To pack my 4-week vacation time, on top of social meet-ups and the like, i met up with a beloved mentor of mine at TTSH Dept of Gen Surg and did a few days of hospital attachment. Please understand, he is probably about Sidney’s age, and is semi-retiring. So he only does one OR day, and 2 clinic sessions. As a general surgeon, he does mainly hernia repairs, thyroidectomies, mastectomies and gastrectomies. At clinics, these are the problems we encounter all the time. Most of them are follow up cases who are here to  be reviewed, e.g. thyroid function tests, wound healing, etc. Its easy, but not very exciting. I suppo...

Tried to get private loans, I can't do it alone and the three cosigners I tried have too poor of an income to debt ratio. What can I do besides put of school for a year to fix my credit, save money?

I've added to the original list, which I made first year :)1) Everything you've ever wanted to know about philosophy can be learned from watching South Park.2) Do not try to carry an IKEA desk home on the bus. Especially not during rush hour, and particularly not when also carrying a backpack full of textbooks as well as a lamp.3) Roommates should be either gay men or straight women*, because it really really stinks when your roommate falls in love with you.4) Living surrounded by meddies does not automatically equal a good studying environment. A while ago, a noted figure in healthcare blogging came to talk to my hospital; he and I know each other through our blogs and I introduced myself before the talk. During the talk I got a page from a nurse, and had to go out of the room to answer a call about a patient. Apparently in the meantime someone asked the speaker about his blog and he said something about how blogging is partly an inherently narcissistic act, and then looked over in my direction and said, "What do you think Joe?" Are You Clean Inside? You may have seen them. The websites that promote natural healthy cures if you buy a certain product. Liver cleanses, colon flushes, to rid the body of 'toxins' and 'caked-on stool inside the colon.' The websites themselves can be pretty convincing. They use big scientific words, often refer to accurate physiology to support their claims, and most of all, are full of testimonials from people who swear the product worked on them (a big red flag...real doctors make treatment decisions based on scientific studies, not testimonials). Therefore I'm excited to introduce you to Science-Based Medicine, a blog ...

This one is pretty interesting how they jump on one provisional diagnosis to another. But you kind of get the pattern how they are doing this entire TV series. They shoot the first scene of the patient, exhibiting some symptoms, and somehow he or she presents to the hospital. They take on the case, come up with differentials, and they order tests to ascertain what’s going on. They get it wrong a couple of times, and the producers take the chance to insert short snippets of drama in between. It could be Dr House irritating Dr Cuddy the hospital CEO, or something like that. In this 2nd episode, a 16-year-old high schoo...

Non-Traditional Premeds :: How to calculate GPA from multiple schools?email this article save this article to My Clippings discuss this articlediscuss this article
Author: Lana Subject: How to calculate GPA from multiple schools? Posted: Tue Jul 01, 2008 6:02 pm (GMT -5) Topic Replies: 2 Hello, Lurking here for a long time; having done much searching about GPA between colleges, I thought I'd ask a question. I know ALL college credit hours are taken into account - but does this include two year "technical college" credits as well? I would assume so. I've gone to three different colleges - to calculate my combined GPA for all institutions, would I use the regular 4.0 scale and assign each class, regardless of college, the appropriate score? Thanks! Lana

A dose of first year medicineemail this article save this article to My Clippings discuss this articlediscuss this article
It’s over one year on since I first started this blog, back in the days of wonderment, excitement and feverish anticipation. A whole year of lectures, practicals, workshops, placements, tutorials, patients and exams – and a year that has come with sweet highs and bitter lows. Medicine it would seem is the abyss, and one year on I am still right at the top, staring down. The Good“I've never seen so many men wasted so badly”AnatomyThe best subject in the first year, by a long shot. Anatomy turned out to be far more in depth, and artistic than I’d previously thought. A subject so literally self-indulgent, an apprenti...

Canada On Strike!email this article save this article to My Clippings discuss this articlediscuss this article
Today is Canada Day!  And in honor of a blog friend (to whom I won’t link so there’s no inappropriate association, but s/he knows who s/he is) I post this funny (language NSFW) to celebrate along with: Obviously, this is from South Park, but this time Canada strikes back!  You hear that, buddy?  Oh, I’m not your buddy, friend?  Well, OK buddy. Believe it or not, YouTube was full of bum links for this, and obviously the copyright bots are out in full force for something like South Park, so this is my own copy and is being hosted locally.  I’ll keep this post up for a day or so then consider ta...

The weekly compendium of the best posts in the medical blogopshere is now up at The Covert Rationing Blog. The first post of my new series on the review of House M.D was featured: When DrRich was a medical student, the only decent doctor show on TV was Marcus Welby, MD - a series that was heavy on personal interaction but weak on medical information. So cracking the books was the only good option for learning a little medicine. Today, medical students have many more options. Monash medical student, for instance, is fighting misinformation (his and ours) by reviewing episodes of House. Hop on over to catch up on the latest best posts!

The only problem is that I'm not majoring in a science related field, so I never took chem, bio,or physics, but I did take calculus(if that means anything). I figure I could take science classes in the summer and also go to school for another year or something. I was planning on t...
