Humeral development from neonatal period to skeletal maturity—application in age and sex assessment
Abstract The goal of the present study is to examine cross-sectional information on the growth of the humerus based on the analysis
of four measurements, namely, diaphyseal length, transversal diameter of the proximal (metaphyseal) end of the shaft, epicondylar
breadth and vertical diameter of the head. This analysis was performed in 181 individuals (90 ♂ and 91 ♀) ranging from birth
to 25 years of age and belonging to three documented Western European skeletal collections (Coimbra, Lisbon and St. Bride).
After testing the homogeneity of the sample, the existence of sexual differences (Student’s t...

Genetic study of 12 X-STRs in Malay population living in and around Kuala Lumpur using Investigator Argus X-12 kit
Abstract We investigated 12 X-chromosomal short tandem repeat (STR) polymorphisms in 283 unrelated Malay individuals (160 males and
123 females) living in and around Kuala Lumpur using the Investigator Argus X-12 kit. Heterozygosity among the present 12
X-STRs showed a distribution of from 55.3 to 93.5 %. The diversity values of the haplotypes constructed using four closely
linked groups were all higher than 0.9865. A comparison of allelic frequency in each system and haplotype variation indicated
that the nature of these X-STRs in the Malay population differed from that in East Asian, European, or Afri...

Prime Suspect: Did the Science Consultant Do It?
It’s no secret that Jen-Luc Piquant is a huge fan of the TV series Bones , and last week’s episode was particularly amusing because it poked fun at Hollywood and science consultants. Entitled “The Suit on the Set,” the plot brought Booth and Brennan to Tinsel Town to visit the set of a fictional movie being made of Brennan’s (equally fictional) bestselling novel. True to form, once the camera starts rolling and Brennan hears the first line of Hollywood “science-y dialogue,” she hollers “Cut!” and launches into a lengthy objection about the inaccuracy of the scientific d...

Kinking of a coronary artery as a rare complication in mitral valve replacement
We present the case of a 70-year old woman who had elective mitral and aortic valve surgery. She underwent surgery without complications for about 4h until 4 pm. Approx. 3h after surgery her condition deteriorated. 1500ml of blood were collected in the chest drainage until 11 pm. An emergency thoracotomy in the patient's bed showed a ventricular rupture. Death occurred around 11:30 pm.At autopsy, the implants of the biological mitral and aortic valves were found to be sewn tightly. There was no vascular injury and no unusual bleedings to the mediastinum. In the left ventricular wall, a rupture of 1cm and a surrounding fres...

Estimation of sex from hand and handprint dimensions in a Western Australian population
Abstract: A number of recent studies have demonstrated that sex can be estimated with a high degree of expected accuracy through the analysis of anthropometric measurements of the hand. Presently, however, the majority of previous related research has been focused on a limited range of global populations. The aim of the present study, therefore, is to evaluate the accuracy of using anthropometric hand measurements for the estimation of sex in a contemporary adult Western Australian population; we also assess if sex can be accurately estimated from the measurement of handprints. The study sample comprises a total of 91 male ...

A placebo-controlled study to assess Standardized Field Sobriety Tests performance during alcohol and cannabis intoxication in heavy cannabis users and accuracy of point of collection testing devices for detecting THC in oral fluid
Conclusions SFST were mildly sensitive to impairment from cannabis in heavy users. Lack of sensitivity might be attributed to tolerance
and time of testing. SFST were sensitive to both doses of alcohol. The Dräger Drug Test® 5000 appears to be a promising tool
for detecting THC in oral fluid as far as correct THC detection is concerned.

Impaired bone mineralization accompanied by low vitamin D and secondary hyperparathyroidism in patients with femoral neck fracture
Conclusion Taken together, our data suggest that impaired bone mineralization accompanied by low serum 25-(OH) D levels is of major importance
in the etiology of femoral neck fractures. Therefore, balancing serum 25-(OH) D levels and thereby normalizing PTH serum levels
may counteract pronounced mineralization defects and might decrease the incidence of femoral neck fractures.

