New HHS rule targets HIPAA, standardization the goal
HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced Friday a final rule establishing a health plan identifier (HPID), that officials say will boost standardization within HIPAA transactions and increase the efficiency of health billing processes.
The final rule, established by the Office of E-Health Standards and Services (OESS), also includes a data element that functions as an “other identity” identifier (OEID), which is designated for non-health related entities or individuals that still need to be identified for standard transactions.

Trade associations require time to implement Sunshine Act

EHRs produce too many false positives in medication adherence program
Even in an integrated system, EHRs are not able to efficiently screen patients who may be candidates for medication adherence outreach. Researchers affiliated with the University of Minnesota School of Medicine in Minneapolis and the Department of Veterans Affairs used EHRs to identify patients due for statin resupplies, but only one-fifth of the patients identified were appropriate for efforts to reinstate long-term statin use, according to a study published in the July issue of the American Journal of Managed Care.

Final rules for Stage 2 meaningful use released
The federal government released the final rules for Stage 2 of meaningful use on Aug. 23, with federal officials’ assurance that the public’s voice was heard. The rule is set to become effective for participants in the program no earlier than 2014.
Farzad Mostashari, MD, national coordinator for health IT said the Stage 2 rules will step up interoperability, but regulators did their best to employ “maximum flexibility” to reduce the regulatory burden, he told reporters on a press call.

8 states receive grants for insurance exchanges
California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Iowa, Maryland, Nevada, New York, and Vermont have received new grants to help them build health insurance exchanges, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced on Thursday.
Government officials see the exchanges as providing consumers and small businesses with access to high-quality, affordable health insurance via an online marketplace where consumers can choose a private health insurance plan that fits their health needs and, Sebelius noted, have the same kinds of insurance choices as members of Congress.

Providence VA Medical Center opens simulation training facility
Providence VA Medical Center has opened a simulation center, powered by technology from Exton, Pa.-based Education Management Solutions, which will enable instructors to practice and train for invasive procedures, emergency care and more, tracking progress along the way.

Walgreens poised to expand EHR to 8,000 locations
Walgreens, the nation’s largest drugstore chain, announced Wednesday the company is poised to expand its electronic health record (EHR) solution to some 8,000 locations by the end of summer 2013.
Officials say expanding the EHR solution – currently deployed in upwards of 200 stores nationwide – is an effort to integrate the drugstore’s healthcare services further, specifically for immunizations and health testing.
