Belshe talks goals for NIH post

Health care plays smaller role in State of the Union

New study: Less than half of Kentuckians have employer-sponsored insurance
The number of Kentucky adults between the ages of 18 and 64 who get health insurance from their employer or their spouse’s employer has plummeted in recent years, according to a new poll from the Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky.
The foundation’s Kentucky Health Issues Poll showed that fewer than 37 percent get their health insurance from an employer or spouse’s employer, down from 55 percent in 2008.

Flu season claims the lives of dozen San Antonio area residents
So far, there have been 12 flu-related deaths in Bexar County for the 2012-2013 flu season, including two children.
Although the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District reports influenza-like illness activity is now decreasing, hospitalizations and deaths in people 65 and older have been high for most of the season locally, and nationally.

Yesterday, the Florida Hospital Association released an economic impact report detailing how many jobs expanding Medicaid would create in Florida.

Moffitt named charitable sponsor for Innisbrook PGA tournament
Moffitt Cancer Center has been named the charitable sponsor for the Tampa Bay Golf Championship, a 2013 PGA Tour event in March at Innisbrook Resort’s Copperhead Course.

UC Davis Institute for Population offering grants to link rural areas with health poviders
The UC Davis Institute for Population Health Improvement, tapped to lead an initiative to link doctors, hospitals and emergency rooms statewide, is offering two grants totaling $1.3 million to support the effort.
Requests for proposals will be posted by Thursday; completed proposals are due Feb. 28.

Humana shares fall on Medicare proposal
Humana Inc. (NYSE: HUM) and other major health insurers saw shares fall sharply Tuesday after analysts said proposed Medicare Advantage rates for 2014 appear unfavorable.
According to The Wall Street Journal, Humana agrees with some analysts’ forecasts that rates would be flat to slightly down in 2014.
