Metals in female scalp hair globally and its impact on perceived hair health
Globally, billions of individuals wash their hair in water, which acts as an exogenous metal source. Many studies which measure the metal levels found on human hair specifically aim to remove exogenous materials prior to analysis. While this is needed when using hair analysis to probe the impact of the local environment on endogenous metal levels, it's not relevant for understanding exactly what is on hair as a result of contact with its daily environment. Understanding these levels are important, as the presence of redox active metals, such as copper and iron, can impact fibre health, either due to UV irradiation, or duri...

CXCL10 produced from hair follicles induces Th1 and Tc1 cell infiltration in the acute phase of alopecia areata followed by sustained Tc1 accumulation in the chronic phase
Conclusions: These results suggest that the increased production of CXCL10 from hair follicles induces preferential infiltrates of highly chemoattracted Th1 and Tc1 cells in the acute phase of AA, and Tc1 infiltration remains prolonged in the chronic phase.

[Influence of ecological groups on the in vitro antifungal susceptibility of dermatophytic fungi.]
CONCLUSIONS: : Azole derivatives showed a similar antifungal profile, being more active against anthropophilic > zoophilic > geophilic. Activity of TRB and AMR was different from azole derivatives (zoophilic > anthropophilic > geophilic). A higher in vitro antifungal activity against the three ecological groups was observed with TRB and AMR, whilst BFZ was the less active drug.

Distribution of polyethylene glycol coated quantum dots in mice skin
Abstract
The distribution of nanoparticles (NP) in an organism is an important issue for developing NP–based drug delivery systems and for general nanotoxicology. The knowledge of NP localisation in the skin is crucial for the optimisation of NP behaviour in vivo. Therefore, we have used semiconductor quantum dots (QD) to investigate their biodistribution in the skin by means of confocal fluorescence microscopy after subcutaneous injection. The results obtained showed that the diffusion of QD in the dermis is limited by basement membrane and dense connective tissue fibres which resulted in negligible QD penetration into ...

Photodynamic inhibition of Trichophyton rubrum: in vitro activity and the role of oxidative and nitrosative bursts in fungal death
Conclusions
Photodynamic inhibition was more efficient in promoting cell death than the antifungal cyclopiroxolamine against T. rubrum. ROS, ONOO· and NO· were important in the fungicidal activity of aPI. A suggested mechanism for this activity is that TBO is excited by LED light (630 nm), reacts with biomolecules and increases the availability of transition electrons and substrates for nitric oxide synthase, thereby increasing the oxidative and nitrosative bursts in the fungal cell.

Temperament and character properties of primary focal hyperhidrosis patients
Conclusion:
Temperament and character features of PFH patients were different from healthy group and it was considered that these features were affected by many factors including genetic, biological, environmental, and socio-cultural elements. During the follow-up of PFH cases, psychiatric evaluation is important and psychotherapeutic interventions can increase the chances of success of the dermatological treatments and can have a positive impact on the quality of life and social cohesion of chronic cases.

Complex Composite Oncologic Chest Wall Defects Reconstructed With Synthetic or Bioprosthetic Mesh Experience Similar Surgical Outcomes When Combined With Soft Tissue Flap Coverage
The traditional approach for reconstruction of thoracic defects following tumor extirpation has been to employ a synthetic prosthesis (i.e. polypropylene and/or methylmethacrylate). Bioprosthetic mesh (i.e. porcine, bovine, or human acellular dermal matrix) has demonstrated advantages over synthetic mesh in abdominal wall reconstruction. The indications, advantages and disadvantages of bioprosthetic vs. synthetic mesh for thoracic reconstruction are not well understood. We hypothesize that patients' outcomes will be superior with bioprosthetic chest wall reconstruction in comparison to synthetic mesh chest wall reconstruction.

Transduction Efficiency of Pseudotyped Adeno-Associated Viral Vectors for Gene Transfer in Dermal Fibroblasts to Modulate Wound Healing
Sustained transgene expression and cell specific gene transfer are goals of cutaneous gene therapy. We and others have demonstrated that using a pseudotyping strategy with AAV vectors has the potential to confer a unique cellular tropism and transduction efficiency profile. We hypothesize that pseudotyped AAV vectors may have differential tropism and transduction efficiency under normal and wound conditions.

