Reprogramming Blood Cell Lineages
NCRM (NIH Center for Regenerative Medicine) Lecture
Thomas Graf became interested in the effects of genes on differentiation early on in his career. Originally a virologist, he co-discovered several avian acute leukemia oncogenes (myc, myb and erb) and developed in vitro cell transformation systems that exhibited the same lineage specificity as in the animal. He showed that a differentiation block is an essential feature of leukemogenesis and that at least two oncogenes need to cooperate to cause acute leukemia. Using a surrogate adult stem cell system, which he developed with leukemic avian cells, he was able to reprogr...

Recombinant DNA Advisory Committee (RAC) September 2010 - Day 1
The RAC is a technical committee whose goal is to consider the current state of knowledge and technology regarding recombinant DNA. This includes review of human gene transfer trials, and an assessment of the ability of DNA recombinants to survive in nature and the potential for transfer of genetic material to other organisms. It also considers hypothetical hazards and methods for monitoring and minimizing risks. Approximately one-third of the 15 members do not have scientific expertise but represent public interests and attitudes. This balance is intended to provide a forum for open public debate of social and scientific ...

Moving Forward in the Efficient Management and Use of Core Facilities
During the past year, NIH and the extramural research community have been focused on bringing improvements to accessing and managing research core facilities. At this year’s conference, presenters will provide updates on the actions NIH has taken to address some of the concerns raised at the conference “The Efficient Management and Use of Core Facilities,” held in 2009, and to more deeply explore the key challenges to managing and accessing core facilities. Specifically, this conference will focus on:
Training for core directors
Registries of core facilities
Software for core management
