Lipocalin‐2 negatively modulates the EMT in hepatocellular carcinoma through the EGF (TGF‐beta1)/Lcn2/Twist1 pathway
Conclusions: Together, our findings indicate that Lcn2 can negatively modulate the EMT in HCC cells through an EGF (or TGF‐β1)/Lcn2/Twist1 pathway. Thus, Lcn2 may be a candidate metastasis suppressor and a potential therapeutic target in HCC. (HEPATOLOGY 2013.) (Source: Hepatology)

Vitamin D nuclear receptor deficiency promotes cholestatic liver injury by disruption of biliary epithelial cell junctions in mice
Conclusion: Biliary‐type liver injury is exacerbated in Vdr‐/‐mice by limited adaptive response and increased bile duct rupture. These results indicate that loss of VDR restricts the adaptation to cholestasis and diminishes bile duct integrity in the setting of biliary‐type liver injury. (HEPATOLOGY2013.) (Source: Hepatology)

Donor risk index for african american liver transplant recipients with hepatitis C virus
Abstract African‐American (AA) liver transplant (LT) recipients with hepatitis C virus (HCV) have higher rates of graft loss than other racial/ethnic groups. The Donor Risk Index (DRI) predicts graft loss but is neither race nor disease‐specific and may not be optimal for assessing donor risk for AA HCV‐positive LT recipients. We developed a DRI for AA with HCV with the goal of enhancing graft loss predictions. All U.S. HCV‐positive adult AA first deceased donor LTs surviving ≥30 days from 3/2002 to 12/2009 were included. A total of 1766 AA LT recipients were followed for median 2.8 (IQR 1.3‐4.9) years. Indepen...

Intrapulmonary shunt confirmed by intracardic echocardiography in the diagnosis of hepatopulmonary syndrome
We describe the case of a 59‐year‐old man with cirrhosis and hypoxemia whose clinical picture was suspicious for hepatopulmonary syndrome. A transthoracic echocardiogram saline contrast bubble study was unable to decipher between intracardiac and intrapulmonary shunting. Transesophageal echocardiogram could not be done due to esophageal varices. The presence of intrapulmonary shunting was proven by right heart catheterization with direct injection of agitated saline into the pulmonary artery. Bubbles were detected entering the left atrium by intracardiac echocardiogram, thus confirming the diagnosis of hepatopulmonary ...

Longitudinal comparison between MRI, MRS and histology‐determined steatosis in NAFLD patients at two‐time points in a randomized trial

Therefore, it may be used to quantify changes in liver fat in future clinical trials. (HEPATOLOGY 2013.) (Source: Hepatology)

Disease-modifying factors in hereditary angioedema: an RNA expression-based screening
Conclusion: We found no evidence for a common altered PBMC expression pattern linked to HAE symptoms in the three families analyzed. All the data considered, differential gene expression in PBMCs do not seem to play a significant role in the predisposition or protection against HAE in the basal -between crises- conditions analyzed. Although the RNA expression pattern associated to the response to viral infections observed in the DR family supports the idea of infectious diseases as a modifying factor for HAE severity, large-scale studies would be needed to statistically associate such expression pattern to the development ...

Invariant NKT cell activation induces neutrophil accumulation and hepatitis: Oppositely regulated by IL‐4 and IFN‐γ
Conclusions: Our results propose a model in which activated iNKT cells rapidly release IL‐4, which promotes neutrophil survival and hepatitis but also sequentially produce IFN‐γ, which acts in a negative feedback loop to ameliorate iNKT hepatitis by inducing neutrophil apoptosis. Thus, modification of iNKT production of IL‐4 and IFN‐γ may have the potential to improve the efficacy of α‐Galcer in the treatment of liver disease. (HEPATOLOGY 2013.) (Source: Hepatology)

Therapeutic advantage of anti‐vascular adhesion protein‐1 over anti‐α4 integrin antibody in concanavalin a‐induced hepatitis
Conclusions: Our findings show that VAP‐1 and α4 integrin have opposing effects in the Con A‐induced hepatic injury, which is associated with blocking the recruitment of CD4 lymphocytes and monocytic MDSCs, respectively. The receptor TGR5 protects the liver from bile acid overload during liver regeneration in mice
Conclusion. TGR5 is crucial for liver protection against BA overload after PH, primarily through the control of bile hydrophobicity and cytokine secretion. In the absence of TGR5, intrahepatic stasis of abnormally hydrophobic bile and excessive inflammation, in association with impaired bile flow adaptation and deficient urinary BA efflux, lead to BA overload‐induced liver injury and delayed regeneration. Personalized medicine in psychiatry: problems and promises
The central theme of personalized medicine is the premise that an individual's unique physiologic characteristics play a significant role in both disease vulnerability and in response to specific therapies. The major goals of personalized medicine are therefore to predict an individual's susceptibility to developing an illness, achieve accurate diagnosis, and optimize the most efficient and favorable response to treatment. The goal of achieving personalized medicine in psychiatry is a laudable one, because its attainment should be associated with a marked reduction in morbidity and mortality. In this review, we summarize a...

Neuromuscular ultrasound in common entrapment neuropathies
Abstract Neuromuscular ultrasound involves the use of high‐resolution ultrasound to image the peripheral nervous system of patients with suspected neuromuscular diseases. It complements electrodiagnostic studies well by providing anatomic information regarding nerves, muscles, vessels, tendons, ligaments, bones, and other structures that cannot be obtained with nerve conduction studies and electromyography. Neuromuscular ultrasound has been studied closely over the past 10 years and has been used most often in the assessment of entrapment neuropathies. This review focuses on the use of neuromuscular ultrasound in 4 of th...

Dandy-Walker malformation and Wisconsin syndrome: novel cases add further insight into the genotype-phenotype correlations of 3q23q25 deletions
Conclusions: Our data indicate that the 3q deletion is a rare defect associated with DWM, and suggest that the hemizygosity of ZIC1-ZIC4 genes is neither necessary nor sufficient per se to cause this condition. A combination of mutations in AKR1D1 and SKIV2L in a family with severe infantile liver disease
Infantile cholestatic diseases can be caused by mutations in a number of genes involved in different hepatocyte molecular pathways. Whilst some of the essential pathways have a well understood function, such as bile biosynthesis and transport, the role of the others is not known. Here we report the findings of a clinical, biochemical and molecular study of a family with three patients affected with a severe infantile cholestatic disease. A novel homozygous frameshift germline mutation (c.587delG) in the AKR1D1 gene; which encodes the enzyme Δ 4-3-oxosteroid 5β–reductase that is required for synthesis of primary bile ac...

Impact of behaviour and lifestyle on bladder health
Bladder conditions, including UTI, UI, and bladder cancer, are highly prevalent and affect a wide range of populations. There are a variety of modifiable behavioral and lifestyle factors that influence bladder health. Some factors, such as smoking and obesity, increase the risk or severity of bladder conditions, whereas other factors, such as pelvic floor muscle exercise, are protective. Although clinical practice may be assumed to be the most appropriate ground for education on behavioral and lifestyle factors that influence bladder health, it is also crucial to extend these messages into the general population through pu...
