Conclusions Application of the CPX/sol nail lacquer allows rapid nail penetration of CPX, providing CPX levels sufficient to inhibit fungal growth for a prolonged period of time (30 h) after application of lacquer dose. CPX/sol nail lacquer appeared superior to the market reference Loceryl® in terms of both vehicle (hydroxypropyl chitosan) and active ingredient (CPX) as witnessed by its higher efficacy on all nail pathogens.

Clinical decisions on whether to follow up or remove small and medium congenital melanocytic nevi (SMCMN) in children have cost implications that have not been studied. To compare the costs of excision of SMCMN in children with lifelong follow-up in a tertiary center. We elaborated models for the evaluation of the costs of excision and long-term follow-up. We retrospectively collected data on 113 consecutive excised SMCMN (105 single-step interventions and 8 multiple-step interventions) from the medical records of our pediatric dermatology unit from 2001 to 2007 and calculated and compared the costs (direct and indirect) o...

We report our experiences using a multiwavelength laser, which has not been previously described. Thirty-nine VLs in 30 patients were treated. Treatment with 595-nm pulsed-dye laser was conducted at 20 ms and 10 J/cm2, followed by 1,064-nm neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet laser at 20 ms and 70 J/cm2. Complete resolution was observed in 38 lesions (95%). No complications after treatment were noted. One case developed a small scar. Multiwavelentgh laser (595 nm; 1,064 nm) provides a safe, fast, and effective option in the treatment of VLs. The authors have indicated no significant interest with commercial supporters.

Laser treatment of childhood hemangiomas remains controversial. Previous studies have used outdated technology, resulting in a potential overrepresentation of adverse outcomes. To evaluate outcomes of hemangiomas treated with the most current laser technology. A retrospective chart analysis of 90 patients with a median age of 3.0 months and a total of 105 hemangiomas were enrolled over a 2.5-year period. All were treated with the 595-nm long-pulse pulsed-dye laser (LP-PDL) with dynamic epidermal cooling at 2- to 8-week intervals depending on the stage of growth. Exclusion criteria were previous laser, surgical, or corticos...

Perineural invasion (PNI) has been associated with poor prognosis in cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (CSCC), but it is unclear how different degrees of nerve involvement affect prognosis. To determine whether the diameter of nerves invaded by CSCC affects outcomes of recurrence, metastasis, and disease-specific and overall survival. A retrospective cohort study was conducted of patients with CSCC with PNI. Dermatopathologists blinded to subject outcomes determined the diameter of the largest involved nerve. Data were obtainable for 48 patients. Small-caliber nerve invasion (SCNI) of nerves less than 0.1 mm in diameter wa...

Polysaccharide gel (PG) from durian's fruit hulls is obviously efficient for use in the preparations of food and pharmaceutical products. This research focused on biophysical assessment of PG durian's fruit hulls for cosmetic formulation. The efficacy of facial skin capacitance and firmness increment of PG formulation were evaluated. Its application showed significant effect on skin capacitance after 28 and...

Minimally ablative fractional laser devices have gained acceptance as a preferred method for skin resurfacing. Notable improvements in facial rhytides, photodamage, acne scarring, and skin laxity have been reported. The aim of the present work was to compare how different CO2 laser fluences, by modulating the secretory pathway of cytokines, are able to influence the wound-healing process, and how these fluences are associated with different clinical results. Eighteen patients, all with photodamaged skin, were treated using a fractional CO2 laser (SmartXide DOT, Deka M.E.L.A., Florence, Italy) with varying laser fluences (2...

Delayed pressure urticaria (DPU) is a physical urticaria characterized by the development of deep swellings at sites of pressure application on the skin. Etiopathogenesis of DPU is still unknown, although the available evidence suggests the involvement of mast cells through non-immunologic mechanisms and the role of several mediators beyond histamine, such as proinflammatory cytokines. The management of DPU is complex, also considering that prevention is very difficult and DPU frequently coexists with chronic "idiopathic" urticaria. Moreover, H1-antihistamines, which are the mainstay of treatment for common urticaria, usua...

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common problem of childhood causing considerable distress. Effective topical treatments exist, yet poor adherence often results in poor outcomes. A framework is needed to better understand adherence behaviour. To provide a basis for this framework, we reviewed established models used to describe health behaviour. Structural elements of these models informed the development of an adherence model for AD that can be used to complement empirical AD treatment trials. Health behaviour models provide a means to describe factors that affect adherence and that can mediate the effects of different adheren...

The setting-sun pattern was most commonly seen in combination with brown reticular structures. In four lesions, brown reticular structures surrounded a central white scar-like patch resembling that of a dermatofibroma. Further studies are required to clarify this.
