Recombinant DNA Advisory Committee (RAC) September 2010 - Day 3
The RAC is a technical committee whose goal is to consider the current state of knowledge and technology regarding recombinant DNA. This includes review of human gene transfer trials, and an assessment of the ability of DNA recombinants to survive in nature and the potential for transfer of genetic material to other organisms. It also considers hypothetical hazards and methods for monitoring and minimizing risks. Approximately one-third of the 15 members do not have scientific expertise but represent public interests and attitudes. This balance is intended to provide a forum for open public debate of social and scientific ...

VA and CTSA Opportunities for Collaborative Clinical and Translational Science: Enhancing Clinical Phenotyping
A common goal of translational science is better understanding of disease susceptibilities and mechanisms. Evolving approaches that take advantage of electronic health records, biorepositories and genotyping will create new opportunities for clinical phenotyping. Meeting presentations will describe resources such as a central institutional review board (IRB), informatics and the clinical research pharmacy that the Veterans Health Administration has put in place to support data-intensive studies. Opportunities for enhanced collaboration among Department of Veterans Affairs and NIH's Clinical and Translational Awards (CTS...

ALS-associated structural perturbation of Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase and strategies for protein stabilization
NIH Proteomics Interest Group Seminar Series Mutations in the gene encoding Cu/Zn-Superoxide dismutase (SOD1) cause a subset of familial ALS (fALS), through an unknown toxic mechanism. We performed H/D exchange on 13 ALS-associated SOD1 variants and have identified structural defects shared by every fALS SOD1 variant tested. A longstanding question is whether post-translational modifications of wild-type SOD1 could cause sporadic ALS. Using SOD1 purified from human nervous tissue we identified post-translational modifications that affect protein structure to a greater extent than some mutations. We designed secondary "res...

Reparative and Regenerative Medicine: A Surgeon's Perspective
Dr. Longaker is a pediatric craniofacial surgeon at the Stanford University School of Medicine. His research focuses on the development of new approaches for restoring craniofacial form and function using a combination of stem cell- and bioengineering-based technologies. He will present early clinical data on a new device he and his colleagues developed that helps build healthy tissue while optimizing wound healing and minimizing scarring. Dr. Longaker will also speak about their efforts to use stem cells derived from a patient’s own adipose tissue for “bedside tissue engineering.” Such a strategy would involve har...
