The ubiquitin-proteasome system (UPS) is composed of a set of enzymes that attach ubiquitin to specific proteins and the proteasome. The primary function of labeling substrates with ubiquitin moieties is to destine these proteins for destruction by the proteasome. By regulating levels of specific proteins via the UPS, cells can promote cell cycle progression and many adaptive responses and also eliminate mis-folded, potentially toxic proteins.
