Systematic review: worldwide variation in the frequency of coeliac disease and changes over time
ConclusionsCoeliac disease is increasing in frequency, with significant geographical differences. Although few cases have been described to date in the Orient and Sub‐Saharan Africa, there is a significant prevalence of HLA DQ2 and wheat consumption is of the same order as that in Western Europe. CD may therefore become more common in the future in these countries. (Source: Alimentary Pharmacology and Therapeutics)

Protein Being Studied To Fight Cancer; May Cause Toxicity In Cardiac Cells
A study by researchers at Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences and the Department of Pharmacology at the University of California, San Diego, shows that a protein called MCL-1, which promotes cell survival, is essential for normal heart function. Their study, published in th journal Genes & Development, found that deletion of the gene encoding MCL-1 in adult mouse hearts led to rapid heart failure within two weeks, and death within a month. MCL-1 (myeloid cell leukemia-1) is an anti-apoptotic protein, meaning that it prevents or delays the death of a cell... (Source: Health News from Medical News Today)

Differential Effect of Ticagrelor Versus Prasugrel on Coronary Blood Flow Velocity in Patients With Non-ST-Elevation Acute Coronary Syndrome Undergoing Percutaneous Coronary Intervention: An Exploratory Study [Pharmacology]
Conclusions—
In patients with non–ST-elevation acute coronary syndrome undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention, ticagrelor augments CBFV to a greater extent than prasugrel when incremental doses of adenosine are administered. Although exploratory, these results may represent a pleiotropic action of ticagrelor, possibly contributing to its beneficial effects in such patients.

Cav2.3 (R‐type) calcium channels are critical for mediating anticonvulsive and neuroprotective properties of lamotrigine in vivo
Summary
PurposeLamotrigine (LTG) is a popular modern antiepileptic drug (AED); however, its mechanism of action has yet to be fully understood, as it is known to modulate many members of several ion channel families. In heterologous systems, LTG inhibits Cav2.3 (R‐type) calcium currents, which contribute to kainic‐acid (KA)–induced epilepsy in vivo. To gain insight into the role of R‐type currents in LTG drug action in vivo, we compared the effects of LTG to two other AEDs in Cav2.3‐deficient mice and controls on KA‐induced seizures.
MethodsBehavioral seizure rating and quantitative electrocorticography were pe...
