β-Glucans in the treatment and prevention of allergic diseases.
Abstract
β-glucans are a group of biologically active polysaccharides of natural origin with a proven pleiotropic immunomodulation effect. Their efficacy has been confirmed in the therapeutic treatment and prevention of various infectious diseases, secondary immune defects and also of oncologic disorders. Allergic diseases are one of the most frequent diseases and their prevalence continues to increase. They develop as a consequence of dysregulation of the immune system, especially when there is failure in the equilibrium of the response of T(H)1/T(H)2 lymphocytes towards T(H)2. New therapeutic approaches in the t...

Correlation of Cell Membrane Lipid Profiles with Daptomycin Resistance in Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).
Abstract
We compared the CM lipid composition among nine well-characterized daptomycin-susceptible (DAP-S)/DAP-resistant (R) MRSA strain pairs. As compared to the 9 DAP-S parental strains, DAP-R strains (with or without mprF/yycFG mutations) exhibited: significantly reduced phosphatidylglycerol (PG) content, (P < 0.01), significantly increased total synthesis of lysyl-PG [LPG] (P < 0.01), and reduced carotenoid content (P < 0.05 for 5/9 strains). There were no significant changes in: LPG flipping, cardiolipin content or fatty acid composition among strain-pairs.

Long-Term Risk for Readmission, Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) Infection, and Death among MRSA-Colonized Veterans.
Conclusions: Among a cohort of VA patients, MRSA carriers are at high risk of infection-related readmission, MRSA infection and mortality compared to non-carriers. Non- carriers are at very low risk of subsequent MRSA infection. Future studies should address whether interventions such as nasal or skin decolonization could result in improved outcomes for MRSA carriers.

Accessory Gene Regulator (agr) Dysfunction in Staphylococcus aureus Bloodstream Isolates from Korean Patients.
We describe the genetic and microbiological characteristics of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) bloodstream isolates with agr dysfunction from a tertiary-care hospital in Korea. Of these, ST5-SCCmec type II-agr group II MRSA isolates, which are known to be prevalent in hospital-acquired infections in Korea, were the most abundant, due to clonal spread of a specific agr-defective lineage. This finding suggests that the loss of agr function may confer a potential advantage in a hospital setting. Clonal spread of a specific agr-defective strain was not observed among community-associated MRSA or methicillin-...

Risk factors and clinical phenotypes of Beijing genotype strains in tuberculosis patients in China
Conclusions:
In China, young age group, urban people, Hui ethnicity and the earlier treated patients are all high risk factors for infection with Beijing genotype strains, while Uyghur and Zhuang ethnicity are lower than average risk factors for infection. The high rate of chest symptoms occurring in non-Beijing genotype infected patients indicates that more attention should be paid to basic research on non-Beijing genotype strains.

Electrocardiographic study in Ghanaian children
with uncomplicated malaria, treated with
artesunate-amodiaquine or artemether-lumefantrine
An electrocardiographic study in Ghanaian children with uncomplicated malaria showed no significant changes in ECG except a bradycardia in the artesunate-amodiaquine group. It is difficult to attribute this change to anti-malarial treatment as patients had probably fever, intestinal disorders and/or ionic imbalance before treatment.

A rapid and scalable density gradient purification method for Plasmodium sporozoites
Purification of Plasmodium sporozoites is an important need, for all of the reasons presented by the authors, in particular the need for clean sporozoites for human immunization trials. It seems likely that the method described will be useful for biochemical, molecular biological and in vitro studies, especially as it permits in vitro studies of P. vivax hypnozoites.

Policy options for deploying anti-malarial drugs in endemic countries: a population genetics approach
In this modelling study, a policy of multiple first-line therapy (MFT) is compared with the conventional policy of sequential drug deployment. It shows that MFT outlasts sequential application providing drug usages are low to moderate, and appears not to drive widespread multi-drug resistance.

Willingness to treat infectious diseases: what do students think?
Discussion
Students’ greater willingness to treat as physicians is mostly attributed to perceptions of higher obligations as a qualified doctor. There is greater but not total willingness to perform resuscitation on patients with HIV relative to other diseases. The increased willingness of preclinical students and the decreased willingness of clinical students both emphasise the importance of patient–physician communication and ethics studies during medical school.

Curbside Consultation in Uveitis: 49 Clinical Questions
Media Type: Textbook/Monograph Synopsis: The care of uveitis patients may be complex and daunting in some circumstances, particularly given the risk of “missing” an infectious disease with potentially vision-threatening consequences. While there are a number of excellent, comprehensive textbooks that address detailed pathogenesis, immunologic principles within uveitis, and mechanisms underlying uveitis and treatment options, some situations invariably arise where a “curbside” is needed – a 5-minute answer to a complex situation in “real-time.” Curbside Consultation in Uveitis fills this niche in the literatu...

Prevalence and antimicrobial susceptibility of Salmonella in European wild boar (Sus scrofa); Latium Region - Italy.
Abstract
The prevalence of Salmonella spp. infection was determined in 499 wild boars harvested during the 2010-2011 and 2011-2012 hunting seasons in the Latium Region of Italy. We conducted a microbiological assessment on faeces collected at slaughter and we examined serum samples for the presence of antibodies to Salmonella spp. by ELISA assay. Out of 383 serum samples examined, 255 (66.5%) were positive for Salmonella spp. antibodies. Overall, 10.8% (54/499) of the animals were positive by microbiological assessment. The Salmonellae most frequently isolated were S. enterica subsp. salamae II (24%), S. enterica s...

Malaria parasite diversity and transmission intensity affect development of parasitological immunity in a mathematical model
This paper aims to identify how parasite diversity, transmission intensity and naturally acquired immunity contribute to the age-specific parasite prevalence curves observed in malaria-endemic areas. The author finds that increasing parasite diversity delays the development of naturally acquired immunity.

An analysis of health system resources in relation to pandemic response capacity in the Greater Mekong Subregion
Conclusions:
There is considerable heterogeneity in healthcare resource distribution within and across countries of the GMS. Most inequalities result from within countries. Given the inequalities, mismatches and clustering of resources observed here, resource sharing and mobilization in a pandemic scenario could be crucial for more effective and equitable use of the resources that are available in the GMS.

What is the Role of Respiratory Viruses in Community-Acquired Pneumonia? What is the Best Therapy for Influenza and Other Viral Causes of Community-Acquired Pneumonia?
Respiratory viruses have long been appreciated as a cause of community acquired pneumonia (CAP), particularly among children, people with serious medical comorbidities, and military recruits. They are increasingly recognized as a cause of CAP among adults. Polymerase chain reaction–based testing has allowed detection of newer agents and improved the ability to detect such viral infections as influenza virus and rhinovirus. Coinfection with viruses and bacteria is common and it remains challenging to determine which patients have only viral infection as the cause of CAP. Better ways to diagnose viral CAP and to integrate ...
