US researchers who transplanted human intestinal microbes into germ-free mice and then switched their diet from a low-fat plant-based one to a more Westernized diet, high in fat and sugars, found that within one day obesity-linked microbes were thriving in the gut and the mice eventually became obese. The study was the work of Dr Jeffrey I Gordon and colleagues and was published on 11 November in the journal Science Translational Medicine.

Scientists at a group of 11 research centers in China are reporting for the first time assembly of the largest-ever collection of data about the proteins produced by genes in a single human organ. Their focus was the liver, and their massive database in both protein and transcript levels could become a roadmap for finding possible new biomarkers and treatments for liver disease.

Conclusions We found high expressions of α4 integrin and CX3CR1 on monocytes in patients with active UC, known to promote the extravasation of CD14+CD16+ monocytes into the mucosa. GMA effectively depletes CD14+CD16+ monocytes and concomitantly increases CD14hiCD16−CCR2low “immature” monocytes; thus GMA was associated with the emergence of less inflammatory monocyte phenotype in circulation.

Conclusions & Inferences Intrapancreatic microenvironment in CP and PCa induces neuroplastic alterations under in-vitro conditions, leading to increased neural density and hypertrophy. Thus, due to its neurotrophic attributes, the intrapancreatic microenviroment in CP and PCa seems to be a key player in the generation of pancreatic neuropathy and neuroplasticity.

Intestinal edema remains a serious clinical problem and novel approaches to study its pathophysiology are needed. It was our aim to develop a long term stable isolated perfused rat small bowel preparation permitting analysis of vascular, luminal, interstitial and lymphatic compartments and to demonstrate the utility of this model by studying the effects of the pro-inflammatory mediator platelet-activating factor (PAF). A temperature-controlled chamber with an integrated balance was designed to perfuse isolated intestines through the mesenteric artery and the gut lumen. Steroids or oxygen carriers were not needed. Lysophosphatidic acid (LPA), a potent bioactive phospholipid, is a natural component of food products like soy and egg yolk. LPA modulates a number of epithelial functions and has been shown to inhibit cholera toxin induced diarrhea. Anti-diarrheal effects of LPA are known to be mediated by inhibiting chloride secretion. However, the effects of LPA on chloride absorption in the mammalian intestine are not known. The present studies examined the effects of LPA on apical Cl(-)/OH(-) exchangers known to be involved in chloride absorption in intestinal epithelial cells. Caco-2 cells were treated with LPA and Cl(-)/OH(-) ex...

EndoscopyDOI: 10.1055/s-0029-1215321Development of an innovative method of endoscopic laser-supported diaphanoscopy, for precise demonstration of the location of gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) at laparoscopy is described. The equipment consists of a light transmission cable with an anchoring system for the gastric mucosa, a connecting system for the light source, and the laser light source itself. During surgery, transillumination by laser is used to show the shape of the tumor. The resection margins are then marked by electric coagulation. Ten patients have been successfully treated using this technique in laparo...

Tapeworms, or cestodes, are intestinal parasites; they are worms that are flattened like a tape measure. A tapeworm cannot live freely on its own - it survives within the gut (intestine) of an animal, including a human. A parasite is an animal or plant that lives in a host; another animal or plant. Tapeworm eggs generally enter the human host from animals through ingested food, especially raw or undercooked meat.
