"Stitch-Free" Surgical 'Laser Welding' Of Tissue In Intestinal Surgery Improved
A new "solder" for laser welding of tissue during surgical operations has the potential to produce stronger seals and expand use of this alternative to conventional sutures and stapling in intestinal surgery, scientists are reporting. Their study, which involves use of a gold-based solder, or sealing material, appears in the journal ACS Nano. Kaushal Rege and colleagues explain that laser tissue welding (LTW) is a "stitch-free" surgical method for connecting and sealing blood vessels, cartilage in joints, the liver, the urinary tract and other tissues... Clinical outcome of early glottic carcinoma in Serbia
Conclusion: Considering that the choice of treatment in our country is also greatly influenced by other paramedical factors, such as distance from treatment facility, reliability of follow-up, significant time delay of radiotherapy because of small number of radiology centers and strong patients’ surgeon and treatment preference, we consider endoscopic laser surgery highly efficient and preferred choice of treatment for early glottic carcinoma. Bovine Milk–derived Lactoferrin Exerts Proangiogenic Effects in an Src-Akt-eNOS–dependent Manner in Response to Ischemia
In this study, we investigated the effects of LF on angiogenesis using C57BL/6J mice that received daily unilateral treatment with or without bovine milk–derived LF (bLF) after unilateral hindlimb surgery. The analysis of laser speckle blood flow showed that bLF treatment promoted blood flow recovery in response to ischemic hindlimb. The capillary density of ischemic adductor muscles and the phosphorylation of Src, Akt, and endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) were also significantly higher in bLF-treated mice than in vehicle-treated mice. Furthermore, bLF increased the phosphorylation levels of Src, Akt, and eNOS in...

Laser and Radiosurgery in Veterinary Dentistry
Lasers and radiosurgery frequently used in human dentistry are rapidly entering veterinary dental use. The carbon dioxide, diode, and low-level therapy lasers have features including hemostasis control, access to difficult to reach areas, and decreased pain, that make them useful for oral surgery. Periodontal pocket surgery, gingivectomy, gingivoplasty, gingival hyperplasia, operculectomy, tongue surgery, oropharyngeal inflammation therapy, oral mass surgery, crown, and frenectomy laser surgeries are described, including images. History of Power Sources in Endoscopic Surgery
Abstract: The history of energy sources used in surgery is inextricably linked to the history of electricity. Milestones include identification of safe electrical waveforms that can be used in the human body, patient isolation to prevent alternate-site burns, bipolar energy sources to negate capacitance injuries, laser energy, and the combination vessel sealing devices commonly used today. Engineering efforts to eliminate many of the hazards of electrosurgery are critical to how we practice modern gynecologic surgery. The introduction of bipolar instruments, increasing the safety of monopolar electrosurgery by not using hy...

Excimer laser surface ablation: a review of recent literature
The aim was to review the recently published literature on excimer laser surface ablation procedures, including photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), laser sub‐epithelial keratomileusis (LASEK), microkeratome‐assisted PRK (epi‐LASIK) and trans‐epithelial (laser‐assisted) PRK, to help elucidate where and how surface ablation may best fit into current refractive surgical practice. The emphasis was on publications within the last three years and included systemic reviews, meta‐analyses and randomised controlled trials. Where such evidence did not exist, selective large series cohort studies, case‐controlled studies...

Outcomes for temporal lobe epilepsy operations may not be equal: A call for an RCT of ATL vs SAH
An assured way to kindle a lively debate among epilepsy specialists is to ask, "What is the best surgery for medically refractory mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (mTLE)—anterior temporal lobectomy (ATL) or selective amygdalohippocampectomy (SAH)?" Usually, patients with mTLE have seizures arising from epileptogenic lesions such as hippocampal sclerosis or low-grade gliomas involving the lesion and surrounding hippocampus, amygdala, and parahippocampal cortex, although some mTLE cases do not have detectable lesions on imaging. ATL removes the temporal pole to allow access to the lesion and mesial temporal structures (fi...

A Light Emitting Diode (LED) Based Spatial Frequency Domain Imaging System for Optimization of Photodynamic Therapy of Nonmelanoma Skin Cancer: Quantitative Reflectance Imaging
ConclusionsSFDI can be used to quantitatively characterize in vivo tissue optical properties that could be useful for better informing PDT treatment parameters. Specifically, this information provides spatially resolved insight into light delivery into tissue and local tissue oxygenation, thereby providing more quantitative and controlled dosimetry specific to the lesion. Ultimately, by optimizing the execution of PDT, this instrument has the potential to positively improve treatment outcomes. Lasers Surg. Med. 9999:XX–XX, 2013. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. 808 nm Wavelength Light Induces a Dose‐Dependent Alteration in Microglial Polarization and Resultant Microglial Induced Neurite Growth
ConclusionThese data suggest that the Arndt–Schulz law as applied to PBM for a specific bioassay does not hold true in cells with a spectrum of responses, and that PBM can alter microglial phenotype across this spectrum in a dose‐dependent manner. These data are therefore of important relevance to not only therapies in the CNS but also to understanding of PBM effects and mechanisms. Lasers Surg. Med. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Recommendations to protect people who choose cosmetic surgery
The recommendations are outlined in the Review of the Regulation of Cosmetic Interventions. The review found that, despite the popularity of non-surgical procedures such as Botox, dermal fillers or laser hair removal – which account for nine out of ten procedures in the UK – there is almost no regulation for them. This is despite the fact that they can have major, permanent effects on people’s health. (Source: NHS Networks)

Cosmetic treatments need new regulation report finds
New proposals to regulate cosmetic procedures were widely reported in the papers today, with the Daily Mail reporting the need to "rein in cosmetic surgery cowboys", and The Daily Telegraph warning that anti-wrinkle treatments are "a crisis waiting to happen". The stories are based on an independent review of regulations governing the UK cosmetic industry, which is worth an estimated £3.6 billion. The review was chaired by the NHS medical director, Professor Sir Bruce Keogh, who said anyone having cosmetic procedures should be better protected than at present. People carrying out cosmetic procedures sh...

Femtosecond laser–assisted cataract surgery in infants
We describe a technique for performing cataract surgery with a femtosecond laser in infants. Anterior capsulotomy and lens division are performed by the laser. A fluid-filled interface makes it possible to re-dock the laser to the eye for posterior capsulotomy after the eye has been opened for lens aspiration without complications. The integrated 3-dimensional optical coherence tomography also visualizes the posterior capsule, allowing a centered central posterior capsulotomy followed by mechanical anterior vitrectomy. The anterior and the posterior capsule disks are removed without capsule tears. The technique has been pe...

Endoscopic CO2 laser laryngofissure in pediatric laryngotracheal reconstruction
Abstract: Anterior laryngofissure is often needed to provide excellent visualization of the posterior cricoid lamina during pediatric laryngotracheal reconstruction. Focus has shifted from survival and decannulation outcomes to postoperative voice outcomes as surgical techniques continue to improve. Surgeons must perform the laryngofissure extremely precisely to avoid damage to the true vocal folds and ensure proper reapproximation of the anterior commissure. Endoscopic CO2 laser laryngofissure represents a novel technique to divide the anterior commissure and facilitate its accurate reapproximation. (Source: International...
