Temporal profiles of axonal injury following impact acceleration traumatic brain injury in rats—a comparative study with diffusion tensor imaging and morphological analysis
Abstract Traumatic axonal injury (TAI) plays a major role in the development of neurological impairments after traumatic brain injury
(TBI), but it is commonly difficult to evaluate it precisely and early with conventional histological biomarkers, especially
when the patients experience short-term survival after TBI. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) has shown some promise in detecting
TAI, but longitudinal studies on the compromised white matter with DTI at early time points (≤72 h) following impact acceleration
TBI are still absent. In the present study, rats were subjected to the Marmarou model and im...

The correlation of the lifestyle and medical conditions with the vaginal infections and production of 2-phenylethanol
Conclusion The medical exposure to irradiation, marital status, and number of partners as well as stress factors (miscarriages, chronic,
viral, or tumor illnesses) had the highest influence on the development of the bacterial/fungal/viral infections. The formation
of 2-phenylethanol, both in vivo and in vitro, was confirmed and connected with Candida species. Besides, according to statistical tests, it seems that presence of symptoms, hrHPV DNA, and Ureaplasma urealyticum had also significant role on the formation of 2-phenylethanol in vivo.

Understanding the Y chromosome variation in Korea—relevance of combined haplogroup and haplotype analyses
Abstract We performed a molecular characterization of Korean Y-chromosomal haplogroups using a combination of Y-chromosomal single
nucleotide polymorphisms (Y-SNPs) and Y-chromosomal short tandem repeats (Y-STRs). In a test using DNA samples from 706 Korean
males, a total of 19 different haplogroups were identified by 26 Y-SNPs including the newly redefined markers (PK4, KL2, and
P164) in haplogroup O. When genotyping the SNPs, phylogenetic nonequivalence was found between SNPs M117 and M133, which define
haplogroup O3a3c1 (O3a2c1a according to the updated tree of haplogroup O by Yan et al. (European Journal...

Perspectives on Erving Goffman’s “Asylums” fifty years on
Abstract Erving Goffman’s “Asylums” is a key text in the development of contemporary, community-orientated mental health practice.
It has survived as a trenchant critique of the asylum as total institution, and its publication in 1961 in book form marked
a further stage in the discrediting of the asylum model of mental health care. In this paper, some responses from a range
of disciplines to this text, 50 years on, are presented. A consultant psychiatrist with a special interest in cultural psychiatry
and mental health legislation, two collaborating psychotherapists in adult and forensic mental he...

Demystifying “oxi” cocaine: Chemical profiling analysis of a “new Brazilian drug” from Acre State
Abstract: Recent information from various sources suggests that a new illicit drug, called “oxi”, is being spread across Brazil. It would be used in the smoked form and it would look like to crack cocaine: usually small yellowish or light brown stones. As fully released in the media, “oxi” would differ from crack cocaine in the sense that crack would contain carbonate or bicarbonate salts whereas “oxi” would include the addition of calcium oxide and kerosene (or gasoline). In this context, this work presents a chemical profiling comparative study between “oxi” street samples seized by the Civil Police of the...

Clinical neuropsychology in forensic contexts: Practitioners' experience, training, and practice.
Despite their increasing involvement in the United States legal system, little is known about neuropsychological practitioners working in forensic contexts. Neuropsychologists (N = 59) recruited from the American Academy of Clinical Neuropsychology and the National Academy of Neuropsychology were surveyed about their experience, training, and practice. The majority of participants reported practicing in both civil and criminal forensic contexts (64%), with a minority restricting their practice to civil cases only (34%); practicing solely within the criminal forensic context was rarely reported (2%). Participants reported c...

Suicidal sodium azide intoxication: An analytical challenge based on a rare case
Conclusion: Sodium azide poisoning by ingestion has to date remained extremely rare and our case highlights the extreme lability of sodium azide as it was absent in the blood, in spite of significant concentrations in stomach content and some tissues. Therefore, the necessity of multiple tissues samples during autopsy should be underlined.

Applicability of Greulich and Pyle and Demirijan aging methods to a sample of Italian population
Abstract: Age estimation in forensics is essential in cases involving both living and dead subjects. For living subjects, age estimation may be used to establish an individual's status as a minor in cases involving adoption, criminal responsibility, child pornography, and those seeking asylum. Criteria for age estimation in the living have recently been put forth by The Study Group on Forensic Age Diagnostics. The group has proposed guidelines with a three-step procedure: a physical examination and anthropometrical analysis; dental analysis by orthopantomogram (OPG); and X-ray study of the left hand and wrist. The board of...

