Systems biology approaches to evaluate arsenic toxicity and carcinogenicity: An overview.
Abstract
Long term exposure to arsenic, either through groundwater, food stuff or occupational sources, results in a plethora of dermatological and non-dermatological health effects including multi-organ cancer and early mortality. Several epidemiological studies, across the globe have reported arsenic-induced health effects and cancerous outcomes; but the prevalence of such diseases varies depending on environmental factors (geographical location, exposure level), and genetic makeup (and variants thereof); which is further modulated by several other factors like ethnicity, age-sex, smoking status, diet, etc. It is...

Cutaneous lymphocyte associated antigen (CLA) as a novel predictive marker of TNF‐alpha inhibitor biological therapy in psoriasis
Abstract
A considerable number of psoriatic patients shows secondary resistance during long‐term TNF‐alpha inhibitor therapy, necessitating the identification of reliable predictive markers.
Predictive role of cutaneous lymphocyte associated antigen (CLA) was investigated. 38 severe psoriatic patients were treated for a 24‐week‐long study period. Clinical responsiveness (PASI) and changes of flow cytometry‐measured peripheral lymphocyte CLA expression (week 0‐2‐6) were statistically analysed.
Regarding 24‐week‐long treatment outcome patients were divided into two groups: During the first 6 weeks mean CLA ...

P2X7 receptor is required for neutrophil accumulation in a mouse model of irritant contact dermatitis
Abstract
Irritant contact dermatitis (ICD) is an inflammatory reaction caused by chemical toxicity on the skin. The P2X7 receptor (P2X7R) is a key mediator of cytokine release, which recruits immune cells to sites of inflammation. We investigated the role of P2X7R in croton oil (CrO)‐induced ICD using in vitro and in vivo approaches. ICD was induced in vivo by CrO application on the mouse ear and in vitro by incubation of murine macrophages and dendritic cells (DCs) with CrO and ATP. Infiltrating cells were identified by flow cytometry, histology and myeloperoxidase (MPO) determination. Effects of the ATP scavenger apyra...

A lentiviral vector‐based genetic sensor system for comparative analysis of permeability and activity of vitamin D3 analogues in xenotransplanted human skin
In this study, we wish to establish an in vivo model that allows the comparison of permeability and activity of vitamin D3 analogues in human skin. We generate a bipartite, genetic sensor technology that combines efficient lentivirus‐directed gene delivery to xenotransplanted human skin with vitamin D3‐induced expression of a luciferase reporter gene and live imaging of animals by bioluminescence imaging. Based on the induction of a transcriptional activator consisting of the vitamin D receptor fused to the Gal4 DNA‐binding domain, the vitamin D3‐responsive sensor facilitates noninvasive and rapid assessment of per...

Comparing the rates of absorption and weight loss during a desorption test using near infrared spectroscopy
Abstract
The importance of determining skin hydration has over the years prompt the development of many instruments and methods, specifically designed to assess this parameter or water contents especially in the stratum corneum, and have greatly matured to suit different anatomical sites and measure multiple attributes. Of those, Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) has gained wide interest as a precise, safe, fast and noninvasive technique for determining skin hydration due to its high sensitivity to hydrogen bonding and ability to measure the amount of water in skin directly using the intensities of overtone and combination...

Two Percent Of People Have Armpits That Never Smell
Two percent of people carry an unusual form of a specific gene (ABCC11) that means their armpits never smell. The finding came from new research involving 6,495 women who are enrolled in the Children of the 90s study at the University of Bristol, England, and was published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology. In the study, 117 (2%) of the subjects were lucky enough to carry this gene that allows them to never have to worry about using deodorant...

One million Brits can 'dump their deodorants'
Conclusion
This is intriguing research following up on the previous finding that a particular DNA sequence variation in the ABCC11 gene is associated with both earwax and armpit sweat odour. One form of the variant is linked with dry earwax and less odorous sweat, while another is linked with wet earwax and more odorous sweat.
The researchers did find that there was a link between which variant mothers had and their deodorant usage. However, almost 80% of women with the dry earwax, “non-odorous” variant still reported using deodorant around once a week. The researchers’ results indicate the same may be true for men,...

Top Of The List Of Reasons People Visit Doctors Are Skin Problems, Joint Disorders
A new Mayo Clinic Proceedings study shows that people most often visit their health care providers because of skin issues, joint disorders and back pain. Findings may help researchers focus efforts to determine better ways to prevent and treat these conditions in large groups of people. "Much research already has focused on chronic conditions, which account for the majority of health care utilization and costs in middle-aged and older adults," says Jennifer St. Sauver, Ph.D...

Use of bleach baths for the treatment of infected atopic eczema.
Abstract
Atopic eczema is one of the most common skin disorders in young children and also affects adults. Staphylococcus aureus infection is the most frequent complication of atopic eczema and is involved in the worsening of the disease. Antibiotic therapy against S. aureus has been an important component of treatment for atopic eczema but there are concerns about antibiotic overuse and increasing bacterial resistance. This has led some clinicians to recommend the use of homemade remedies such as bleach baths as an adjunctive treatment for patients with infected atopic eczema, despite the fact that there have be...

Proliferative nodules of undifferentiated spindle cells arising in a large congenital melanocytic naevus.
Abstract
Proliferative nodules (PN) are benign lesions that arise in large congenital melanocytic naevi (LCMN). Clinically and histologically they can be difficult to differentiate from malignancies, which are also associated with LCMN. The PN in this case consisted of undifferentiated spindle cells and exhibited unusual histological features including negative stains for melanocytic markers (S100, HMB45 and MelA), negative stain for c-Kit, high mitotic index and unusual morphology of the lesional cells. As a result, a firm histological classification could not be made, which posed a challenge for the clinical mana...

Clinical and microscopic evaluation of long‐term (6 months) epilation effects of the ipulse personal home‐use intense pulsed light (IPL) device
Conclusion A highly significant hair density reduction through induction of telogen followed by miniaturization similar to that achieved in professionally delivered permanent laser hair reduction appears to be the major mechanism of hair reduction using home‐use IPL. IPL‐induced damage to the isthmus and upper stem may inhibit or interfere with the hair regrowth process. Longer term studies are required to determine if this observed damage is clinically permanent.
