This study aimed to document the expression profiles of the three known DLC1 isoforms ([alpha], [beta] and [gamma]) in normal human tissues and human HCCs and address their functional and regulatory differences. We also aimed to determine the clinicopathological and prognostic significance of the DLC1 dominant isoform in human HCCs. Quantitative polymerase chain reaction was performed to determine the expressions of DLC1 isoforms in different normal human tissues and human HCCs. The clinicopathological and prognostic significance of DLC1 expression in HCC samples was also analysed. In addition, the functional roles of DLC1...

This study enrolled 55 consecutive patients with chronic liver disease who underwent a liver biopsy for histological assessment of liver fibrosis by the Metavir scoring system. Liver stiffness of the 55 patients and 25 healthy volunteers was evaluated by ARFI elastography and was expressed as the shear wave velocity. Cut-off values were determined using receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curves. Histological liver fibrosis was evaluated by Metavir scoring; F0: six cases, F1: 14 cases, F2: nine cases, F3: nine cases and F4: 17 cases. Liver stiffness determined by ARFI elastography was correlated with histological liver...

We report a case of esophageal vascular lesions resembling spider naevi in a patient with nonalcoholic cirrhosis who underwent an upper gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy. We observed the presence of multiple white round elevations, 5[ndash]6 mm in size, with radiating thin-walled vessels, in the middle and distal esophagus. The histological examination documented the presence of multiple dilated blood vessels in the mucosal layer of the esophagus, with striking thickening of the endothelium wall. There was no evidence of esophagogastric varices, but only of a moderate congestive antral gastropathy. To our knowledge, these en...

Controversies exist about the management of esophageal perforation in order to eliminate the septic focus. The aim of this study was to assess the etiology, management, and outcome of esophageal perforation over a 12-year period, in order to characterize optimal treatment options in this severe disease. Between May 1996 and May 2008, 44 patients (30 men, 14 women; median age 67 years) with esophageal perforation were treated in our department. Etiology, diagnostic procedures, time interval between clinical presentation and treatment, therapeutic management, and outcome were analyzed retro- or prospectively for each patient...

Conclusions & Inferences Laser microdissection combined with real-time RT-PCR is a novel technique to reliably detect and quantify site-specific expression of low-abundance mRNAs (e.g. growth factors, neurotransmitter receptors) related to the human enteric nervous system. This technical approach expands the spectrum of available tools to characterize enteric neuropathologies underlying human gastrointestinal motility disorders at the molecular biological level.

Conclusion Colonoscopy-related perforation can progress to peritonitis and sepsis, resulting in serious morbidity or death. High-anesthetic

The cytokine-deficiency-induced colitis susceptibility (Cdcs)1 locus is a major modifier of murine inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and was originally identified in experimental crosses of interleukin-10-deficient (Il10-/-) mice. Congenic mice, in which this locus was reciprocally transferred between IBD-susceptible C3H/HeJBir-Il10-/- and resistant C57BL/6J-Il10-/- mice, revealed that this locus likely acts by inducing innate hypo- and adaptive hyperresponsiveness, associated with impaired NF-[kappa]B responses of macrophages. The aim of the present study was to dissect the complexity of Cdcs1 by further development and ch...
