We present two patients with laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma in whom the spread and the depth of invasion was evaluated with transnasal GIE equipped with NBI. Based on our results, the vascular neoplastic changes of carcinoma in situ of the larynx could be similar to carcinoma in situ of the esophagus.

Conclusion: Our series results demonstrated that the best results were obtained when we correct all evident alterations of nasal septum and pyramid at a single stage. Unsuccessful results seen in our first group suggest that immediate correction of septum alone with delayed management of nasal pyramid deformity leads to a poorer outcome.

Abstract: Objectives: Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor variant III (EGFRvIII) has been believed to be an attractive tumor-specific candidate for molecular targeting therapy. However, there is little literature dealing with this variant of EGFR expressed in laryngeal carcinomas. In the present study, we try to evaluate the expression of EGFRvIII, as well as EGFR, in laryngeal carcinoma tissues and its correlation with clinicopathological features. Methods: Real-time polymerase chain reaction (real-time PCR) with TaqMan probes was applied to detect the expression for EGFR and EGFRvIII mRNA in the 39 pairs of samples of laryng...

Abstract: Ocular flutter is a relatively rare eye movement disorder characterized by intermittent bursts of conjugate horizontal saccades without an intersaccadic interval. Its anatomical and neurophysiological basis remains controversial. Here we present a case of ocular flutter in which the flutter declined as the clinical stage of the associated ailment declined, until it eventually disappeared. Radiological examination revealed a tiny lesion in the right upper pontine tegmentum that included areas of the reticular formation, superior cerebellar peduncle and locus ceruleus. Because the lesion occupied the upper part of ...

Conclusions: Postural restrictions do not increase the efficacy of the canal-repositioning maneuver despite the fact that patients report a subjective improvement after post-procedural instructions. In the review of the literature, all studies except one conclude that postural restrictions are unnecessary. However, a number of methodological issues such as inadequate sample size are not addressed and more conclusive evidence is required. Based on current evidence, the use of postural restrictions after the canal-repositioning maneuver is unjustified.

Conclusion Aspiration and ingestion of dental foreign objects are infrequent, but they can occur at large multidisciplinary dental procedures.
These episodes have the potential to result in acute medical and life-threatening emergencies since the beginning of the event
or at a late stage in proceeding in the underdiagnosed patient. Prevention of such incidents is, therefore, the best approach
via the mandatory use of precautions during all dental procedures, and in case of suspicion with no retrievable material,
patient must always be submitted to a radiographic study.

Abstract The middle ear is too complex a system for its function to be fully understood with simple descriptive models. Realistic mathematical
models must be used in which structural elements are represented by geometrically correct three-dimensional (3D) models with
correct physical parameters and boundary conditions. In the past, the choice of boundary conditions could not be based on
experimental evidence as no clear-cut data were available. We have, therefore, studied the deformation of the tympanic membrane
(TM) at its boundaries using X-ray microscopic computed tomography in human and gerbil while stat...

Abstract TRP genes encode a diverse family of ion channels which have been implicated in many sensory functions. Because several TRP
channels have similar properties to the elusive hair cell transduction channel, recent attention has focused on TRP gene expression
in the inner ear. At least four TRP genes are known to be expressed in hair cells: TRPC3, TRPV4, TRPA1, and TRPML3. However,
there is little evidence supporting any of these as a component of the transduction complex. Other less well-characterized
TRP channels are expressed in the inner ear, in particular, within the organ of Corti. Because of thei...

Abstract Autoimmune inner ear disease probably accounts for less than 1% of all cases of balance disorders, but its incidence is often

positional vertigo. An autoimmune mechanism seems to be responsible for 6% of unilateral and 16% of bilateral forms of Ménière’s
disease. Oscillopsia and disequilibrium secondary to a bilateral vestibular paresis are...

