pHPT and MEN1 alterations
Primary hyperparathyroidism (pHPT) represents one of the most common endocrine disorders in western populations. The genetic alterations underlying the sporadic forms of pHPT remain poorly understood. Alvelos et al. performed molecular characterisation of a series of sporadic pHPT cases. The results of their study suggest that MEN1 alterations, may represent the most prevalent genetic alteration in sporadic parathyroid tumours. Alvelos et al. (2013) European Journal of Endocrinology 168, 119-128.

Expression of selenoprotein P in beta cells
This study shows that pancreatic islets express relatively high levels of Sepp1 that may fulfill a function in antioxidant protection of beta cells. Thyroid hormone down-regulates SIRT1
Calorie deprivation has been proven to extend life span and reduce the rate of aging in several organisms, from yeast to rodents and primates. Sirtuin 1 (SIRT1), a NAD+-dependent deacetylase, has been connected to beneficial effects elicited by calorie restriction. Physiological adaptation to starvation requires higher activity of SIRT1 and also the suppression of thyroid hormone (TH) action to achieve energy conservation. Cordeiro et al. tested the hypothesis that those two events are correlated and that TH may be a regulator of SIRT1 expression in mice.
They found that SIRT1 protein content was down-regulated by TH in th...

Obese Women Taking Certain Contraceptive May Be At Increased Risk For Type 2 Diabetes
A first-of-its-kind study by researchers at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California (USC) indicates that healthy, obese, reproductive-age women who use long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) containing the hormone progestin have a slightly increased risk for developing type 2 diabetes when compared to those who use non-hormonal contraception. The research concludes that progestin-releasing LARC appears to be safe for use by such women but needs further investigation. Nicole M...

Cardiovascular and Systemic Risk in Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease -Atherosclerosis As a Major Player in the Natural Course of NAFLD.
Abstract
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) encompasses pure steatosis through nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and is the most common cause of chronic liver disease in Western countries. NASH is a progressive liver disease that increases the risk of cirrhosis and end-stage liver disease. Interestingly, the global health risk of NAFLD is not confined to the liver. Compared with those without NAFLD, patients with NAFLD exhibit not only increased liver-related complications and liver-related mortality but also increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease (CVD) and chronic kidney dise...

The role of recombinant human platelet-derived growth factor-BB (rhPDGF-BB) in orthopaedic bone repair and regeneration.
Abstract
Recombinant human PDGF BB homodimer (rhPDGF-BB) is a potent recruiter of, and strong mitogenic factor for, cells crucial to musculoskeletal tissue repair, including mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), osteogenic cells and tenocytes. rhPDGF-BB also up-regulates angiogenesis. These properties allow rhPDGF-BB to trigger the cascade of bone and adjoining soft tissue repair and regeneration. This mechanism of action has been established in numerous preclinical and clinical studies. Demonstration of the safety and efficacy of rhPDGF-BB in the healing of chronic foot ulcers in diabetic patients and regeneration of alv...

Latest research and development trends in non-insulin anti-diabetics.
Abstract
Type 2 diabetes mellitus, also called non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus, is a chronic endocrine disease characterized by insulin resistance in tissues such as fat, liver and skeletal muscle, and impaired insulin secretion in pancreatic β cells. The prevalence and incidence of type 2 diabetes exploded over last decades along with increased population obesity owing to western lifestyle factors such as lack of exercise and high calorie diets. As diabetes progresses without appropriate treatment, many micro- and macro-vascular complications occur, leading to increased risk of mortality. Although lifesty...

The Use of Vaptans in Clinical Endocrinology.
Conclusions:Vaptans can be considered a new effective tool for the treatment of euvolemic and hypervolemic hyponatremia. Nevertheless, more comparative research of vaptans vs other therapies on clinical grounds is needed to more accurately assess the value of these drugs in the treatment of hyponatremia.

Involvement of melanocortin receptor accessory proteins (MRAPs) in the function of melanocortin receptors.
Abstract
The melanocortin system integrates different agonists, competitive or inverse agonists, and receptors. Recent investigations have also discovered a specific system of melanocortin receptor accessory proteins (MRAPs) that are involved in the regulation of the functional expression of these receptors. MRAP1 mutations are responsible for type 2 familial glucocorticoid deficiency (FGD2), a rare autosomal disorder characterized by high plasma adrenocorticotropin hormone (ACTH) levels but severe cortisol deficiency. ACTH binds melanocortin 2 receptor (MC2R), a G protein-coupled receptor, in the adrenal gland to ...

Interaction between neonatal allopregnanolone administration and early maternal separation: Effects on adolescent and adult behaviour in male rat.
Abstract
Endogenous neurosteroids level fluctuations are related to several emotional and behavioural alterations. Neurosteroids also have important roles during neurodevelopment, with there being a relationship between modification of their levels in neurodevelopmental periods and behavioural alterations in adolescence and adulthood. Early maternal separation (EMS) is a stressful event that also alters neurodevelopment and adolescent and adult behaviour. The aim of the present study is to analyze the interaction between the effects of the neonatal alteration of allopregnanolone (AlloP), neurosteroid that increase ...
