Research is needed to further validate and operationalize key performance indicators, to provide an IT benchmarking framework, and to provide open repositories for a comparison of the HIS benchmarks of different hospitals.

Conclusions: Using a model-based comparison, it was possible to detect remarkable differences between the observed hospital information systems of completely different cultural areas. However, the usability of 3LGM(2) models for comparisons has to be improved in order to apply key figures and to assess or benchmark the structural quality of health information systems architectures more thoroughly.

Conclusions: Despite the many benefits, PDA usage at the point-of-care comes with the increased risk of distractions for physicians and can cause a negative patient experience. Designers of point-of-care systems need to be aware of, and address, the problems with handhelds and learn from the attributes and access capabilities of paper charts.

Conclusions: Our rates of missed test results are lower than those reported from studies where paper ordering and reporting systems were used. This suggests that the availability of CPOE systems may reduce the risk of these events. Electronic result delivery, with electronic endorsement to allow documentation of follow-up of test results, may provide additional efficiency benefits and further reduce the risk of test results which are not followed up.

Physicians have limited knowledge of the American Recovery and Reinvestment provisions, according to a recent online survey of 1,001 physicians, and they are still reluctant to adopt information technology.
Ingenix, a healthcare IT company and consulting firm, is under the umbrella of UnitedHealth Group, conducted the survey.
While financial incentives and penalties drive physicians to adopt health IT, the survey showed, they continue to be worried about upfront cost and workflow disruption.

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) is a major contributor in the spike in CIO recruitments at hospitals and healthcare systems, according to a national executive search expert.
"ARRA's requirements for the incentives are bringing it (the importance of the CIO position) to the forefront of hospital boards and administrations," said Linda Hodges, vice president of health information technology practice leader for Witt/Kieffer. "We've seen more searches for CIOs in the healthcare industry now than in the last 15 years."

CareSpark began a health information exchange covering 17 counties in the Tri-Cities Tennessee and Virginia area in November 2008 to improve the health of its residents.
As a mature HIE, CareSpark has a lot to offer emerging HIE efforts, said executive director Liesa Jenkins.

California is expected to choose soon which organization will be the state-designated entity tasked to create a statewide health information exchange (HIE) with ARRA funding.
The California eHealth Collaborative (CAeHC), one of the two organizations on the short list, believes it's in the best position to deliver connectivity for a state that large.

The inclusion of funding for health information exchanges (HIEs) through ARRA’s HITECH Act is a “once in a generation” opportunity, the HIMSS VCE opening keynote speaker said.
“There are no second chances,” John Kansky, vice president for Business Development for the Indiana Health Information Exchange (IHIE), emphasized. “Be careful with what you do with the money.”
