Hydrogen Peroxide Vapor Enhances Hospital Disinfection Of Superbugs
Infection control experts at The Johns Hopkins Hospital have found that a combination of robot-like devices that disperse a bleaching agent into the air and then detoxify the disinfecting chemical are highly effective at killing and preventing the spread of multiple-drug-resistant bacteria, or so-called hospital superbugs. A study report on the use of hydrogen peroxide vaporizers -- first deployed in several Singapore hospitals during the 2002 outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome, or SARS, and later stocked by several U.S...

Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae: a review of treatment and outcomes
Abstract: The emergence of carbapenem resistance in Enterobacteriaceae is an important threat to global health. Reported outcomes of infections with carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) are poor. Very few options remain for the treatment of these virulent organisms. Antibiotics which are currently in use to treat CRE infections include aminoglycosides, polymyxins, tigecycline, fosfomycin, and temocillin. In addition, the role of combination therapy, including carbapenem containing regimens, remains to be defined. There are several important concerns regarding all of these treatment options such as limited efficacy...

Leptospirosis in New Orleans.
Abstract
ABSTRACT:: Leptospirosis is an unusual but reemerging zoonotic infectious disease in the United States where the diagnosis may not be suspected when patients initially present. The case report of a patient from New Orleans who presented with jaundice, hypotension and acute kidney injury is presented. In this patient, a broad differential diagnosis was considered on presentation and serologic testing for leptospirosis eventually confirmed the diagnosis. A review of the clinical manifestations, diagnostic studies and treatment are discussed so that leptospirosis will be considered more carefully in the initi...

Microbial contamination of single- and multiple-dose vials after opening in a pulmonary teaching hospital.
CONCLUSIONS: Our data demonstrate that repeated use of vials especially if basic sterility measures are disobeyed can cause microbial contamination of administered products to the patients. Description and analysis of the cattle trade network in the Madagascar highlands: potential role in the diffusion of Rift Valley fever virus.
The objective of this study was to describe the cattle trade network of the area and analyse the link between network structure and RVFV circulation. Five hundred and sixteen animals that tested negative in 2009 were sampled again in 2010. The 2009-2010 cattle-level seroconversion rate was estimated at 7% (95% CI: 5-10%). Trade data from 386 breeders of 48 villages were collected and analysed using social network analysis methodology, nodes being villages and ties being any movements of cattle connecting villages. The specific practice of cattle barter, known as kapsile, that involves frequent contacts between cattle of tw...

Opsoclonus in scrub typhus
We present a case of scrub typhus with a rare ophthalmic manifestation. Our patient presented with fever and opsoclonus, was diagnosed to have scrub typhus and completely improved upon treatment. Opsoclonus complicates various medical diseases, including viral infections, toxin, encephalitis, brain tumors, and paraneoplastic syndromes. There has been only one previously reported case of opsoclonus in scrub typhus. This phenomenon highlights the increasingly complex presentation of common diseases. It also indicates there is much to be discovered about the immunopathogenesis of this infectious disease.

Study Examines Bone Mineral Density in Children and Adolescents with Perinatal HIV Infection
The objective of the study is to] estimate prevalence of low bone mineral density (BMD) in perinatally HIV-infected (HIV+) and HIV-exposed but uninfected (HEU) children, and to determine predictors of BMD in HIV+. … 350 HIV+ and 160 HEU were enrolled. Mean age was 12.6 and 10.7 years for HIV+ and HEU, respectively. Most (87%) HIV+ were receiving HAART. More HIV+ than HEU had total body and lumbar spine Z-scores less than -2.0 (total body: 7 vs. 1%, P=0.008; lumbar spine: 4 vs. 1%, P=0.08). Average differences in Z-scores between HIV+ and HEU were attenuated after height and/or weight adjustment. Among HIV+, total bo...

“The U.S. Food and Drug Administration … approved Fulyzaq (crofelemer) to relieve symptoms of diarrhea in HIV/AIDS patients taking antiretroviral therapy, a combination of medicines used to treat HIV infection.
“Diarrhea is experienced by many HIV/AIDS patients and is a common reason why patients discontinue or switch their antiretroviral therapies. Fulyzaq is intended to be used in HIV/AIDS patients whose diarrhea is not caused by an infection from a virus, bacteria, or parasite. Patients take Fulyzaq two times a day to manage watery diarrhea due to the secretion of electrolytes and water in the gastro...

Delivering the promise of public health genomics
Can genomics help developing countries face their growing burden of disease?Since the completion of the human genome project in 2003, scientific activities that were unheard-of a decade ago, such as sequencing the genes of a newly emerging virus in days, the ability to screen for inherited diseases and the potential for personalised medicine have all become a part of public health landscape.Genomics is often associated with the detection of single gene disorders, such as thalassemia and sickle cell anaemia. Momentum is growing for developing countries to harness such technology, but the utility of genomic research is far w...

Fifty‐two skippers (mean age: 41 years) completed a questionnaire; 39 (75 %) had a simple sunburn over the last 6 months and 3 (6%) severe sunburn; 54 (64%) declared achieving sun protection by wearing clothes during >90% of the day. Only 17% had used sun protection >90% of the time.

Variable geographic distribution of Blastocystis subtypes and its potential implications.
In this study, we determined the prevalence of Blastocystis STs in populations from Libya, Liberia and Nigeria, as well as expanding the dataset available for the UK. A total of 356 Blastocystis STs were identified in this study, 271 from the UK, 38 from Libya, 25 from Liberia and 22 from Nigeria. SSU rRNA gene sequences revealed the presence of eight of the nine STs known from humans but at varying frequencies between countries. ST1 was the most common ST in Libya and Nigeria whereas ST3 showed the highest frequency in the other two countries, as indeed is the case in most populations around the world. ST4 was absent in L...

A new system for parallel drug screening against multiple-resistant HIV mutants based on lentiviral self-inactivating (SIN) vectors and multi-colour analyses.
CONCLUSIONS: The technology developed here facilitates fast screening for anti-HIV activity of individual agents from large compound libraries. Although drugs targeting gag-pol variants were used here, our approach permits screening compounds that target several different, key cellular and viral functions of the HIV life-cycle. The modular principle of the method also allows the easy exchange of various mutations in HIV sequences. In conclusion, the methodology presented here provides a valuable new approach for the identification of novel anti-HIV drugs.

Intrapatient emergence of OXA‐247: a novel carbapenemase found in a patient previously infected with OXA‐163‐producing Klebsiella pneumoniae
Abstract
Two genetically related Klebsiella pneumoniae strains carrying OXA‐type carbapenemases were isolated from a single patient one month apart. Kpn163 harbored OXA‐163 and Kpn247 a new variant named OXA‐247 that showed susceptibility to carbapenems and expanded‐spectrum cephalosporins similar to OXA‐48. Our epidemiological, biochemical and molecular results suggest the intrapatient emergence of blaOXA‐247 from blaOXA‐163.
Carbapenem‐hydrolyzing class D β‐lactamases (CHDLs) hydrolyze carbapenems at low levels but do not have activity against extended‐spectrum cephalosporins (ESCs) and aztreonam, wh...
