A group of healthcare and consumer organizations and companies has released five policy recommendations designed to promote better medication adherence, and one of them is use of information technology. The group, which includes the American College of Cardiology, GlaxoSmithKline, the National Association of Chain Drug Stores, the National Consumers League and the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America, says improved adherence will improve patient outcomes and save as much as $300 billion in healthcare costs.

The Chesapeake Regional Information System for Patients (CRISP) will select the technology vendors by the end of the year to help it build Maryland's statewide health information exchange (HIE). With a quarter-million-dollar grant awarded from the Maryland Health Care Commission (MHCC) and the Maryland Health Services Cost Review Commission (HSCRC) three years ago, CRISP helped create a roadmap for designing and building a statewide HIE. In September CRISP was awarded $10 million through an adjustment in hospital reimbursement rates to see that vision become a reality.

A public demonstration of "Hakeem," Jordan's National E-Health Program, was made at the Prince Hamzah Hospital on Tuesday. The demonstration, part of the nation's pilot healthcare transformation program that was announced in December 2008, showcased the hospital's use of its VistA open source clinical and healthcare information management system and computerized patient record system (CPRS). Hakeem is managed by the Jordanian non-profit Electronic Health Solutions, with technology implementation and integration provided by Plano, Texas-based Perot Systems.