Post-mortem computed tomography and 3D imaging: anthropological applications for juvenile remains
Abstract Anthropological examination of defleshed bones is routinely used in medico-legal investigations to establish an individual’s
biological profile. However, when dealing with the recently deceased, the removal of soft tissue from bone can be an extremely
time consuming procedure that requires the presence of a trained anthropologist. In addition, due to its invasive nature,
in some disaster victim identification scenarios the maceration of bones is discouraged by religious practices and beliefs,
or even prohibited by national laws and regulations. Currently, three different radiological techniques ma...

Radiographic evaluation of Gustafson’s criteria for the purpose of forensic age diagnostics
Abstract The main criteria used in dental age estimation in living young individuals are mineralisation and eruption of the third molars.
In order to further diversify the spectrum of characteristics after completion of third molar development, tests were undertaken
to determine whether the characteristics studied by Gustafson can be ascertained with the required forensic certainty with
the aid of the orthopantomogram and whether the evaluation of these could render forensic odontological age diagnoses possible
beyond the 18th year of life. For this purpose, 1,299 conventionally produced orthopantomograms of...

Car accidents as a method of suicide: A comprehensive overview
Abstract: The research literature provides evidence on the possible link between single-car accident drivers and suicidal intent, and some scholars have stressed the role of unconscious suicidal motivations in some single-car accidents. This paper review relevant literature on the topic and sheds light on neglected factors that may play a central role in reducing the number of deaths due to car accidents. We performed careful PubMed, and PsycInfo searches to identify all papers and book chapters in English during the period 1955–2011. Our overview of the literature indicates that above 2% of the traffic accidents are sui...

Potential use of DNA barcoding for the identification of tobacco seized from waterpipes
Abstract: DNA barcoding was adopted in our laboratory for the identification of tobacco (Nicotiana spp.) in moassel samples seized from “hookah bars”. As recommended by the CBOL Plant Working Group, we used a 2-locus combination of rbcL and matK as the plant barcode. As previously reported rbcL routinely produced high quality bi-directional reads but had a lower discriminating power than matK. It was much more difficult obtaining high quality bi-directional reads with matK possibly because of poor sample quality. DNA barcoding successfully identified tobacco in over 60 commercial tobacco moassel products. On the other ...

Preliminary study of the succession pattern of necrobiont insects, colonising species and larvae on pig carcasses in Temuco (Chile) for forensic applications
Abstract: Knowledge regarding the succession patterns of insects that visit carcasses as well as the other arthropod that colonise them and analysis of the parameters that are associated with larvae allow calculation of the minimum postmortem interval (PMI). This information is obtained from experiments carried out under specific geoclimatic conditions, which determine their application in forensic environments under similar conditions. The field study presented here is the first in Chile to analyse the decomposition process of pig carcasses and the associated succession of insects, colonising species and parameters relate...

Temporal profiles of axonal injury following impact acceleration traumatic brain injury in rats—a comparative study with diffusion tensor imaging and morphological analysis
Abstract Traumatic axonal injury (TAI) plays a major role in the development of neurological impairments after traumatic brain injury
(TBI), but it is commonly difficult to evaluate it precisely and early with conventional histological biomarkers, especially
when the patients experience short-term survival after TBI. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) has shown some promise in detecting
TAI, but longitudinal studies on the compromised white matter with DTI at early time points (≤72 h) following impact acceleration
TBI are still absent. In the present study, rats were subjected to the Marmarou model and im...

The correlation of the lifestyle and medical conditions with the vaginal infections and production of 2-phenylethanol
Conclusion The medical exposure to irradiation, marital status, and number of partners as well as stress factors (miscarriages, chronic,
viral, or tumor illnesses) had the highest influence on the development of the bacterial/fungal/viral infections. The formation
of 2-phenylethanol, both in vivo and in vitro, was confirmed and connected with Candida species. Besides, according to statistical tests, it seems that presence of symptoms, hrHPV DNA, and Ureaplasma urealyticum had also significant role on the formation of 2-phenylethanol in vivo.