The Role of Prolyl Hydroxylase Domain-2 and Hif-1alpha in Wound Healing
Hypoxia inducible factor (HIF) -1alpha, part of the heterodimeric transcription factor that mediates cellular response to hypoxia, is critical for the expression of multiple angiogenic growth factors, cell motility, and the recruitment of endothelial progenitor cells. Inhibition of the oxygen-dependent negative regulator of HIF-1alpha, prolyl hydroxylase domain-2 (PHD-2), leads to HIF-1alpha stabilization and mimics various cellular and physiological responses to hypoxia. The roles of PHD-2 in the epidermal and dermal compartments have not been clearly defined in relation to wound healing.

Atopic Dermatitis: Update and Proposed Management Algorithm.
Abstract
Atopic dermatitis is a chronic inflammatory disease that affects 20% of children and almost 3% of adults and is associated with considerable impairment of quality of life for both patients and their families. While the condition resolves spontaneously after puberty in over 75% of cases, it can persist into adulthood. Furthermore, in young children severe forms can have serious health consequences and affect social development. There are no appropriate guidelines on how to handle cases that do not respond to routine treatment. In this article, we review the current treatments for moderate to severe atopic d...

Nasal Tip Cutaneous Metastases Secondary to Lung Carcinoma: Three Case Reports and a Review of the Literature.
We report here 3 cases of cutaneous metastatic carcinoma of the nose that originated from lung cancer. Two men, age 61 and 76 years, with lung cancers were referred for evaluation of a tumour on the tip of the nose. The third patient, a 57-year-old man, had developed a rosacea-like tumour on the tip of the nose; although he had no history of internal cancer, whole-body positron-emission tomography-computed tomography revealed a primary lung cancer. Skin biopsies of all 3 cases showed metastatic squamous cell carcinoma, and all primary lung cancers were squamous cell carcinomas. Only 3 patients are described here, and furth...

Gene Expression Analysis of the Corticotrophin-releasing Hormone-proopiomelanocortin System in Psoriasis Skin Biopsies.
Abstract
The corticotrophin-releasing hormone-proopiomelano-cortin (CRH-POMC) system in the skin coordinates pigmentation and the immune response. The aim of this study was to evaluate the regulatory role of the neuroendocrine system in the pathogenesis of psoriasis. Using quantitative real-time-PCR, mRNA expression levels of 15 genes related to the CRH-POMC system were measured in punch biopsies from lesional and non-lesional skin of patients with psoriasis and from skin of healthy control subjects. Statistically significant up-regulation of POMC, CRH receptor type 1, melanin-concentrating hormone receptor (MCHR1)...

Risk Factors for Non-melanoma Skin Cancer in Kidney Transplant Patients in a Spanish Population in the Mediterranean Region.
Abstract
Non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) is the most frequent malignancy in organ transplant recipients. The aetiology of NMSC after transplant is multifactorial. The aim of this study was to determine the clinical and environmen-tal factors involved in the development of NMSC in a Spanish kidney transplant population from the Mediterranean region. A total of 289 patients who had received a kidney transplant during the period January 1996 to December 2010 were included in the study. Both prospective and retrospective data were used. All patients underwent a structured interview and a complete examination of the ski...

'Addressing' an under-recognised cause of discomfort for patients undergoing Mohs micrographic surgery.
Abstract
Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) is acknowledged as the gold-standard treatment for high risk non-melanoma skin cancer of the head and neck. By virtue of its tissue-sparing nature, patients who undergo MMS may require several stages or 'layers' to successfully extirpate a tumour. Under such circumstances it is commonplace for adhesive dressings to be applied between each stage to cover an exposed wound bed and act as a temporary pressure dressing to reduce the risk of bleeding.

