We report a new case of Beare-Stevenson syndrome characterized by cutis gyrata, craniosynostosis, acanthosis nigricans, ear defects, a prominent umbilical stump and midface hypoplasia. He had dental findings of natal teeth and hypodontia of the primary and permanent teeth. This is the second patient with BSS syndrome to be reported with hypodontia and natal teeth; the first patient was described by Beare in 1969. We review the current literature to investigate the relation between dental anomalies and FGFR-related mutations in Beare-Stevenson syndrome and other craniosynostosis syndromes such as Apert, Crouzon and Pfeiffer...

Conclusions: patients with velocardiofacial syndrome presented morphological differences compared to individuals without morphofunctional alterations, which might be considered in the evaluation of patients with suspected diagnosis of the syndrome, as well as for the establishment of treatment protocols adequate to their needs. The present findings did not support the hypothesis of differences in pharyngeal dimensions mentioned by other authors, suggesting that the velopharyngeal insufficiency in these patients may be caused by functional alterations, rather than by anatomical differences. Key words: 22q11 deletion; Cephal...

DISCUSSION: Piezosurgery((c)) is a great progress for orthognatic surgery because of its precision and ability to preserve soft tissues. But it requires modification of the usual technique for mechanical section. Using peroperative inter maxillary fixation during ultrasonic splitting is a remarkably effective and easy technical modification.

Desmoplastic melanoma is a rare variant of malignant melanoma and one of the main causes of clinical and histological misdiagnosis in the realm of melanocytic neoplasms. Its relatively innocuous clinical appearance and the absence of pigmentation usually lead to a clinical misdiagnosis. The authors report a case of desmoplastic melanoma located in the lower lip of a 42-year-old man and review the literature regarding pathogenesis, clinicopathological features, differential diagnosis, and therapeutic management of desmoplastic melanomas.

We present an exceedingly rare case of carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma (CXPA) arising in a minor salivary gland of the upper lip. Conclusions: The finding of 2 cases of bilateral asymmetry among the 53 bilaterally dissected cadavers led to the consideration of each “hemi-head” as a single entity. This increased the sample size. Statistical analysis of the data, systematically broken down by sex and by side, showed that the second part of the maxillary artery is more likely to lie deep to the lower head of the lateral pterygoid muscle in females than in males, and that “side” is irrelevant.

Extraction of deeply impacted wisdom molars from the lower jaw with the bone osteotomy may necessitate removal of extra bone and complicate the procedure with damage to the inferior alveolar nerve and iatrogenic fractures of the mandible. In such cases, the sagittal split osteotomy offers excellent exposure to the operative field and minimizes bone loss at the mandibular ramus. The presented case includes removal of a deeply impacted lower third molar presenting mild infection from the mid-ramus using the sagittal split of the mandible. The sagittal split osteotomy, which appears to be a reliable technique, should be the m...

Compartment syndrome is a rare donor-site morbidity of the free fibula osteocutaneous flap in mandibular reconstruction. Then an anterolateral thigh flap was designed to cover the donor left leg defect.

Based on all information about dental traumatic injuries in textbooks and from American Association of Endodontists or International Association of Dental Traumatology guidelines, the emergency treatment for a horizontal root fracture is optimal repositioning as soon as possible, splint (4 weeks or longer), and follow-up the healing process at fracture line. In 75% of cases, healing will happen and it will not be necessary to remove the coronal pulp (even concomitant with uncomplicated crown fracture which has been managed well). Whenever we encounter signs and symptoms of a nonhealing process at fracture line (25%) we hav...

Stomatologic fungal infections display different etiologies, pathogenesis, and clinical presentations. The incidence of rare mycoses of oral cavity is very low. These infections can involve both immunocompromised and immmunocompetent patients with common predisposing factors, such as diabetes or suffering from diseases causing immune system impairment. Oral mycoses can cause acute, chronic, and mucocutaneous lesions. Candidiasis is the most common mouth mycosis. Although occasionally primary mouth pathogens, Cryptococcus spp. or filamentous fungi (Aspergillus spp. and zygomycetes) can cause oral mycoses, with the oral loca...

We report a rare case of necrotizing sialometaplasia in the larynx, probably initiated by an underlying malignant process. We suggest an aggressive diagnostic approach, when necrotizing sialometaplasia involves the larynx and no recent exposure to radiation, surgery or trauma has been recorded. Necrotizing sialometaplasia of the larynx should be regarded as secondary to malignancy until proven otherwise.

Pre-operative aspiration cytology and open biopsy revealed the tumor was a giant cell anaplastic carcinoma. There was no sign of distant metastasis. Two cycles of chemotherapy were very effective in treating the tumor but regrowth appeared to occur during hyperfractionated ...
