The Evaluation of Nasal Mucociliary Activity After Septoplasty and External Septorhinoplasty
Abstract The aim of this study was to evaluate the nasal mucociliary activity after septoplasty (SP) and external septorhinoplasty
(eSRP). Twenty patients who had SP operation (group 1) and 15 patients who had eSRP operation (group 2) were enrolled in the
study. On each case, mucociliary clearance (MCC) measurement was performed by saccharine test before surgery, and on the first
and third months of postoperative period. Saccharine clearance time (SCT) of 28 healthy volunteers were measured to establish
control values. The mean SCT in control group was 8.79 ± 2.63 min, in group 1 patients bef...

Endaural access to remove the projectile from a firearm
Discussion For proper exposure of the region, several studies were designed to evaluate the patterns of branching and anastomosis of
the facial nerve. As for the best cosmetic result with the different pre-auricular approaches, the endaural approach was described
as an approach that offers great cosmetic results because the incision design guides the surgeon in the wound closure and
causes a decrease in the tension of flap, unlike that observed by some authors.

Matrix metalloproteinases and their impact on sinusal extension in chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps
The objective of the present study was to evaluate gene expression
of MMP-1, MMP-2, MMP-9 and TIMP-1 gene expression in nasal polyps and compare them with normal nasal mucosa. Since MMPs could
induce a more prominent tissue edema, we also assessed if these gene expressions could be related to a more extensive disease.
For the experimental study, 30 nasal polyp samples from patients with CRSwNP (Chronic Rhinosinusitis with Nasal Polyposis)
and 19 middle turbinates (MT) from controls were obtained. Gene expression of MMP-1, MMP-2, MMP-9 and TIMP-1 was assessed
by qRT-PCR. The expressions of these genes were compared bet...

Volumetric CBCT analysis of the palatine process of the anterior maxilla: a potential source for bone grafts
Abstract: The aim of this research was to use cone-beam computerized tomography (CBCT) to analyze the available bone volume in the palatine process of the maxilla (PPM), which is a potential source of bone grafts. 20 CBCT scans were evaluated. From the most caudal axial slice of the PPM, the bony surface was calculated cranially up to the nasal floor. The predetermined thickness of each slice was 0.9mm. A 2mm safety margin was established considering the incisive canal and teeth 14–24. A ±0.1mm error deviation was established for all calculations. By connecting these points and those defined at the posterior bone bounda...

Velopharyngeal insufficiency as the initial manifestation of a Myotonic Dystrophy type 1: A case report
Abstract: Velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI) is a disorder affecting nasal resonance during speech. The most common cause of VPI is a cleft palate. However, VPI can occur as a consequence of a neuromuscular or neurologic disorder without a palatal malformation. Myotonic Dystrophy type 1 is a hereditary muscular disorder. In these cases, the abnormality is located on the 19q13.3 region, including a myotonic dystrophy protein kinase CTG repeat. This disease has several clinical manifestation features depending of the number of CTG repeats. The myotonic dystrophy can affect several muscle groups. VPI associated with the invol...

Echinacea cold study claims analysed
Conclusion
This study appears to show that giving healthy adults Echinacea every day for four months may result in an average 26% reduction in the combined number and duration of cold episodes compared to placebo over the same period. Combining outcomes in this way is a potentially useful way of reporting outcomes. However, in some cases it is used to “fish” for statistically significant findings when the individual outcomes fail to reach significance on their own. Indeed, when this combined variable was ‘disaggregated’ the researchers found no significant difference between the numbers of colds that occurred in th...

Quinoline Ring Derivatives Protect Against Aminoglycoside-Induced Hair Cell Death in the Zebrafish Lateral Line
We examined whether the protective activity of this
group of compounds was related to known targets of the quinoline derivatives. The protective effects did not seem linked to
either the cholinergic or histaminergic pathways that are regulated by some members of the quinoline family. However, all
eight protective drugs were found to reduce the uptake of aminoglycosides into hair cells. Subsequent experiments suggest
that reduction of uptake is the primary mechanism of protection among the quinoline drugs.

