Nursing informatics programs gaining ground
Hoping to fill a projected gap of some 50,000 healthcare IT professionals in the next several years, the Office of the National Coordinator’s Health IT Workforce Development Program is funding community college programs that can train IT professionals in healthcare and train healthcare professionals, like nurses, in IT. The Bureau of Labor Statistics is also projecting a 20 percent increase in demand for registered nurses during the next decade, and amid increased enrollment in nursing schools, nursing informatics is growing as part of the curriculum. read more

Center for Connected Health gets McKesson grant for mobile cancer program
The Center for Connected Health, a division of Partners HealthCare has been awarded a research grant from the McKesson Foundation to develop a text messaging and voice response program to improve pain management in cancer patients. The research will focus on improving clinical outcomes in pain management and decreasing hospitalization, officials say. The McKesson Foundation's Mobilizing for Health initiative seeks to improve health outcomes among underserved patients with chronic diseases using mHealth technologies with a track record of success. read more

Florida man pleads guilty to patient data theft
A Florida man pleaded guilty Monday to federal charges of illegally accessing the private health information of some 12,000 patients, as reported by the Tampa Bay Business Journal. The article reported that Dale Munroe II, 35, was accused of stealing health information of patients who were involved in auto accidents in attempts to refer them to lawyers or chiropractors. read more