Abstract A sudden increase in the amplitude of a component often causes its segregation from a complex tone, and shorter rise times
enhance this effect. We explored whether this also occurs in implant listeners (n = 8). Condition 1 used a 3.5-s “complex tone” comprising concurrent stimulation on five electrodes distributed across the
array of the Nucleus CI24 implant. For each listener, the baseline stimulus level on each electrode was set at 50% of the

DISCUSSION: This novel miniplate seems to be improved when compared to other available devices. Rigid osteosynthesis of a Le Fort I osteotomy can be problematic because of the repositioning gap and the variable anatomy of the maxilla. The device must be rigid enough, inconspicuous, and well tolerated. Only three plate lengths are necessary to treat all cases, which reduces cost and storage. The only requirement is to mandatorily insert four plates every time. Removal of the plates does not seem necessary.

Muscular tumors are rare. They hardly ever present in jaws. Rhabdomyoma have never been reported in this localization. Clinical and radiological features are non-specific. The diagnosis is based on histopathological features. It is difficult to make for leiomyosarcoma. Surgical excision is the recommended treatment, conservative for leiomyoma, radical for other malignant tumors. Rhabdomyosarcoma has a good prognosis unlike leiomyosarcoma.

Cherubism is an extensive cystic-like growth mostly affecting the mandible. It is often diagnosed because of a swollen lower half of the face in children. There are familial and de novo cases. The autosomal dominant cases are related to exon 9 -SH3BP2 mutation. The treatment is mainly surgical combining cyst curettage and modeling resections. Anti-TNF therapy could be a new treatment option.

We present an exceptional case due to its localization and evolution. CASE: A 41-year-old female patient consulted for progressive swelling of the left frontoparietal region. CT-scan revealed thickening of the cranial medulla, without cerebral lesion. The tumor was removed. Histological analysis confirmed en plaque meningioma which recurred 7 years after. DISCUSSION: En plaque meningioma are a rare subtype of meningioma which rarely affects the skull vault. Relapse is frequent.

Abstract Narrow band imaging (NBI) is an optical technique in which a filtered light reveals superficial carcinomas in view of their
neoangiogenic pattern. The accuracy of NBI is implemented by combining it with a high definition television (HDTV) camera.
The aim of this study was to prospectively evaluate the diagnostic gain of NBI and HDTV in the assessment of laryngeal squamous
cell carcinoma (LSCC). Between April 2007 and December 2008, we analyzed by NBI with or without HDTV 279 patients divided
in two groups: Group A included 96 patients affected by LSCC and Group B included 183 subjects under follow-u...

Abstract Chemosensory dysfunction has been reported in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM). However, the clinical significance in
relation to the disease stage remains unclear. The aim of this investigation was to assess olfactory and gustatory function
with valid clinical tests in patients with DM types 1 and 2 with and without accompanying diseases. Seventy-six patients with
DM were divided into three groups according to disease stage. Taste function was tested by means of impregnated paper strips
and smell function was screened using a five-item smell identification test. The results of the patients with...

Abstract The aim of the study was to investigate whether the mutations of the GNAS gene and thyroid-stimulating hormone receptor (TSHR)
gene were a potential molecular biological mechanism for subclinical toxic multinodular goiter (sTMG) and to evaluate the
association of these mutations with the clinicopathological features of these disorders. Forty-four patients with sTMG and
20 controls (multinodular goiter) from Heilongjiang province of China who underwent subtotal thyroidectomy were recruited.
Genes’ mutations were analyzed by direct DNA sequencing of the polymerase chain reaction-amplified the parts ...

In conclusion, classical multi-slice
CT only on axial planes is not a reliable method to detect the invasion of AC. Preoperative clinical examination by suspension
laryngoscopy under general anesthesia has an approximately 30% failure rate. Peroperative examination must not be neglected
if possible.

Abstract Nasal packing may influence the mucociliary clearance of the nose in the postoperative healing phase. In an attempt to overcome
some of this problem, a haemostatic septal suturing technique was conceived. In this prospective study, we aimed to investigate
the effects of nasal packing and septal suturing technique on mucociliary clearance by rhinoscintigraphy. Forty-eight adult
patients who had undergone septoplasty were included in the investigation. Preoperatively, the patients were allocated into
three groups: group 1, fingerstall packs filled with gauze and smeared with vaseline were used (11 mal...
