FDA: Chantix May Raise Heart Risks

Dec. 14, 2012 — Smokers who take Chantix to stop smoking may be at higher risk for heart attacks and strokes compared to those who don’t take the drug, the FDA says. But the increased risk is small and should be weighed against the risks of continuing to smoke.
Chantix is the top-selling smoking cessation drug in the U.S., according to IMS Health. It works by blocking the effect of nicotine in the brain. Studies have shown that about 20% of people who take Chantix quit smoking long-term compared to 10% of those who take placebos.

ONC Finalizes 2014 Test Methods for EHR Certification
“The Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT has finalized and formally approved the 2014 Edition Test Method for Electronic Health Record Certification following a comprehensive public review and comment process.

Commentary: What about interoperability?
The recommendations for Stage 3 of meaningful use are now out for comment. Coincidentally or not, there is a new degree of pessimism about when health IT interoperability will ever be achieved. The issue of progress, or relative lack thereof, on interoperability surfaced just before the election with members from both houses of Congress questioning whether HITECH funding of electronic medical records should be continued without interoperability standards or more rigorous meaningful use requirements in place.

NQF names new president
The National Quality Forum board of directors has unanimously named Christine K. Cassel as its new president and chief executive officer. Cassel will begin her position at NQF effective mid-summer 2013, according to an NQF statement made Dec. 17.
"NQF is deeply fortunate to have Dr. Cassel join us as our new leader," said William Roper, MD, Dean of University of North Carolina School of Medicine, vice chancellor for medical affairs, chief executive officer of UNC Health Care System and chair of the NQF Board of Directors.

New NHS planning guidance puts patient first
Many newspapers are reporting new planning guidance for the NHS released by the NHS Commissioning Board, which it says will "drive a revolution for patients…giving them greater control of their health."

Obama firm on medical device tax
President Barack Obama rejected the idea of delaying the implementation of a 2.3 percent medical device tax slated to go into effect on Jan. 1, 2013 as part of the Affordable Care Act. Half of states go with government HIX
With the Dec. 14 deadline on health insurance exchanges, states were required to provide a blueprint of their plans to the Department of Health and Human Services for how they will create their state-based health insurance exchanges.About half of the states have decided to surrender control to the federal government to build an exchange for them.
HHS has set deadlines for stages in the development of the online marketplaces to be sure that states will be ready to offer enrollment in health coverage starting in October 2013 and be operational Jan.1, 2014.
