Prunella vulgaris extract and rosmarinic acid prevent UVB-induced DNA damage and oxidative stress in HaCaT keratinocytes

Abstract Solar radiation is a very important exogenous factor in skin pathogenesis and can lead to the development of a number of skin
disorders. UVB irradiation is known to induce oxidative stress, inflammation and especially DNA lesions in exposed cells.
It is important, therefore, to identify agents that can offer protection against UVB-caused skin damage. Natural compounds
have been studied for their possible ability to control/modulate various lifestyle-related diseases. The application of plant
compounds/extracts with screening, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities may also successfully protect...

Conclusions: The detection of IgA autoantibodies against epidermal transglut-aminase is the most sensitive serological test in the diagnosis of dermatitis herpetiformis. Our observations confirm that patients with dermatitis herpetiformis usually do not demonstrate apparent gastrointestinal symptoms.

Pre-diagnostic digital imaging prediction model to discriminate between malignant melanoma and benign pigmented skin lesion

Malignant cutaneous melanoma is the most deadly form of skin cancer with an increasing incidence over the past decades. The final diagnosis provided is typically based on a biopsy of the skin lesion under consideration. To assist the naked-eye examination and decision on whether or not a biopsy is necessary, digital image processing techniques provide promising results. The hypothesis of this study was that a computer-aided assessment tool could assist the evaluation of a pigmented skin lesion. Hence, the overall aim was to discriminate between malignant and benign pigmented skin lesions using digital image processing. Dis...

Few comparative data are available on age-related changes in skin color among different ethnic groups. The aim of the study was to measure and analyze the skin color and color heterogeneity in four different ethnic groups living in the same local environment and to determine the effects of age on these skin color characteristics. Female volunteers (385) from four ethnic populations (African-American, Caucasian, Chinese and Mexicans) living in the same city were enrolled after informed consent. Skin color was measured on two facial areas, forehead and cheek. The subjects were further divided into six age ranges: 19[ndash]30...

Lower extremity ulcer image segmentation of visual and near-infrared imagery

We propose an automatic ulcer segmentation system with a simple manual correction possibility. In addition to visual color information, we use near-infrared (NIR) images because NIR can penetrate deeper into tissue than visual light. The system is able to measure the surface area of a lower extremity ulcer segmented at its different stages and constructs corresponding healing curves over time. This knowledge is useful in monitoring lower extremity ulcers and helps clinicians select the most efficient therapy. Eighteen lower extremity ulcers and one ulcer on the back were examined from 17 patients. The patients were elderly...

According to the results of a prospective randomised trial and cost-effectiveness analysis of silver-donating versus non-silver low-adherence dressings in the treatment of venous leg ulcers there is no evidence to support the routine use of silver-donating dressings beneath compression for venous ulceration.
The VULCAN study was a UK multicentre study that randomised 213 patients to silver-donating dressings (n = 107) or non-antimicrobial, low-adherence dressings (n = 106). Dressings were changed at least weekly and were covered by multilayer compression bandaging. ...

We describe a family with AHO and hormone resistance (PHP type Ia) resulting from a rare mutation in GNAS1. The proband presented with small subcutaneous calcifications in the helix of the right ear and concentrated in a sharply demarcated zone of subcutaneous and dermal hypoplasia. This abnormality has so far not been described in patients with AHO. We speculate on the mechanism of dermal hypoplasia and resistance to PTH and suggest that subcutanous or dermal hypoplasia might be another feature which can be present in patients with AHO.

Conclusions The modified CDASI is perfectly correlated with the original CDASI. It has equally good concurrent validity with the PGM-overall skin and PGM-activity scales. The CDASI subscores have equally good concurrent validity with the PGM-activity and PGM-damage scales. We suggest that PGMs of skin disease activity and damage should be assessed separately for greater specificity. The modified CDASI is a refined and equally as useful outcome measure.
