α(2)-µ-Globulin fragment (a2-f) from kidneys of male rats.
Abstract
The structure of α(2)-µ-Globulin fragment (A2-f) is not known.α(2)-µ-Globulin fragment (A2-f) is a 15.5 kDa protein that binds equimolar amount of fatty acids in male rat kidneys. The expression of this protein has been shown to change in response to druginduced and genetic hypertension which suggests that it plays an important role in renal fatty acid metabolism under pathological conditions as well as normal conditions. A2-f has sequence homology with amino acid 28-178 of α(2)-µ-Globulin (A2U) that is synthesized pre-dominantly in the male rat liver and is present in the urine. It is believed that ...

Molecular modeling, dynamics studies and virtual screening of Fructose 1, 6 biphosphate aldolase-II in community acquired- methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA).
Abstract
Community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) has recently emerged as a nosocomial pathogen to the community which commonly causes skin and soft-tissue infections (SSTIs). This strain (MW2) has now become resistant to the most of the beta-lactam antibiotics; therefore it is the urgent need to identify the novel drug targets. Recently fructose 1,6 biphosphate aldolase-II (FBA) has been identified as potential drug target in CA-MRSA. The FBA catalyses the retro-ketolic cleavage of fructose-1,6-bisphosphate (FBP) to yield dihydroxyacetone phosphate (DHAP) and glyceraldehyde-3-phosph...

SoyProDB: A database for the identification of soybean seed proteins.
Abstract
Soybean continues to serve as a rich and inexpensive source of protein for humans and animals. A substantial amount of information has been reported on the genotypic variation and beneficial genetic manipulation of soybeans. For better understanding of the consequences of genetic manipulation, elucidation of soybean protein composition is necessary, because of its direct relationship to phenotype. We have conducted studies to determine the composition of storage, allergen and anti-nutritional proteins in cultivated soybean using a combined proteomics approach. Two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophor...

Comparative Molecular docking analysis of DNA Gyrase subunit A in Pseudomonas aeruginosaPAO1.
Abstract
Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an opportunistic bacterium known for causing chronic infections in cystic fibrosis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients. Recently, several drug targets in Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 have been reported using network biology approaches on the basis of essentiality and topology and further ranked on network measures viz. degree and centrality. Till date no drug/ligand molecule has been reported against this targets. In our work we have identified the ligand /drug molecules, through Orthologous gene mapping against Bacillus subtilis subsp. subtilis str. 168 and pe...

Impact of rtI233V mutation in hepatitis B virus polymerase protein and adefovir efficacy: Homology modeling and molecular docking studies.
In this study, it was attempted to evaluate the impact of putative rtI233V substitution on adefovir action by homology modeling and docking studies. The HBVrt nucleotide sequence containing rtI233V mutation was obtained from the treatment-naive chronic hepatitis B subject. The three dimensional model of HBV polymerase/rt was constructed using the HIV-1rt template (PDB code: 1RTD A) and the model was evaluated by the Ramachandran plot. Autodock was employed to dock the HBV polymerase/rt and adefovir. The modelled structure showed the amino acid rtI233 to be located away from the drug interactory site. The substitution of is...

Insight towards the conserved water mediated recognition of catalytic and structural Zn(+2) ions in human Matrix Metalloproteinase-8 enzyme: A study by MD-simulation methods.
Abstract
Human matrix metalloproteinase-8 (hMMP-8) plays a important role in the progression of colorectal cancer, metastasis, multiple sclerosis and rheumetoid arthritis. Extensive MD-simulation of the PDB and solvated structures of hMMP-8 has revealed the presence of few conserved water molecules around the catalytic and structural zinc (ZnC and ZnS) ions. The coordination of two conserved water molecules (W and WS) to ZnS and the H-bonding interaction of WS to S151 have indicated the plausible involvement of that metal ion in the catalytic process. Beside this the coupling of ZnC and ZnS metal ions (ZnC - W(H) (...

PICK1 (protein interacting with C kinase) and neurological disorders
Abstract
Best known for its interaction with the α‐amino‐3‐hydroxy‐5‐methyl‐4‐isoxazolepropionic acid receptor (AMPAR) subunit GluA2 and for its influence on excitatory synapse activity, the protein interacting with protein kinase C, PICK1, is the focus of considerable attention from neurobiologists. Indeed, this PDZ domain‐containing protein has been shown to interact with a wide variety of neurotransmitter receptors, transporters and enzymes, including glutamate and nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, dopamine and glutamate transporters and the enzyme serine racemase. Through its lipid binding domain, PIC...

