Recent advances in technology have drastically improved aesthetic treatment for skin. Of particular interest is the emergence of laser- and lightbased technologies, which have offered great promise among skin-rejuvenation therapies. New laser resurfacing techniques for skin rejuvenation offer significant advantages over conventional ablative lasers, such as the CO2 and erbiumYAG laser systems. Nonablative and fractional lasers, although not as efficacious as ablative therapies, are associated with significantly diminished complication rates and shortened recovery times. Novel devices combining ablative and fractional techn...

The history of classifying skin types is rather new and there has been considerable progress made with continuing awareness. The Fitzpatrick Skin Phototype Classification remains the gold standard. It is simple and user friendly, however this system fails to accurately predict skin reactions. The Roberts Skin Type Classification System is a tool to predict the skin response to injury and insult from cosmetic procedures and identify the propensity of sequelae from inflammatory skin disorders. It can be a predictor of an impending complication, such as hyperpigmentation and scarring, which can then be avoided. In addition, i...

In February 2007, an epidemic of severe dermatitis from Chinese recliner chairs and sofas started to unfold first in Finland and a few months later in the UK. Some patients reacted in patch tests (PTs) strongly to the material of their furniture, either leather or fabric. There have been hundreds of reports of chair or sofa dermatitis from Finland and the UK, with all cases linked to the same furniture factory in China. Clinical findings in both countries were very similar and unlike any known dermatosis. Many cases have been quite severe, resembling mycosis fungoides or septic infections, requiring hospitalization. We report a case of malignant melanoma (MM) derived from cerebriform intradermal naevus (CIN) in a 66-year-old Japanese man. The patient had cutis verticis gyrata (CVG) on the posterior area of the scalp at birth. He noticed a dome-shaped nodule at the centre of the CVG at 66 years of age. Histopathological examination found a nodule of MM arising within an extensive area of intradermal naevus. There was no metastasis to lymph nodes or other organs. To our knowledge, only two cases of CIN in which MM had later developed have been reported. We estimated that the incidence of melanoma from CIN including our case is 4.5% (3 o...

In this study, the early transcriptional response of human epidermal keratinocytes to EFs is examined using microarrays. Increased expression of various chemokines, interleukins, and other inflammatory response genes indicates that EFs stimulate keratinocyte activation and immune stimulatory activity. Gene expression activity further suggests that interleukin 1 is either released or activated in EFs. Expression of the chemokine CCL20 steadily increases at 100 mV/mm over time until around 8 h after exposure. This chemokine is also expressed at field strengths of 300 mV/mm—above the level of endogenous ...

Microdermabrasion is a popular method for facial rejuvenation and is performed worldwide. Despite its extensive usage, there are few publications on skin barrier change after microdermabrasion and none concerning diamond microdermabrasion. Our object was to see changes in transepidermal water loss (TEWL), hydration and erythema of the face following diamond microdermabrasion. Twenty-eight patients were included in this spilt face study. TEWL, stratum corneum hydration and the degree of erythema were measured from the right and left sides of the face (forehead and cheek) at baseline. One side of the face was treated with di...

The keratinocytes actively participate in the cutaneous immune responses. Dysregulation and abnormal expression of inflammatory mediators or their receptors in keratinocytes are relevant to the pathogenesis of chronic inflammatory skin diseases. The mechanism of long-lasting inflammatory processes is related with the activation of nuclear factor (NF)-[kappa]B and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), which play a crucial role in the immune responses. There are potential interaction points between these two pathways. The aim of this study is to investigate the differences in expression levels and distributions of phospho...

Pigmented neurofibroma (PNF) is a rare cutaneous tumor that has been observed in patients with or without neurofibromatosis (NF). This tumor is histologically characterized by the coexistence of scattered melanin-laden cells and benign spindle cells with neural differentiations. Hypertrichosis is the excessive growth of hair on non-androgen-dependent areas of the body. It has been reported that hypertrichosis may sometimes overlie a neurofibroma. We highlight a case of PNF with hypertrichosis on a 17-year-old woman with no associated NF. We also discuss the possible underlying pathogenic mechanism of a localized hypertrich...

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic relapsing eczematous skin disease characterized by pruritus and inflammation and accompanied by cutaneous physiological dysfunction (dry and barrier-disrupted skin). Most of the patients have atopic diathesis. A standard guideline for the management (diagnosis, severity classification and therapy) of AD has been established. In our guideline, the necessity of dermatological training is emphasized in order to assure diagnostic skill and to enable evaluation of the severity of AD. The definitive diagnosis of AD requires the presence of all three features: (i) pruritus; (ii) typical morphol...

This paper discusses an image-processing method applied to skin texture analysis. Considering that the characterisation of human skin texture is a task approached only recently by image processing, our goal is to lay out the benefits of this technique for quantitative evaluations of skin features and localisation of defects. We propose a method based on a statistical approach to image pattern recognition. The results of our statistical calculations on the grey-tone distributions of the images are proposed in specific diagrams, the coherence length diagrams. Using the coherence length diagrams, we were able to determine gra...

Advances in diapers and skin barrier products are often aimed at reducing water penetration of the skin to prevent diaper dermatitis and evaporimetry has commonly been measured to quantify excess water in the skin. We used MEDLINE (1980[ndash]2008) and hand searching to identify published papers that used evaporimetry to measure WVFD when the skin has been exposed to water/saline/urine. This observation suggests that coinheritance of mutations in KRT16 and FLG may aggravate the PC phenotype and that FLG could serve as a genetic modifier in PC.
