Abstract Nasal packing may influence the mucociliary clearance of the nose in the postoperative healing phase. In an attempt to overcome
some of this problem, a haemostatic septal suturing technique was conceived. In this prospective study, we aimed to investigate
the effects of nasal packing and septal suturing technique on mucociliary clearance by rhinoscintigraphy. Forty-eight adult
patients who had undergone septoplasty were included in the investigation. Preoperatively, the patients were allocated into
three groups: group 1, fingerstall packs filled with gauze and smeared with vaseline were used (11 mal...

Extracapsular spread (ECS) in the cervical lymph nodes represents the most significant adverse prognostic indicator in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC).In a consecutive cohort of OSCC treated by primary surgery, ECS was seen in 25% (101) of 400 patients.ECS doubled the incidence of local recurrence and distant metastases, but tripled regional failure. The recurrences occurred sooner in ECS than in non-ECS cases (206 vs 334 days, p = .04). Patients with macroscopic ECS had a 5-year overall survival (OS) of 19% compared with 31% in microscopic ECS. MRI neck staging offered poor sensitivity, especially in microscopic ECS. ...

In 2001, we presented a Cox regression model that is able to predict survival of the newly diagnosed patient with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). This model is based on the TNM classification and other important clinical variables such as age at diagnosis, sex, primary tumor site, and prior malignancies. We aim to improve this model by including comorbidity as an extra prognostic variable. Accurate prediction of the prognosis of the newly diagnosed patient with head and neck cancer can assist the physician in patient counseling, clinical decision-making, and quality maintenance. All patients with HNSCC of the...

There is great potential for targeted radionuclide therapy (TRT) in the treatment of head and neck cancer. In recent years, developments in fields such as antigen screening, protein engineering, and cancer biology have facilitated the rational design of targeted pharmaceuticals, with monoclonal antibodies forming the most rapidly expanding category. TRT may be a promising way to improve targeted treatment, especially in head and neck cancer, because of the intrinsic radiosensitivity of this tumor type. TRT may also provide a good foundation on which to build rational biologic combination therapies. In the next few years th...

The nasopalatine cyst is the most common epithelial and non-odontogenic cyst of the maxilla. It is of embryological origin. It is different from a radicular cyst. The diagnosis is based on radiographic and histological data. The treatment is enucleation. The surgical approach depends on the size of the cyst and its anterior or posterior extension. Excision must be total to avoid relapse which may occur beyond 5 years. Long-term follow-up is essential.

Langerhans cell histiocytosis (ex histiocytosis X) is usually present in children. It is a clonal proliferation of non-functional Langerhans's cells. Histological aspects are variable. The diagnosis is made in immunolabeling by anti-CD1a. Clinical presentations are variable, depending on their extension. Three syndromes are actually the same pathogenic process: eosinophilic granuloma (single or multiple osseous localizations), Hand-Schüller-Christian disease (chronic form with bone and visceral dissemination) and Abt-Letterer-Siwe disease (disseminated and acute malignant presentation).

Conclusions FNA cytology is useful in avoiding surgery (inflammatory lesions) or limiting surgical procedures (benign tumours). For planning
the extent of surgery of malignant parotid tumours, the histological subtype and/or grade should be determined; therefore,
a histological diagnosis by frozen section analysis is required. Moreover, reliance on FNA findings at the expense of clinical,

a septoplasty operation affecs the nasal mucociliary transport rate in the first and third months during the post-operative
period. Twenty-two patients who were diagnosed with NSD and 22 healthy controls were studied using rhinoscintigraphy with
Tc-99m-macroaggregated albumin (Tc-99m-MAA). On each case, the nasal mucociliary transport rate (NMTR) was measured pre-operatively
only on five cases, on the first and third months of post-operative period. The NMTRs of patients with a deviated septum were

Several concurrent circumstances have created an impression through the media of a presumed lack of specialists in Spain, which has one of the highest densities of doctors per population in the world: simultaneous creation of jobs in many newly built hospitals; accepting garbage contracts (for months, half/thirds of days, shifts) in relevant hospitals rather than moving to unattractive positions; full dedication to the field of public or private healthcare rather than matching them; bad public healthcare working conditions (low wages, excessive healthcare pressure, lack of respect from the public and from healthcare ma...

We report the management of 30 patients presenting with oligodontia. MATERIAL AND METHOD: The diagnosis was made on clinical and paraclinical data. The vertical and transversal facial dimensions, the three facial proportions, labial morphology, the number and localization of teeth, and occlusion were analyzed for future orthognathic and implant rehabilitation. The occlusion was studied transversally and vertically on dental casts. Rehabilitation with implant supported dental prostheses was chosen when conditions were met. The therapeutic protocol could include up to four chronological phases: the early prosthetic phase, th...

Conclusions Based on our histological findings, it should be further investigated whether there could be an association between angiogenesis
and osteoclastogenesis as a central pathway leading to bone destruction in the case of intraosseous hemangiomas.

We report a unique case of a fourth branchial cleft cyst found within the thymus of an adult patient. In the literature to date, there have been no reports of such a finding in the adult population. These anomalies can often cause recurrent acute suppurative thyroiditis or recurrent deep neck abscesses. Delay in recognizing the underlying etiology can lead to significant complications. Conclusions Patients treated for orbital trauma with the transconjunctival approach with canthotomy had a higher rate of lower eyelid
malposition. Transconjunctival incision without canthotomy was the most successful surgical approach for the treatment of
isolated fracture of the orbital floor; however, when major surgical exposure is necessary, subciliary incision is recommended.

Primary ciliary dyskinesia is a genetically inherited syndrome characterized by cilia immotility or dysmotility. Deficiency in mucociliary clearance produces chronic respiratory infections since birth, male sterility by spermatozoid immotility and situs inversus in 40-50% of patients (Kartagener's syndrome). Diagnosis is made by analyzing cilia motility with high-speed digital video and ciliar ultrastructure. The wide distribution and functions of the cilia in the body mean that this dysfunction can generate other ciliopathies apart from primary ciliary dyskinesia.

We report the case of a 35-year-old woman presenting hamartoma in the posterosuperior part of the right nasal cavity. Complete surgical resection by functional endoscopic sinus surgery was the treatment of choice to remove it completely. Hamartomas must be included in the differential diagnostic of unilateral nasal masses, along with inverted papillomas and malignant tumours.

CONCLUSIONS: Use of LigaSure((R)) decreased bleeding and surgical time in CBTs. Lesions of the artery are mainly caused by infiltration or by muscular hypotrophy of the artery, which frequently requires vascular reconstruction. Nerve injury continues to be an important postoperative complication, which may result in a reduction in the quality of life for the patient. The rates of nerve injury as a result of surgery were unchanged.

Radiofrequncy-tonsillotomy, which enables surgeons to reduce the size of the tonsillar tissue instead of removing the tonsils entirely, seems to be an effective and safe method of treating children with symptoms of enlarged tonsils.
