Developed by Toumaz Technology, a UK-based provider of wireless body monitoring solutions, the Life Pebble is designed to continuously monitor common vital signs – including ECG, heart rate, skin temperature and physical activity. The data is streamed over a short-range wireless link to a Sensium USB Network Adapter.

Health information technology is the fastest growing segment of the $1 trillion global healthcare marketplace, and the "impressive" 11 percent combined annual growth rate is likely to continue through 2013, according to a Scientia Advisors global review released Tuesday.
According to Scientia, a global management advisory firm with offices in Cambridge, Mass., and Palo Alto, Calif., healthcare IT sales will grow by 25 percent, from 4 percent to 5 percent of the worldwide healthcare market, by 2013.

Sarasota Memorial Health Care System officials say an iPhone platform at one hospital has helped give nurses more time with patients, increasing patient and nurse satisfaction.
The 806-bed Sarasota Memorial Hospital, Florida's second largest acute care public hospital, began using iPhones this summer. Nurses could send and receive text messages, make voice calls and receive critical care alarms, providing faster response to patient needs, hospital executives said.

HealthConnect, Kaiser Permanente's electronic health record system, is at the core of a new osteoporosis prevention program that officials say could drop the nation's hip fracture rate by 25 percent.
The Kaiser initiative will use HealthConnect – dubbed the world's largest civilian electronic health record database – to collect data on patients that included anti-osteoporosis medication use, bone density scans and fragility fractures.

The Medical Group Management Association, which represents nearly 14,000 large and small physician practices across the country, is giving kudos to information technology components of the health reform bill passed Saturday by the House.
The Affordable Health Care for America Act (H.R. 3962) passed by a vote of 220 to 215. The Senate now must vote on its own health reform bill. If that bill passes, both chambers would work to forge one bill for a vote by the full Congress.
