The Health IT Standards Committee Tuesday endorsed a set of security and privacy standards for electronic health record systems that it said would get progressively tougher without holding back wider health information sharing.
The committee's security and privacy workgroup clarified requirements that electronic health record systems must meet so both vendors and healthcare providers could use a number of access controls in their electronic health record systems and practices by 2011.

A recent transcation Down Under could mean a big boost for a hospital IT firm looking to position itself as a patient billing solutions leader.
PowerHealth Solutions bought Web Alliance, the Australian IT company that owned the Platypus 2 patient biliing system, for an undisclosed sum. The move improves PowerHealth's bid to become the recognized leader in the patient billing market, PowerHealth's management said.

They were gathered at the 2009 Annual Conference of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, held Sept. 13-16 in Washington D.C..

He knows he got his point across, he said Wednesday morning.
Fortuna, chairman-elect of the healthcare division of the American Society of Quality, spoke to the 21st Century Health Care Caucus of the U.S. House of Representatives.
Congressmen Patrick Kennedy (D-R.I.) and Tim Murphy (R-Pa.) co-chair the caucus, which is made up of 47 House members.

IASIS Healthcare has implemented a new single-sign solution that is expected to improve health data access for providers.
The Franklin, Tenn.-based organization has already rolled out Sentillion's SSO access management solution to seven of its 15 acute care facilities in Arizona, Florida, Louisiana, Nevada, Texas and Utah and will be continuing with an enterprise-wide implementation.
By enabling better access to clinical data, IASIS officials say doctors to be able to make more informed decisions, raising the quality of care at the facilities.

Researchers are developing technologies that use lasers to create arterial stents and longer-lasting medical implants that could be manufactured 10 times faster and also less expensively than is now possible. The nursing shortage has decreased time with patients and quality of patient care, according to a recent survey of nurses conducted by a mobile device application vendor.
The 217 nurses across the country who responded to the survey said the shortage has also increased their responsibility, patient load and number of work hours.
"Nurses are on the frontline of patient care and are continually asked to do more with the nursing shortage," said Michelle Snyder, senior vice president of subscriber business for Epocrates, which sponsored the survey.

In light of a growing economy, Ghana’s healthcare sector has seen a high demand for medical imaging technology.
A new study from Frost & Sullivan found that in 2008, healthcare sector revenues reached $50 million in the African nation. The report projects that by 2015, that number will almost triple, to approximately $135.8 million. athenahealth, Inc., a provider of Web-based business services to physician practices, has launched a new program designed to incentivize the use of its EHR system through the federal stimulus plan.
The Watertown, Mass.-based company is guaranteeing that users of the athenaClinicals EHR will receive a HITECH Act bonus payment under the 2011 program year.

Standards panel gets into nitty-gritty of quality reporting

The heads of the federal Health IT Standards Committee, Jonathan Perlin and John Halamka, moved the panel at its meeting this morning to the next phase of work – guidance for implementation.
In a nod to the work the panel had already accomplished, Perlin, of the Hospital Corporation of America, thanked those who had felt a "heavy lift." But, he warned, the work done so far is merely "the end of the beginning."
The committee will now move to the next – and more difficult – phase.
Perlin called it "a change in tenor."

Safety net system may reduce preventable patient deaths

Hospitals using a patient monitoring system developed by Masimo are reporting a decrease in preventable patient deaths and injuries.
The Irvine, Calif.-based company's Patient SafetyNet is designed to reduce the percentage of patient deaths and injuries incurred in the hospital due to inefficient or lack of medical care. The system combines remote monitoring and clinical notification capabilities to allow for noninvasive supervision of patients at a healthcare facility.
