The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has published an update on the seasonal norovirus activity. The latest figures show that there have been 4,407 laboratory confirmed cases of norovirus this season (from week 27 to week 01 2013). The latest figures are 56% higher than the number of cases reported at this point last year, when there were 2,828 cases.

According to a report by the Health Service Journal (HSJ), the NHS Commissioning Board's plans to develop national policies for new treatments after receiving five individual funding requests from across the country.
According to the report, the Commissioning Board has proposed that, after PCTs are abolished at the end of March, there will be just one individual funding request panel covering each of its four regions. They will all work to a national set of policies.

According to a report by BioSpace.com, the US Food and Drug Administration has approved UCERIST (budesonide) extended release tablets for the induction of remission in patients with active, mild to moderate ulcerative colitis. The approved dosing regimen for adult patients is one 9 mg tablet taken orally once daily in the morning for up to 8 weeks.
[Editor's note: Currently, budesonide capsules (Budenofalk or Entocort) are only licensed for Crohn's disease in the UK.]

The British Medical Journal has featured a cross-sectional study aimed at estimating the risk of pulmonary embolism and venous thromboembolism in pregnant women after in vitro fertilisation (IVF).
Data from 23,498 women who had given birth after IVF between 1990 and 2008 (in Sweden), and 116,960 individually matched women with natural pregnancies were evaluated. Scotland creates fund for rare diseases

According to a report by PharmaTimes, a new £21 million fund has been made available to pay for rare orphan drugs that are not recommended by the Scottish Medicines Consortium. U.S. HIV treatment guidelines recommend branded once-daily, 1-pill efavirenz-emtricitabine-tenofovir as first-line antiretroviral therapy (ART).