Double blind randomized pilot trial evaluating the efficacy of oral propranolol on infantile hemangiomas in infants less than 4 months of age.
Abstract
Since our report of the ability of propranolol to shrink alarming infantile hemangiomas (IHs) (1,2), propranolol has become the first line therapy for life threatening IHs (3-5). Recently, a randomized clinical trial versus placebo has confirmed the safety and efficacy of 2mg/kg daily oral propranolol in children aged between 9 weeks and 5 years in focal and segmental IH (6). However, the latter study have focused on severe forms of IH, with sometimes a late onset of treatment in a heterogeneous population In the present monocentric pilot randomized, double-blind, placebo controlled clinical trial, we test...

Ichthyosis vulgaris - the filaggrin mutation disease.
Abstract
Ichthyosis vulgaris is caused by loss-of-function mutations in the filaggrin gene (FLG) and characterized clinically by xerosis, scaling, keratosis pilaris, palmar and plantar hyperlinearity, and a strong association with atopic disorders. According to published studies presented in this review article, FLG mutations are observed in approximately 7.7% of Europeans and 3.0% of Asians, but appear to be infrequent in darker-skinned populations. This clinical review article provides an overview of ichthyosis vulgaris, epidemiology, related disorders and pathomechanisms. Not only does ichthyosis vulgaris posses...

Humoral and cell-mediated autoimmunity in lichen sclerosus.
Abstract
We read with great interest the paper of Edmonds et al. (1) who observed that men with penile lichen sclerosus (PLS) have significantly increased extracellular matrix protein 1 (ECM1) serum levels when compared to healthy controls (HC). Similar results were previously found in women with vulvar LS (VLS).(2) Edmonds et al. 1 postulated that anti-ECM1 antibodies are not the causative mechanism but present an epiphenomenon in LS. Nevertheless, there is evidence for humoral as well as cell-mediated autoimmunopathogenic mechanisms driving LS.(1-5).

Digital compression of facial arteries facilitates cutaneous nasal surgery.
Abstract
Non-melanoma skin cancers on the nose frequently present to dermatology for surgical excision. This anatomical area has an excellent vascular supply and, consequently, increased intra-operative bleeding (Fig. 1 (a)). Pinching the nasal tip to control bleeding is commonly used, however this can be uncomfortable for the patient because the nasal septum may not be anaesthetised (Fig. 1 (b)).

Double blind randomized pilot trial evaluating the efficacy of oral propranolol on infantile hemangiomas in infants less than 4 months of age
Since our report of the ability of propranolol to shrink alarming infantile hemangiomas (IHs) (1,2), propranolol has become the first line therapy for life threatening IHs (3‐5). Recently, a randomized clinical trial versus placebo has confirmed the safety and efficacy of 2mg/kg daily oral propranolol in children aged between 9 weeks and 5 years in focal and segmental IH (6). However, the latter study have focused on severe forms of IH, with sometimes a late onset of treatment in a heterogeneous population In the present monocentric pilot randomized, double‐blind, placebo controlled clinical trial, we tested the abilit...

Humoral and cell‐mediated autoimmunity in lichen sclerosus
We read with great interest the paper of Edmonds et al. 1 who observed that men with penile lichen sclerosus (PLS) have significantly increased extracellular matrix protein 1 (ECM1) serum levels when compared to healthy controls (HC). Similar results were previously found in women with vulvar LS (VLS).2 Edmonds et al. 1 postulated that anti‐ECM1 antibodies are not the causative mechanism but present an epiphenomenon in LS. Nevertheless, there is evidence for humoral as well as cell‐mediated autoimmunopathogenic mechanisms driving LS.1‐5

Ichthyosis vulgaris ‐ the filaggrin mutation disease
Abstract
Ichthyosis vulgaris is caused by loss‐of‐function mutations in the filaggrin gene (FLG) and characterized clinically by xerosis, scaling, keratosis pilaris, palmar and plantar hyperlinearity, and a strong association with atopic disorders. According to published studies presented in this review article, FLG mutations are observed in approximately 7.7% of Europeans and 3.0% of Asians, but appear to be infrequent in darker‐skinned populations. This clinical review article provides an overview of ichthyosis vulgaris, epidemiology, related disorders and pathomechanisms. Not only does ichthyosis vulgaris possess ...