Age estimation charts for a modern Australian population
Abstract: Calculation of the biological age of an individual has application in many fields of dentistry. It can be used to determine the appropriate timing of interventionist treatment for example in orthodontics; to analyse the developmental stage of an individual relative to the general population in the management of genetic or congenital conditions which disturb growth; and to estimate the age of a living or deceased person for forensic purposes. Many of the techniques used to estimate age can be quite time consuming to complete. This time component is a major disadvantage in a forensic context when age estimations in ...

Measuring human remains in the field: Grid technique, total station, or MicroScribe?
Abstract: Although three-dimensional (3D) coordinates for human intra-skeletal landmarks are among the most important data that anthropologists have to record in the field, little is known about the reliability of various measuring techniques. We compared the reliability of three techniques used for 3D measurement of human remain in the field: grid technique (GT), total station (TS), and MicroScribe (MS). We measured 365 field osteometric points on 12 skeletal sequences excavated at the Late Medieval/Early Modern churchyard in Všeruby, Czech Republic. Fatal Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia in the Felty syndrome: A maltreatment-suspected case
Abstract: Familial neglect was suspected when an older deceased female was found to have large decubitus ulcers and weight loss. Postmortem examinations including histopathology and bacterial culture revealed systemic Staphylococcus aureus infection as the cause of death. The victim might have exhibited Felty syndrome, which is characterized by complications of splenomegaly and neutropenia in the underlying rheumatoid arthritis. As a result of neutropenia, the affected individual was susceptible to skin ulcer formation and sepsis. The manifestation of pressure ulcers as abuse biomarkers should also be explored from interac...

Toxicological and pathological findings in a series of buprenorphine related deaths. Possible risk factors for fatal outcome
Abstract: Buprenorphine is considered to have little respiratory side effects at therapeutic doses and the partial agonistic properties should produce a “ceiling effect” for respiratory depression at higher doses. Still, there are several reports on buprenorphine related deaths. Most deaths involve drug users and the co-administration of other CNS depressant drugs as well as reduced tolerance have been suggested to be risk factors. The primary aims were to investigate if lack of tolerance and/or co-ingestion of other psychotropic drugs are significant risk factors in buprenorphine fatalities. From July 2005 to Septembe...

Detecting Sample Misidentifications in Genetic Association Studies
Genetic association studies require that the genotype data from a given person can be correctly linked to the phenotype data from the same person. However, sample misidentification errors sometimes happen, whereby the link becomes invalid for some of the subjects in a study. This can have substantial consequences in terms of power to detect truly associated variants. In family-based studies, Mendelian inconsistencies can be used to detect sample misidentification. Genome-wide association studies (GWAS), however, typically use unrelated individuals, making error detection more problematic.
Here we present a method for ident...

Differential gene expression during metamorphosis: a promising approach for age estimation of forensically important Calliphora vicina pupae (Diptera: Calliphoridae)
Abstract Necrophagous blow fly larvae can provide accurate estimates of the minimum postmortem interval in death investigations. During
larval development, predictable morphological changes occur and measurements of weight, length, and width are compared to
species-specific growth curves for reliable age estimates. However, aging blow fly pupae is more challenging because morphological
and anatomical changes are not visible with the naked eye. Thus, delicate preparation of the pupae or rearing to the adult
stage seems unavoidable. Conversely, metamorphosis evokes a remodelling of the larval shape to adult st...

DBT in an outpatient forensic setting.
Abstract
Literature shows that effective treatment of borderline personality disorder (BPD) has become possible. However, borderline patients in forensic psychiatry do not seem to benefit from this development. In forensic psychiatry, prevention of criminal recidivism is the main focus of treatment, not core borderline problems like parasuicidal and self-destructive behavior. A dialectical behavioral treatment program for BPD was implemented in an outpatient forensic clinic in The Netherlands. Sociodemographic, clinical, and treatment data were collected from ten male, and nineteen female forensic BPD patients, and...