Abstract We performed a molecular characterization of Korean Y-chromosomal haplogroups using a combination of Y-chromosomal single
nucleotide polymorphisms (Y-SNPs) and Y-chromosomal short tandem repeats (Y-STRs). In a test using DNA samples from 706 Korean
males, a total of 19 different haplogroups were identified by 26 Y-SNPs including the newly redefined markers (PK4, KL2, and
P164) in haplogroup O. When genotyping the SNPs, phylogenetic nonequivalence was found between SNPs M117 and M133, which define

Perspectives on Erving Goffman’s “Asylums” fifty years on
Abstract Erving Goffman’s “Asylums” is a key text in the development of contemporary, community-orientated mental health practice.
It has survived as a trenchant critique of the asylum as total institution, and its publication in 1961 in book form marked
a further stage in the discrediting of the asylum model of mental health care. In this paper, some responses from a range
of disciplines to this text, 50 years on, are presented. A consultant psychiatrist with a special interest in cultural psychiatry
and mental health legislation, two collaborating psychotherapists in adult and forensic mental he...

Demystifying “oxi” cocaine: Chemical profiling analysis of a “new Brazilian drug” from Acre State
Abstract: Recent information from various sources suggests that a new illicit drug, called “oxi”, is being spread across Brazil. It would be used in the smoked form and it would look like to crack cocaine: usually small yellowish or light brown stones. As fully released in the media, “oxi” would differ from crack cocaine in the sense that crack would contain carbonate or bicarbonate salts whereas “oxi” would include the addition of calcium oxide and kerosene (or gasoline). In this context, this work presents a chemical profiling comparative study between “oxi” street samples seized by the Civil Police of the...

Applicability of Greulich and Pyle and Demirijan aging methods to a sample of Italian population
Abstract: Age estimation in forensics is essential in cases involving both living and dead subjects. For living subjects, age estimation may be used to establish an individual's status as a minor in cases involving adoption, criminal responsibility, child pornography, and those seeking asylum. Criteria for age estimation in the living have recently been put forth by The Study Group on Forensic Age Diagnostics. The group has proposed guidelines with a three-step procedure: a physical examination and anthropometrical analysis; dental analysis by orthopantomogram (OPG); and X-ray study of the left hand and wrist. The board of...

Age estimation charts for a modern Australian population
Abstract: Calculation of the biological age of an individual has application in many fields of dentistry. It can be used to determine the appropriate timing of interventionist treatment for example in orthodontics; to analyse the developmental stage of an individual relative to the general population in the management of genetic or congenital conditions which disturb growth; and to estimate the age of a living or deceased person for forensic purposes. Many of the techniques used to estimate age can be quite time consuming to complete. This time component is a major disadvantage in a forensic context when age estimations in ...

Fatal Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia in the Felty syndrome: A maltreatment-suspected case
Abstract: Familial neglect was suspected when an older deceased female was found to have large decubitus ulcers and weight loss. Postmortem examinations including histopathology and bacterial culture revealed systemic Staphylococcus aureus infection as the cause of death. The victim might have exhibited Felty syndrome, which is characterized by complications of splenomegaly and neutropenia in the underlying rheumatoid arthritis. As a result of neutropenia, the affected individual was susceptible to skin ulcer formation and sepsis. The manifestation of pressure ulcers as abuse biomarkers should also be explored from interac...

Toxicological and pathological findings in a series of buprenorphine related deaths. Possible risk factors for fatal outcome
Abstract: Buprenorphine is considered to have little respiratory side effects at therapeutic doses and the partial agonistic properties should produce a “ceiling effect” for respiratory depression at higher doses. Still, there are several reports on buprenorphine related deaths. Most deaths involve drug users and the co-administration of other CNS depressant drugs as well as reduced tolerance have been suggested to be risk factors. The primary aims were to investigate if lack of tolerance and/or co-ingestion of other psychotropic drugs are significant risk factors in buprenorphine fatalities. From July 2005 to Septembe...

Detecting Sample Misidentifications in Genetic Association Studies
Genetic association studies require that the genotype data from a given person can be correctly linked to the phenotype data from the same person. However, sample misidentification errors sometimes happen, whereby the link becomes invalid for some of the subjects in a study. This can have substantial consequences in terms of power to detect truly associated variants. In family-based studies, Mendelian inconsistencies can be used to detect sample misidentification. Genome-wide association studies (GWAS), however, typically use unrelated individuals, making error detection more problematic.
Here we present a method for ident...
