Genetics and the causes of evolution: 150 years of progress since Darwin
This meeting is being organised in collaboration with the Genetic Society.
Organised by
Professor Michael Bonsall (University of Oxford) and Professor Brian Charlesworth FRS (University of Edinburgh)
Synopsis
In Darwin’s day, a lack of understanding of inheritance meant that the theory of evolution was incomplete. This crucial gap has been filled by over a century of research in genetics. This meeting shows how genetics contributes to our knowledge of the mechanisms of evolutionary change across a wide range of biological systems, from viruses to humans.
Current Speakers and Chairs include:

HIT and the Transformation of Clinical Research
The ARRA provides for a significant investment in health information technology (HIT) for the US. One of the required features of this investment is the ability for meaningful health information exchange between providers. While many have postulated the potential benefits of HIT over the last several years, there is still controversy about the use of this technology. However, with ARRA, the commitment to transformation of this sector is clear. In assessing the benefits of HIT, one of the exciting applications is to transform clinical research, especially for lifestyle or behavior studies. In this talk, we'll review the pot...

A Fresh Look at Host-Pathogen Interactions: New Tools
Interactions between pathogens and their hosts are an intricate web of measures and countermeasures, the study of which has uncovered basic mechanisms of how cells operate. My laboratory has been interested in how herpesviruses disable pathways of antigen presentation, an effort that has shed light on mechanisms of glycoprotein quality control and turnover.
Our studies rely on protein modification to visualize cells and proteins within them, and to control their functional properties. This can be done genetically through fusions with fluorescent reporter proteins. Alternatively, installation of tags that can be detected w...

New Frontiers in Psychiatric Disorder Research (HHS-Only)
Psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder, and obsessive compulsive disorder have huge costs to society. An estimated one in four adults in America, or almost 58 million people, suffer from a diagnosable mental disorder in a given year. Many of the major psychiatric disorders are life-long illnesses, with lost productivity and costs to our health care system that span decades. Progress in treating these disorders has been slow, because the underlying biological dysfunctions have remained unknown. However, by now exploiting the dramatic improvements that have occurred in gen...

Engineering Gene Networks: Integrating Synthetic Biology & Systems Biology
We present examples in which we integrate the development of a theoretical model with the construction of an experimental system. We also discuss the implications of synthetic gene networks for biotechnology, biomedicine and biocomputing.
Additionally, we present integrated computational-experimental approaches that enable construction of quantitative models of gene-protein regulatory networks using expression measurements and no prior information on the network structure or function. We discuss how the reverse-engineered network models, coupled to experiments, can be used: (1) to gain insight into the regulatory role of ...

Nanocourse: Principles of Electron Microscopy
Electron Microscopy (EM) was developed in the early 1930’s as a tool that allowed its users to capture images of biological specimen with greater resolution than that in optical-based light microscopy. To achieve this increase resolution, EM utilizes a beam of electrons to survey a sample. This also allows for increased magnification. Utilizing the technical advantages of EM allowed for the advancement of many biological questions during the mid-20th century, including studies on the extra-cellular matrix, viral infection and the relationships between cell structure and function. EM continues to be a valuable tool for re...

Can good science turn bad?
As science develops, so do opportunities for its misuse. In the 150 years since the publication of On the Origin of Species, Charles Darwin’s ideas have been used to justify programmes of enforced sterilisation, eugenics and even genocide. But what were the real links, if any, between Darwin and some of the worst atrocities in history?
Today, modern genetics allows us to screen our unborn children and build DNA databases of the population. These advances open up new and exciting possibilities, but at the same time raise difficult ethical questions and threaten a misuse of genetics. Join us in discussion as we conside...

Armand Leroi, an evolutionary developmental biologist working with Brian Eno and others, has been applying the techniques used by geneticists and linguists to track the movements of people across the globe. His starting point has been the polyrhythmic chants of Xhosa farmers and the grunts of Siberian pastoralists. He reveals their meaning and their connections.
