People who eat their meals at a rapid pace could be contributing to the obesity epidemic, scientists warn. A study from Imperial College London has shown that eating food quickly prevents the release of a hormone that tells your brain when you're full.

With the current outbreak of influenza-like illnesses, many people are trying to boost their immune systems with supplements. Ginseng is often a key ingredient, but its therapeutic use may extend far beyond that. Researchers are now investigating whether ginseng can help relieve health problems ranging from diabetes to depression to erectile dysfunction. (Source: Diabetes News From Medical News Today)

Exp Clin Endocrinol DiabetesDOI: 10.1055/s-0029-1233448AbstractThe prevalence of overweight and obesity is increasing worldwide. The physiological mechanisms involved in body weight regulation are complex and incompletely understood. Increasing evidence suggests that obesity is a multifactorial disease where many, if not all, organs of the body are involved. The adipose tissue was considered as a simple fat accumulation for a long period of time. However, nowadays it is fascinating to progressively discover its involvement in hormonal, inflammatory or immune system dysregulation. Adipokines and cytokines are involved in co...

CONCLUSIONS: The use of the Framingham function for prediction of the first CHD event is likely to overestimate an individual's absolute CHD risk. In CHD prevention, application of the SCORE and UKPDS functions might be useful in the absence of a more valid tool.

Horm Metab ResDOI: 10.1055/s-0029-1241807AbstractFemale Wistar-Kyoto rats (WKY) show a 4-day estrous cycle. The aim of this study was to examine the impact of 17β-estradiol supplementation every fourth day to ovariectomized rats – mimicking the physiological estrous cycle – on regulation of blood pressure. We monitored blood pressure telemetrically in intact females, ovariectomized (OVX), and ovariectomized WKY injected subcutaneously with 17β-estradiol (OVX) in a 4-day rhythm for 24 weeks. Blood pressure decreased both in intact females and OVX, whereas that of OVX persisted at constant levels. The u...

Role of lipid-derived mediators in skeletal muscle insulin resistance

Imbalance between nutritional intake and energy expenditure has been described to culminate in obesity, which predisposes to insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes mellitus. In such states of energy oversupply, excess amounts of lipids are available in tissues and circulation. Over the past years, an increasingly important role in development of skeletal muscle (SkM) insulin resistance has been attributed to lipids and impaired fatty acid metabolism. In this review, we reflect the current state of knowledge about the effects of various lipid-derived mediators on SkM insulin sensitivity. Furthermore, potential mechanisms un...

Exp Clin Endocrinol DiabetesDOI: 10.1055/s-0029-1233452Abstract Insulin promotes ion transportation across epithelia, mainly kidneys, leading to water and electrolyte abnormalities, possibly causing ‘insulin oedema syndrome’, which rarely presents as pleural effusion. Direct stimulation of sheep pleura by insulin and the possible electrophysiology mechanisms involved were investigated.[...]© J. A.
