Pharmacokinetics of Melatonin in Preterm Infants
ConclusionsA two‐hour infusion of 0.1 micrograms/kilogram/hour increased blood melatonin from undetectable to approximately peak adult concentrations. Slow clearance makes replacement of a typical maternal circadian rhythm problematic. The pharmacokinetic profile of melatonin in preterm infants differs from that of adults so dosage of melatonin for preterm infants cannot be extrapolated from adult studies. Data from this study can used to guide therapeutic clinical trials of melatonin in preterm infants.

Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) are known to alleviate joint stiffness and pain in rheumatoid arthritis patients. However, the mechanisms by which omega-3s exert their beneficial effects has not been fully explored. Herein we discuss a novel class of bioactive lipid mediators, which are enzymatically biosynthesized in vivo from omega-3 eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), termed resolvins. The bisphosphonates: risks and benefits of long term use.

Bisphosphonates are widely used globally as the main treatment for osteoporosis. Both safety and efficacy have only been rigorously evaluated in studies of relatively short duration (3-5 years), with smaller extension studies. The evidence for benefit beyond five years in intervention studies is limited and does not include proven efficacy against nonvertebral fractures.
