Risk Of Keloid Scarring Of The Head, Neck 7 Times Greater In African-Americans
African Americans are seven times more likely than Caucasians to develop an excessive growth of thick, irregularly shaped and raised scarring on their skin - known as a keloid - following head and neck surgery, according to a new study from Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. This finding, however, is much lower than that previously reported in medical literature, where rates of keloid development have been shown to be up to 16 percent in African Americans. Unlike regular scars, keloids do not subside over time and often extend outside the wound site...

Scientists uncover mechanism behind melanoma drug resistance
In this study, we found that in some patients, the cancer simply makes more of the target, the mutated BRAF gene, so that the drug dose becomes too weak to fight the cancer.   "If you think of the mutation as a right hand and the BRAF inhibitor as a left hand and the two clasp to be effective, there's clearly an optimal ratio to ensure the mutated gene is fully inhibited. Here, we get more of the drug target, which has the same effect as dropping the drug level."   The one-year study is published March 6 in the peer-reviewed journal Nature Communications.   About 50 percent of patients with metastatic melano...

Shopping For Drugs
When Doug Hirsch turned 40, he made a list of things he wanted to do before he died. Sounds dramatic, but at Facebook where Hirsch once worked in product development, being 40 is apparently like pushing 100. So he booked a series of doctor appointments to make sure he had a clean bill of health. His dermatologist gave him a prescription, which he took to a Walgreens on Wilshire Blvd in Santa Monica, but politely walked out when he saw the $612 sticker. A few blocks away at Rite Aid, the pharmacist told him rudely not to waste his time asking for prices. Hirsch made one last attempt at CVS, where the pharmacist quoted him $...