No More OJ? An Invasive Insect Threatens the Citrus Industry (preview)
One day in 2005, just before Hurricane Katrina blew through Florida and devastated New Orleans, Susan Halbert stood before a pomelo tree on a farm outside Miami. Something about this tree did not look right. It seemed undernourished: its leaves were sparse, and its melon-size citrus fruit was lopsided. Yet all the other plants in the garden were thriving, and the woman who took care of them had carefully tended the pomelo with a fresh layer of fertilizer. “She clearly knew how to grow plants,” says Halbert, an entomologist for the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS). New Geothermal Data System Could Open Up Clean-Energy Reserves
Geologic data does not come cheap, especially when you are using it to build a multimillion-dollar geothermal power plant. Just ask Susan Petty, president and chief technology officer at AltaRock Energy. Her company is part of a $43.8-million pilot project to tap thermal energy from Oregon's Newberry Volcano . Engineers are injecting water deep underground to fracture superheated rocks and create a geothermal reservoir. Their eventual goal is to recirculate pressurized steam back to the surface to test a new kind of technology called an enhanced geothermal system (EGS) . Unlike conventional power plants that rely on ne...

Germany Investigates Possible Organic Egg Fraud
BERLIN (Reuters) - German authorities are investigating possible large-scale fraud by organic egg producers amid increased concern over food industry practices following Europe's horse meat scandal. The northern state of Lower Saxony, a major agricultural hub, has launched probes of some 150 farms suspected of wrongly selling eggs produced by hens kept in overcrowded conditions under the organic label. Two other states are investigating a further 50 farms."If the accusations (against the farms) are found to be true, then we are talking of fraud on a grand scale: fraud against consumers but also fraud against the many organic...

Step Inside the Real World of Compulsive Hoarders
If you had opened the front door of Lee Shuer's apartment in the early 2000s, you would have encountered a narrow hallway made even narrower by all kinds of random stuff: unnervingly tall stacks of books and papers, cardboard boxes full of assorted knickknacks, and two hot pink salon hair dryer chairs with glass domes suspended from their arched necks. Sidling down the hallway to the right, you would have reached Shuer's bedroom. The door would have opened just wide enough for you to squeeze inside, where you would have seen mounds of stuff three to four feet high on the floor, bed and every available surface. A ty...

Pharmacokinetics of two common antiretroviral regimens in older HIV‐infected patients: a pilot study
ConclusionsThis study demonstrates that the PK of these ARVs are altered by 5–78% in an older HIV‐infected population. Implications of PK differences for clinical outcomes, particularly with the active nucleoside metabolites, remain to be explored. This study forms the basis for further study of ARV PK, efficacy, and toxicity in older HIV‐infected patients.

R‐CHOP therapy alone in limited stage diffuse large B‐cell lymphoma
Summary
Long‐term observation has identified a pattern of continuing relapse in limited stage diffuse large B‐cell lymphoma (DLBCL) treated by three cycles of R‐CHOP (rituximab, cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, prednisone) plus involved‐field irradiation. We retrospectively analysed 190 untreated patients with limited stage DLBCL treated by R‐CHOP alone. All the patients were scheduled to undergo primary therapy with six cycles of full‐dose R‐CHOP. Cases with a dose reduction of more than 20% were excluded from the study. Additional local irradiation was allowed in patients with partial response (P...

The mystery mammal of Kayan Mentarang
Back in 2005, the discovery of a weird reddish, long-tailed mammal, photographed by a camera-trap at Kayan Mentarang in central Borneo, was announced by the Swiss World Wildlife Fund. I covered the case and how it unfolded back at Tet Zoo ver 1 during January 2007. That's such a long time ago that now is probably a good time to recycle the whole story. So, here it is again, with updates as and where appropriate. The big deal about the Kayan Mentarang animal is that it was hailed as a possible new species. [More]

A randomized controlled clinical multicenter trial comparing the clinical and histological performance of a new, modified polylactide‐co‐glycolide acid membrane to an expanded polytetrafluorethylene membrane in guided bone regeneration procedures
ConclusionPeri‐implant GBR was successfully performed using either of the membranes. The control membrane was able to better maintain the horizontal thickness of regenerated bone and revealed less soft tissue complications. No statistically valid evidence about the superiority of one membrane was found in any other parameters. Soft tissue dehiscences occur with both types of membranes and can impair the amount of regenerated bone.

Immunization with 60 kD Ro peptide produces different stages of pre‐clinical autoimmunity in a Sjögren's syndrome‐model among multiple strains of inbred mice
Abstract
Sjögren's syndrome is a chronic illness characteristically manifested by immune injury to the salivary and lacrimal glands, resulting in dry mouth/eyes. Anti‐Ro (SSA) and anti‐La (SSB) autoantibodies are frequently found in Sjögren's subjects as well as individuals that will go on to develop the disease. Immunization of BALB/c mice with Ro60 peptides results in epitope spreading with anti‐Ro and anti‐La along with lymphocyte infiltration of salivary glands similar to human Sjögren's. In addition, these animals have poor salivary function/low saliva volume. Here, we examined whether Ro‐peptide immuniza...

Withdrawal of nonfutile life support after attempted suicide.
Abstract
End-of-life decision making is fraught with ethical challenges. Withholding or withdrawing life support therapy is widely considered ethical in patients with high treatment burden, poor premorbid status, or significant projected disability even when such treatment is not "futile." Whether such withdrawal of therapy in the aftermath of attempted suicide is ethical is not well established in the literature. We provide a clinical vignette and propose criteria under which such withdrawal would be ethical. We suggest that it is appropriate to withdraw life support, regardless of the cause of the critical illnes...