Epignathus Teratoma With Duplication of Mandible and Tongue: Report of a Case.
We report a female infant with presentation of epignathus teratoma involving duplication of both the mandible and tongue. Epignathus with duplication of the mandible has rarely been reported in the literature thus far. The location and extent of the tumor, as well as the involvement of adjacent structures, resulted in trismus and upper airway obstruction at birth. Thus, staged operations including debulking and correction of anatomical anomaly were performed on this patient after life-saving tracheostomy. As a result, we not only prevented morbidity associated with the anomaly but also refined the patient's appearance and ...

Acute isolated velopharyngeal insufficiency in children: case report and systematic review of the literature
Abstract Acute isolated velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI) is a clinical entity mainly reported in children. We undertook a systematic
review in order to better characterize its features. Following a Medline search (1960–2012), the authors reviewed and analyzed
the cases of acute VPI in children; 36 cases were found. The most common presenting features were hypernasal speech (97 %),
nasal reflux (73 %), and dysphagia (49 %). 73 % of the children were males and 27 % females, of 8.9 ± 2.5 years. In all the
cases the VPI was unilateral. One quarter of the children had ...

Abstract Pre-operative tracheostomy (POT) to secure a critical airway up to several weeks before definitive laryngectomy in patients
with laryngeal cancer has been proposed as a risk factor for poor oncologic outcome. Few modern papers, however, examine this
question. The aim of this study is therefore to determine whether POT affects oncologic outcome with an emphasis on stomal/peristomal
recurrence. This is a retrospective case note review of 60 consecutive patients undergoing curative primary total laryngectomy
(TL) for advanced laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Demographic, staging, treatment and ...

Ectomesenchymal Chondromyxoid Tumor: Report of a Case With Description of Histologic and Immunohistochemical Findings
The ectomesenchymal chondromyxoid tumor (ECT) is a rare tumor usually of the anterior tongue, first described by Smith et al in 1995. Since that time, a total of 44 cases of ECT have been reported in the literature. ECT is a painless, slowly growing nodule that is usually seen on the dorsum of the tongue. It can occur over a wide age range and can be present for many months to many years before the patient seeks treatment. Histologically, it is a lobular non-encapsulated proliferation of ovoid, round, and fusiform cells in a chondromyxoid background, often showing blunt infiltration of surrounding tissues. Focal cytologic ...

Tongue reduction for macroglossia in Beckwith Wiedemann syndrome: review and application of new technique
Abstract: Beckwith Wiedemann syndrome (BWS) is a rare, congenital overgrowth disorder that is characterized by macroglossia, anterior abdominal wall defects, visceromegaly, gigantism, and neonatal hypoglycaemia. Macroglossia may contribute to anterior open bite malocclusion with prognathism, speech articulation disturbances, drooling and the perception of intellectual disability. It was the purpose of this study to review a series of BWS patients who underwent surgical reduction of the tongue by a modified technique with respect to aesthetic and functional outcomes. Seven BWS patients, age 6 months to 21 months, had a ‘s...

Summary: Esophageal (SE) and tracheoesophageal (TE) speech are the most commonly used alaryngeal voicing types after total laryngectomy—a surgical procedure of removing a pathological larynx. Both SE and TE voices show more aperiodicity than normal laryngeal (NL) voices, and the vocal characteristics of alaryngeal voices are notoriously difficult to extract. The present study investigated the difference in vocal characteristics among NL, SE, and TE voices using perception measures and nonlinear dynamical analysis. Correlation dimension (D2) and sample entropy (SampEn) were obtained from 90 voice samples produced by 10 TE...

Early extraction: A reliable silver bullet to minimize nerve injury in lower third molar removal
The letter by Dr. Szalma replying to our article reveals his substantial and important work in this area, which further highlights the early extraction of lower third molars in order to avoid nerve injury. In our article ‘Early extraction: a silver bullet to avoid nerve injury in lower third molar removal?’, we evaluated the effects (particularly nerve injury) of early extraction of immature third molars in a limited clinical sample (only 808 lower third molar, 518 patients ≤23 years) and emphasized the role of a team consultation before early extraction of third molar. This concept of ‘team consultation’ include...
