Public Health Nursing, Ethics and Human Rights
Abstract
Public health nursing has a code of ethics that guides practice. This includes the American Nurses Association Code of Ethics for Nurses, Principles of the Ethical Practice of Public Health, and the Scope and Standards of Public Health Nursing. Human rights and Rights‐based care in public health nursing practice are relatively new. They reflect human rights principles as outlined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and applied to public health practice. As our health care system is restructured and there are new advances in technology and genetics, a focus on providing care that is ethical and respects ...

Determinants of early case‐fatality among stroke patients in Maputo, Mozambique and impact of in‐hospital complications
The burden of stroke is increasing in developing countries that struggle to manage it efficiently. We identified determinants of early case‐fatality among stroke patients in Maputo, Mozambique, to assess the impact of in‐hospital complications. Patients admitted to any hospital in Maputo with a new stroke event were prospectively registered (n = 651) according to the World Health Organization's STEPwise approach, in 2005–2006. We assessed the determinants of in‐hospital and 28‐day fatality, independently of age, gender and education, and computed population attributable fractions. In‐hospital mortality was ...

Physical activity experiences of individuals living with a traumatic brain injury: a qualitative research exploration.
Abstract
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a significant public health issue due to the incidence, complexity, and cost associated with treatment. The purpose of this study was to determine physical activity (PA) knowledge, attitudes, intentions, and barriers among individuals with a TBI undergoing outpatient rehabilitation. Seventeen participants completed a series of group interviews regarding their PA needs. A qualitative research design was adopted and trustworthiness was established through investigator triangulation of data. A cross-case analysis was completed to identify themes and conceptual patterns. The mai...

Sitting and Watching the Others Being Active: The Experienced Difficulties in PE When Having a Disability.
Abstract
The experience of participation in physical activity was explored in a qualitative study with twenty Norwegian adults with physical and visual disabilities. The interviews showed that more than 75% of negative experiences reported in this study originated from physical education (PE), suggesting that this was a particularly challenging arena. The negative experiences were centered in these common themes: experiences of not being included, experiences of failing, and experiences of not being listened to. The interviews were analyzed applying an existential-phenomenological approach. The participants with re...

Acquiring a stable estimate of physical activity in adults with visual impairment.
Abstract
As a first step toward the development of adapted physical activity (PA) programs for adults with visual impairment (VI), the purpose of this study was to determine the time frame needed to reliably estimate weekly PA in adults with VI. Thirty-three adults with VI completed 7 days of pedometer-based PA assessment. Generalizability theory analyses were conducted to quantify sources of variance within the PA estimate and determine the appropriate number of days of PA monitoring needed for the total sample and for participants with mild-to-moderate and severe VI. A single-facet, crossed design was employed in...

Intracyclic velocity variation and arm coordination assessment in swimmers with down syndrome.
This study examined the differences in intracycle velocity variation and arm coordination in front crawl in swimmers with Down syndrome in three breathing conditions. International swimmers with Down syndrome (N = 16) performed 3 × 20 m front crawl at 50 m race speed: without breathing, breathing to the preferred side, and breathing to the nonpreferred side. A two dimensional video movement analysis was performed using the APASystem. Breathing conditions were compared using Repeated Measures ANOVA. Swimming velocity was higher without breathing and intracyclic velocity variation was higher while breathing. Swimmers tended...

Physical activity and sedentary behavior in older adults with intellectual disabilities: a comparative study.
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the physical activity patterns of older adults with intellectual disabilities (ID) in comparison with younger adults with ID and older adults without ID. A sample of 109 participants was included in the study. Sophisticated data reduction, time stamped technology, and multiple objective measures (i.e., pedometers and accelerometers) were used to determine physical activity intensities and walking patterns of participants. Results indicate that older adults with ID are performing less physical activity than comparison groups. A small proportion of older adults with I...

Perceptions of constraints to leisure time physical activity among latinos in wake county, north Carolina.
Conclusions. This study highlighted that among Latinos, there may be an opportunity to increase activity levels by targeting knowledge about PA resources, increasing access to opportunities for PA, and enhancing the social environment for PA. Such efforts that target these constraints to increase PA may ultimately improve health.

Assessment of the impact of adjunctive proactive telephone counseling to promote smoking cessation among lung cancer patients' social networks.
Conclusion. Proactive telephone counseling focusing on adaptive coping skills was difficult to implement among smokers in lung cancer patients' social network. Although this study did not demonstrate any added benefit to cessation rates, this null finding may be a result of an intervention that was weaker than intended, owing to difficulties in completing the counseling phone calls. We discuss lessons learned and areas for future research in this special population.

The impact of social disadvantage on preconception health, illness, and well-being: an intersectional analysis.
Conclusion. African-American women's health and wellness behaviors are influenced by an experience of racism structurally embedded and made more virulent by its intersection with class, gender, and history. These intersecting forces create what may be a unique exposure that contributes significantly to the proximal determinants of health inequities for African-American women. Health promotion approaches that focus on the individual as the locus of intervention must concomitantly unravel and address the intertwining structural forces that shape individual circumstance in order to improve women's interconceptional health an...

Developing a culturally appropriate preconception health promotion strategy for newly immigrated latinos through a community-based program in South Carolina.
Abstract
Abstract Maternal and Child Health (MCH) experts emphasize the importance of preconception health (PCH) in achieving healthy pregnancies and positive birth outcomes. Research demonstrates that Latinas face significant PCH disparities, yet no comprehensive PCH promotion strategy exists to reach them. As a trusted community-based organization that uses culturally competent strategies to promote MCH in the Latino community, PASOs is well-positioned to address PCH among Latinos in South Carolina. With the input and support of Latino community members, PASOs is pioneering a PCH strategy using its successful mo...

[Measurement of the socioeconomic status within the German Health Update 2009 (GEDA)].
Abstract
The socioeconomic status (SES) is a central analytical concept for epidemiologic research and health reporting in Germany. Within the German Cardiovascular Prevention Study (GCP), a multidimensional aggregated index of SES has been developed, which is used to this date. We have revised this index critically and reworked it according to the necessities of German health monitoring at the Robert Koch Institute (RKI). The main changes involve the operationalization and categorization of the status-constituting dimensions education, occupation, and income as well as the categorization of the resulting socioecon...

[Evolution and infection biology of new influenza A viruses with pandemic potential].
Abstract
Wild aquatic birds are natural hosts for a large variety of influenza A viruses. Occasionally, viruses are transmitted from this reservoir to other species, such as chickens, pigs, and man, and may then cause devastating outbreaks in domestic poultry or give rise to human influenza pandemics. The H5N1-, H7N7-, H9N2-, and H2N2-viruses are considered to have high pandemic potential, because of their pathogenicity in humans and because of the lack of immune protection in the human population. However, the unexpected outbreak of the H1N1 pandemic in 2009 demonstrates that the reliability of such predictions is...

Abstract
For many years, the Working Group on Influenza (AGI) has been the most important influenza surveillance system in Germany. An average sample of the population is covered by both syndromic and virological surveillance, which provides timely data regarding the onset and course of the influenza wave as well as its burden of disease. However, smaller influenza outbreaks cannot be detected by the AGI sentinel system. This is achieved by the information reported by the mandatory notification system (Protection Against Infection Act, IfSG), which serves as the second pillar of the national influenza surveillance....
