New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson has appointed the New Mexico Health Information Collaborative the state's official health information exchange.
"New Mexico is a leader in the use of health information technology, and HIE is key to our success," said Richardson. "The New Mexico Health Information Collaborative has already built a solid foundation during the last several years, thus making it an ideal choice to help move us closer to the goal of quality healthcare for all at affordable prices."

St. Joseph's/Candler Health System in Savannah, Ga., is rolling out Web-based technology to track infections. The technology, called SafetySurveillor, was developed by the Premier healthcare alliance.
According to officials of ther San Diego-based alliance, more than 270 hospitals employ SafetySurveillor to help prevent healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). The goal is to keep patients safe while also reducing hospital costs.

Pharmacists have been included in legislation intended to help small medical practices adopt healthcare information technology.
The Small Business Health Information Technology Financing Act, an amendment introduced by House Subcommittee Chairwoman Kathy Dahlkemper (D-Pa.), makes provisions for state-licensed pharmacists and other healthcare providers to use a lending program for health IT. The program would provide reduced-cost loans guaranteed up to 90 percent, with a subsidized deferment period of up to three years.

From today GPs will be receiving deliveries of the Pandemrix vaccine and will begin contacting 'at risk' groups for Swine Flu vaccination appointments. It was recently reported that there are fears that the backlog of post following the current Royal Mail strikes will affect the programme, resulting in 'at risk' groups missing their appointments and therefore delaying getting their vaccination.

Carroll Hospital Center in Westminster, Md., has implemented software aimed at streamlining operations and reducing costs.
The hospital tapped St. Paul, Minn.-based Lawson Software for its enterprise financial management and asset management suites as well as Lawson Business Intelligence.
The hospital is also using Lawson's human resource management suite, including employee and manager self-service, payroll, budgeting and planning and the ProcessFlow Integrator.

Rhode Island Gov. Donald L. Carcieri is slated to announce this morning that his state has launched a new system for tracking swine flu. The system makes use of prescribing data provided by pharmacies throughout the state via a secure electronic link.
The announcement is slated for 10 a.m. at a news conference in Warwick, R.I.
Officials will also announce that all of the state's retail pharmacies are connected for e-prescribing via the Surescripts network.

The federal Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology has released “requests for proposals” to all 50 states to apply for federal grants worth $1.2 billion.
With the grants, individual states are expected to take a more active role in healthcare reform, said Robert Wah, chief medical officer of Falls Church, Va.-based CSC, an information technology company. The government wants states and the private sector to be more involved with the reform process to help reduce health IT implementation time and healthcare costs.

In an effort to combat counterfeit medicines, the European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations has launched a medicine coding pilot project with Siemens IT Solutions and Services in Sweden.
The aim of the project is to introduce a standardized coding and identification solution for the pharmaceutical sector in Europe that is compliant with existing international and European standards. If the project is successful, the EFPIA will present it to European Union authorities for replication in other EU countries.

Siemens Healthcare has signed a seven-year, $135 million contract with the University of Pennsylvania Health System to provide integrated service management solutions.
