Impact of beam quality on megavoltage radiotherapy treatment techniques utilizing gold nanoparticles for dose enhancement.
This study determines the optimal clinical scenarios for gold nanoparticle dose enhancement as a function of irradiation conditions and potential biological targets using megavoltage x-ray beams. Four hundred and eighty clinical beams were studied for different potential cellular or sub-cellular targets. Beam quality was determined based on a 6 MV linac with and without a flattening filter for various delivery conditions. Dose enhancement ratios DER = D(GNP)/D(water) were calculated for all cases using the GEANT4 Monte Carlo code and the CEPXS/ONEDANT radiation transport deterministic code. Dose enhancement using GEANT4 a...

Microfluidic fabrication of cell adhesive chitosan microtubes.
Abstract
Chitosan has been used as a scaffolding material in tissue engineering due to its mechanical properties and biocompatibility. With increased appreciation of the effect of micro- and nanoscale environments on cellular behavior, there is increased emphasis on generating microfabricated chitosan structures. Here we employed a microfluidic coaxial flow-focusing system to generate cell adhesive chitosan microtubes of controlled sizes by modifying the flow rates of a chitosan pre-polymer solution and phosphate buffered saline (PBS). The microtubes were extruded from a glass capillary with a 300 μm inner diamet...

Kinetic development of biofilm on NF membranes at the Méry-sur-Oise plant, France.
Abstract
The kinetic formation of biofilms developing on nanofiltration (NF) membranes was studied for 2 years in the water production unit of Méry-sur-Oise, France. New membranes were set up in a pilot train integrated to the plant and autopsied after operation for 7, 80, 475 and 717 days. The biofouling layer was studied by confocal laser scanning microscope after 4',6-diamidino-2-phenyindole dihydrochloride and lectin staining, and by attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and rheology experiments. Three stages of biofilm growth were discriminated: (1) the presence of sessile m...
