rash, fire stains, and toasted skin syndrome. Ignis is the latin word for "fire".
In this case report a 12-year-old boy presented with erythema ab igne on his left thigh caused by the use of a laptop computer. This is the youngest of the 10 reported patients with this laptop-induced dermatosis since its first description in 2004.
Erythema ab igne is a reticular, pigmented, sometimes telangiectatic dermatosis that is caused by prolonged exposure to a heat or infrared source (see pictures from different cases at DermNe...

Chronic Health Conditions: How I Learned to Control My Hailey-Hailey Symptoms
A mild Hailey-Hailey breakout on the back
Last week I kicked off our new series about living with a chronic health condition by giving you all the gory details about a genetic skin disease called Hailey-Hailey. I’m following up with that today, so that next week we can focus on a different (yet equally challenging) health condition.
Skin disease are tough, for the obvious reason that it’s very difficult (yet often essential) to hide them on a daily basis from strangers, friends, family, neighbors, co-workers, and the world at large. So much so that trying to conceal a nasty, bloody, scabby, and pus-filled disea...

handyscope Turns iPhone Into Professional Dermatoscope
The handyscope is an optical attachment and an accompanying app that converts an iPhone into a practical dermatoscope. The attachment provides up to 20x magnification for the phone's camera and illuminates the skin with polarized light thanks to built-in LEDs and internal batteries. The iPhone app is used to store and examine encrypted images, as well as for sharing with other dermatologists for second opinions.
From the product page:
Just attach the handyscope to your iPhone, switch on the light, open the App and you are ready to start skin cancer screening. The lens is directly put on the patients’ skin, illumina...

Embarrassed patients and lack of time limit skin cancer screenings, say doctors
At your next physical exam, loosen up and ask for a little more face time. Use that time to ask your doctor about your skin-cancer risk and get a full-body screening. According to a survey of 1,669 U.S. physicians published this week in the Archives of Dermatology, more than two-thirds of doctors say they routinely screen patients for skin cancer during a physical exam, but often face major barriers—patient embarrassment and rushed visits—when doing so.
More family practitioners (54.4 percent) and internists (54.5 percent) reported time constraints as a barrier to performing a full-body exam than did dermatologists (3...

Scratching the surface of quantitative dermatopathology
Where is the digital pathology interest in dermatopathology buried?
With the increased adoption of both brightfield and whole slide fluorescence scanning, the accessibility of skin samples seems ripe for digital pathology applications. But there are good reasons for going slow in this clinic area:
1) Questions of dermatology diagnostic equivalency of glass versus image. While the whole slide imaging technology keeps improving, Jonhan Ho et al (University of Pittsburg, 2008) rightly mentions concerns with the whole slide image in clinical dermatology usage. A recent publication by Bjarne Nielsen et al (Aarhus University...

Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Laser Scar Removal But Were Afraid To Ask
Susan’s scar situation…I have a scar on my thigh. I fell while rollerblading 6 years ago. I tried using bleach creams to make the scar less visible but it doesn’t work. It looks like I have 5 dark scratches. My question is if a laser will help remove the scar? Please let me know if you can because I’m thinking about having this done in January by a dermatologist. I think my skin should not be tan right?

Melanoma and Hypochondria: Not Good for Your Health
Healing drill spot (center) and recurring bruise (bottom of nail)
You may recall that back in mid-October I had a little health scare concerning my left big toe. That is, there was a slight possibility that a bruise at the base of my toenail that had been hanging around for months was actually a melanoma. (If you have no idea what I’m talking about, you can read the follow-up post to my toe drama.) Luckily for me, it turned out not to be an acral lentiginous melanoma (like the one that killed Bob Marley), but merely a pocket of blood that had pooled inside a small indentation. I found this out after my nice podiatris...

During the winter months, certain health issues may arise that women should have on their radar. From mental health issues like stress, depression and seasonal affective disorder (SAD), to physical concerns like skin care, the winter can certainly pack an extra punch.
Depression peaks during the holiday season, affecting more than 17 million Americans, according to the National Mental Health Association. On average, women are more vulnerable to stress-related illnesses like depression and anxiety than men. One study, conducted by Pacific Heal...

Astellas Sues French Medical Journal Over Article
Here is an interesting development: Astellas Pharma has filed a lawsuit against Prescrire, a medical journal that is published by a non-profit organization, for publishing articles the drugmaker maintains has tarnished the reputation of its Protopic ointment used to treat eczema.
An article run last year questioned the preventive use of the ointment and maintained the risk-benefit balance was negative. An Astellas spokeswoman writes us to say that the drugmaker believes the article is “misleading.” The magazine counters that “freedom of expression and exercise of freedom of criticism are at stake,” ...

Baldness Due To Progenitor Cell Deficiency
Not enough stem cells convert into progenitor cells in hair follicles and baldness results. PHILADELPHIA Given the amount of angst over male pattern balding, surprisingly little is known about its cause at the cellular level. In a new study, published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation, a team led by George Cotsarelis, MD, chair of the Department of Dermatology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, has found that stem cells play an unexpected role in explaining what happens in bald scalp. The stem cells available for conversion into progenitor cells appear numerous enough. They just need a signal t...

The Right Brain raises her from the pit of despair:
It’s not surprising that so many people have this problem – there are at least FIVE different reasons your pits could be darker than they should be.
Cause #1: Shaving.
When you shave you cut the hairs off at, or just below, the surface of the skin. If your hairs are slightly darker than your skin color, they can give the appearance that your skin has a dark stain when it`s really just sub-surface hair.

3 Beauty Secrets for Dry Skin
Dry skin happens when your skin isn’t able to properly retain moisture and the production of sebum is low. Unfortunately, dealing with this problem is downright annoying, and the products you use can dry your skin out even more. But just like other skin problems, the products you use on a daily basis can heal your dry skin. Keeping that in mind, here are some beauty secrets for how you can effectively use skin care products to add moisture.
Tip #1 – Shower Etiquette

That’s the implication of a study published today in the Archives of Dermatology. It surveyed 2,869 adults about ways to prevent skin cancer, and found that less than 15 percent of women and 5 percent of men identified avoiding suntan parlors as one effective strategy. Yet, as we’ve recently reported, indoor tanning beds can quadruple your risk of developing melanoma, the most dangerous form of skin cancer. And the younger you are when you start using tanning beds, the higher your risk.
The most commonly suggested protective method by both women and men was wearing sunscreen, followed by avoiding the sun and wearing a...

Honey has for centuries been the workhorse of natural beauty and health. Ancient Egyptians used it for face and body and even for health, including cataracts, cuts, and burns. The Greeks, most notably Hippocrates, used honey for skin disorders and ulcers.

The Science of Keeping Skin Young and Wrinkle Free
Skin creases are not an inevitable component of the aging process, if you look to the most current studies. Sun injury, a main cause of wrinkling, can be healed naturally. Right here’s how the complete process works.
When UV rays from the sun hit your skin, the free radical molecules commonly existing in and close to the tissues become frenzied. The activity of the chemicals can damage cellular structures and also the skin’s DNA strands.
When we are young, de-oxidizing chemicals like SOD, coenzyme Q10 and glutathione are able to neutralize the free radicals earlier than they can do any injury. As we get older, ...
