Residency Ranking
As a fourth year medical student I'm currently interviewing for IM programs. I am certain that I want to apply for GI in the future. I know its important to go to a university program and to find programs with GI fellowships. My question is, which is more important? After ranking those programs that are major university hospitals with GI fellowships, should I then rank those university programs without, or larger community programs WITH fellowships in the hope that they'll take their own residents? Thanks in advance for any advice (Source: Student Doctor Network Forums)

FDA Investigation Finds No Excess Bleeding Risk for Dabigatran
In its latest assessment of a highly controversial issue, the FDA has found no indication that bleeding rates for dabigatran (Pradaxa, Boehringer-Ingelheim) are any higher than the bleeding rates for warfarin. The FDA investigation was in response to the large number of post-marketing reports of bleeding in people taking dabigatran. Click here to for the full FDA statement. Here is the first paragraph of the statement: The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has evaluated new information about the risk of serious bleeding associated with use of the anticoagulants (blood thinners) dabigatran (Pradaxa) and warfarin (Co...

Tips for 3rd year elective in GI?
If anyone has any general tips, advice, book recommendations, website recommendations, etc for a third year student doing a GI rotation, that would be fantastic. I'm going to be with a single physician in a private practice (solo, I believe). I have Step Up to Medicine and I'll be sure to read the GI section a few times, and I'll look at some YouTube videos to become more familiar with procedures, but that's about all I have. Any other resources I should check out? I have my texts from the first two years, but I'll be flying to another state for this rotation -- should I lug my path, pharm, and physio texts along with me? ...

Bariatric arterial embolization
Still being tested on animal models but pretty exciting nonetheless. “Currently, there are three clinically viable surgical alternatives for obesity: gastric bypass surgery, gastric pacing and endoscopic gastric banding. These procedures have varying success rates; they are invasive, require extensive gastric/bowel reconstruction or external devices and can have significant surgical complications,” explained Charles Y. Kim, M.D., assistant professor of radiology at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C., and lead investigator on one of the studies. “Our promising results led us to believe that a minimally...

Specific tests of gastrointestinal function
Esophageal motility study Functional disorders of the esophagus can be identified with esophageal motility studies(manometry). For these studies, a pressure-sensing tube is swallowed and positioned within the esophagus. Contractions of the esophageal muscle normally cause increases in pressure within the esophagus that can be monitored by the catheter during and between swallows of water. Among the abnormalities that can be seen are abnormally high or abnormally low pressures during swallow-associated contractions and/or during spontaneous contractions unassociated with swallows. Osteopathic Cardiothoracic Surgery
I am interested in pursuing thoracic surgery, as I have been shadowing a wide range of doctors. In the military, I worked with several primary care physicians and anesthesiologists. After the military, I shadowed extensively (near 150 hours) IM physicians and cardiologists. As of now, I am shadowing an ENT, Gastro, and a thoracic surgeon. Thus far, thoracic surgery is really appealing. Therefore, I would like to inquire about osteopathic general surgery residency programs that have the potential to catapult an individual into a great thoracic surgery fellowship. I know the number of osteopathic fellowships are sparse, so p...

Socially Acceptable Ways to Pass Gas!
Okay. If I have trouble figuring out how to introduce this topic, I can't blame my 7 year old for handling it inappropriately! Lately our CFer has been very gassy and belching rather loudly. It's s frequent problem which I have discussed with his CF doc. Frankly I think we need a visit with a gastroenterologist, but that's another thread. At school, our kiddo has taken to emphasizing his gassiness, out of embarrassment I suspect, and trying to make everyone laugh. It's very disconcerting to the teachers and other children. I have discussed it with him, to no apparent satisfactory resolution. How do you ...

Hey guys, Firstly, congratulations on securing a place at Leicester! Although there will be time for play, unfortunately you do have to read a few bits and pieces from time to time and that's where I come in; I've got loads of books from phase 1 (I'm now in phase 2, so they helped me get there), that I'm wanting to sell. Most are on the reading list or are pretty standard text books for most medical students e.g. crash course books which tbh, is all you need at that stage. If you are interested in any of the following, then let me know and we can negotiate prices. I know it seems too early to be thinking about books etc...