A survey of the potency of Japanese illicit cannabis in fiscal year 2010
Abstract: In recent years, increased ‘cannabis potency’, or Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) content in cannabis products, has been reported in many countries. A survey of Japanese illicit cannabis was conducted from April 2010 to March 2011. In Japan, all cannabis evidence is transferred to the Minister of Health, Labour and Welfare after criminal trials. The evidence was observed at Narcotics Control Department offices in major 11 cities. The total number of cannabis samples observed was 9072, of which 6376 were marijuana. The marijuana seizures were further classified, and it was found that in terms of the number of s...

[Body's integumentary restoration after autopsy: Legislative, technical and ethical issues.]
Abstract
In France, families of the deceased raised concerns as regards to the conditions of restoration of body. If scientists hospital autopsies are organized by the Bioethics Law of August 6, 2004, the forensic autopsies were so far not provided with such a legal framework. The legislator has proposed the creation of a new chapter in the Code of Criminal Procedure institutionalizing forensic activities. This legislative evolution allows the harmonization of practices; forensic pathologists must be involved in these changes by bringing their scientific expertise, notably through improving their autopsy techniques...

Aspects of matrix effects in applications of liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry to forensic and clinical toxicology-a review.
Abstract
In the last decade, liquid chromatography coupled to (tandem) mass spectrometry (LC-MS(-MS)) has become a versatile technique with many routine applications in clinical and forensic toxicology. However, it is well-known that ionization in LC-MS(-MS) is prone to so-called matrix effects, i.e., alteration in response due to the presence of co-eluting compounds that may increase (ion enhancement) or reduce (ion suppression) ionization of the analyte. Since the first reports on such matrix effects, numerous papers have been published on this matter and the subject has been reviewed several times. However, none...

Managing risks of violence in a youth mental health service: a service model description
Conclusion: Assessing and managing risks of violent offending among young patients are both clinically indicated for a proportion of patients and feasible via a forensic outreach model. Given the proliferation of early psychosis services worldwide, the issue of managing, and ideally preventing, patient risk of violence will almost certainly have wide application. However, a comprehensive evaluation of this model is required to ultimately determine the effectiveness of this approach for improving patient outcomes.

Reply to the letter by Dr. Palmiere and Dr. Mangin
In the letter , the authors suggested that diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) was the direct cause of death and positional asphyxia was a contributing factor in our case , mainly based on the results of postmortem biochemical analyses. We are certain that their opinions should be mostly reasonable. However, we could not determine that the blood levels of ketone bodies such as acetone (204.2μg/ml) and 3-beta-hydroxybutyrate (3HB, 11,844μmol/l) absolutely led to fatal outcome in our case. In addition, we could not exclude the possibility that the polymorphonuclear leukocyte had infiltrated around the subcutaneous hemorrhages in t...

Diagnostic Accuracy of Eye Movements in Assessing Pedophilia
Conclusions. Despite some methodological limitations, measuring eye movements seems to be a promising approach to assess deviant pedophilic interests. Eye movements, which represent automatic attentional processes, demonstrated high diagnostic accuracy. Estimating the accuracy of neurocognitive effort measures in the absence of a “gold standard”.
This study uses latent class modeling (LCM) implemented in a Bayesian framework to estimate SVT classification accuracy based on data obtained from real-life forensic evaluations. We obtained archival data from 1,301 outpatient evaluees who underwent testing with the Computerized Assessment of Response Bias (CARB), the Test of Memory Malingering (TOMM), and the Word Memory Test (WMT) in a forensic evaluation context. Under various data models, Markov chain Monte Carlo methods implemented via WinBUGS converged to target distributions that permitted Bayesian estimates of SVT accuracy. Under the most plausible model (conditio...

Population genetic investigation of eight X-chromosomal short tandem repeat loci from a northeast German sample
Especially in complex cases, typing of X-linked short tandem repeats has increasingly become an important role in kinship testing. A set of 318 participants of Caucasoid origin, 159 females and 159 males, from northeast Germany were analyzed using the X-STR loci DXS8378, HPRTB, DXS7423, DXS7132, DXS10134, DXS10074, DXS10101 and DXS10135 as well as Amelogenin. Peripheral blood samples and buccal swabs, respectively, were obtained from unrelated individuals, who signed an informed statement of compliance according to the approval of the Rostock university Ethics committee (reg. no. II HV 16/2003). DNA was purified using Nucl...
