Tobacco use is the number one preventable cause of death and disability in the United States today. In 2003, the Interagency Committee on Smoking and Health recommended to establish a federally funded national tobacco quitline network by 2005. Quitlines are telephone-based programs that assist tobacco users to quit. The combination of health professionals referring patients to an accessible, evidence-based, cost-effective cessation resource can produce a substantial reduction in the number of tobacco users in the United States. Initiatives to increase knowledge and working relationships between nurses and quitlines need to...

Nursing faculty practice groups can play a vital role in tobacco cessation in academic medical centers. Outcomes from the Georgia Health Sciences University Nursing Faculty Practice Group Tobacco Cessation Program revealed 64% abstinence outcomes at the end of treatment (N = 160) over a 2-year period from the campus-wide tobacco-free policy initiation. A nurse-led, evidence-based, interdisciplinary approach can be an effective strategy to make a difference in the lives of tobacco-dependent individuals, while at the same time integrating practice with education and research. Conclusion
This large study had several strengths. Unlike some previous studies, it collected information on and took into account other key risk factors for fracture, including body weight, smoking, alcohol use and physical activity. It also looked at the women’s use of PPIs every two years (rather than just asking them once) and took into account variations in use during this time in their analysis.
However, as the authors note, it also had some limitations:
It did not ask about the brands of PPI used, nor the doses of PPI the women took, both of which could affect risk of fracture.

Confusion exists about the intent and focus of annual performance reviews (APR) compared with professional peer reviews (PPR). To ensure that both reviews are meeting organizational, professional, individual nurse, and patient needs, it's important to clarify the issues of ownership and intended outcomes for these processes. Understanding the purposes and expected outcomes can help managers move beyond what can feel like a dreaded task that yields a lot of paper work and little value to a meaningful process that can create individual, professional, and organizational success.
