Novel findings of an iatrogenic fetal membrane defect after previous fetoscopy for twin-twin transfusion.
Abstract
A 25 year old G(2) P(1001) underwent a fetoscopic laser surgery (FLS) for stage II twin twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS) at 18 weeks of gestation. An ultrasound guided percutaneous entry in the suprapubic region was performed using a 12 F cannula for the procedure due to a central anterior placentation. Complete photocoagulation of 26 vessels was performed followed by the use of the Solomon technique to assure dichorionization of the placenta. Due to a recurrence of the oligo-polyhramnios sequence, a repeat laser was undertaken at 21 weeks of gestation. This was only the second time we have undertaken a re...

Perinatal outcome after selective feticide in monochorionic twin pregnancies.
CONCLUSIONS: The risk of adverse perinatal outcome after selective feticide is increased and associated with low gestational age at occurrence of PPROM and low gestational age at delivery. Long-term follow-up to assess neurodevelopmental outcome in survivors is required.

Fetal biometry: how well can offline measurements from 3D volumes substitute real time 2D measurements?
CONCLUSIONS: Fetal biometry measurements derived from 3D volume acquisitions exhibited good agreement with real time 2D scanning with no extra systematic or random error. However, they were slower to obtain, not all volumes could be reconstructed, and those that came from ahead facing anterioposteriorly, or with the long axis of the femur at 60-90(0) to the transducerwere systematically smaller.

Professional QOL of Japanese nurses/midwives providing abortion/childbirth care.
This study explored the relationship between professional quality of life and emotion work and the major stress factors related to abortion care in Japanese obstetric and gynecological nurses and midwives. Between October 2011 and January 2012, questionnaires that included questions concerning eight stress factors, the Professional Quality of Life Scale, and the Japanese version of the Frankfurt Emotional Work Scale, were answered by 255 nurses and midwives working in abortion and childbirth services. Professional Quality of Life scores (compassion fatigue, compassion satisfaction, burnout) were significantly associated wi...

Vaginal progesterone, cerclage or cervical pessary for preventing preterm birth in asymptomatic singleton pregnant women with a history of preterm birth and a sonographic short cervix
ConclusionCerclage, vaginal progesterone and pessary appear to have similar effectiveness as management strategies in women with singleton pregnancy, previous spontaneous preterm birth and short cervix. Direct randomized comparisons of these strategies, or combinations thereof, are needed to determine optimal management. Copyright © 2012 ISUOG. Published by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Human Computation as a New Method for Evidence-Based Knowledge Transfer in Web-Based Guideline Development Groups: Proof of Concept Randomized Controlled Trial
Conclusions: Overall, the use of the IC method was appropriate as long as the evidence supported participants’ beliefs or usual practice, or when the availability of the evidence was sparse. However, when some controversy about the evidence existed, the HC method outperformed the IC method. The findings of our study illustrate the importance of the choice of the consensus method in guideline development. Human computation could be an acceptable methodology for guideline development specifically for scenarios in which the evidence shows no resonance with participants’ beliefs. Future research is needed t...

Halleluiah, lessons from WHI by WHI people.
Abstract
ABSTRACT For many years the preliminary results of both arms of the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) were translated into very cautious, even negative recommendations in regard to the use of postmenopausal hormones. Despite the fact that further analyses from the WHI study, as well as data from other studies should have dictated a more positive approach toward hormone therapy (HT) later on, the official position of the US health authorities has actually remained unchanged. Many societies, such as the International Menopause Society, the North American Menopause Society and the Endocrine Society, recently e...

A Case Study of Maternal Response to the Implied Antepartum Diagnosis of Inevitable Labor Dystocia
ABSTRACT
Two pregnant women, one obese and one of extremely small stature, received antepartum recommendations from their health care providers to schedule cesarean births. In response, both women sought providers who would support their desire to attempt vaginal birth. The women's perspectives on their birth experiences along with the pertinent medical record data from their pregnancies and births provide a reminder about the inherent normalcy of birth amid the current culture of interventive obstetrical practices.

The association of neighbourhood and individual social capital with consistent self-rated health: a longitudinal study in Brazilian pregnant and postpartum women
Conclusions:
Low individual social capital during pregnancy, considered here as social support and social network, was independently associated with poor SRH in women whereas neighbourhood social capital did not affect women's SRH during pregnancy and the months thereafter. From pregnancy and up to six months postpartum, the effect of individual social capital explained better the consistency of SRH over time than neighbourhood social capital.

A qualitative interview study exploring pregnant women's and health professionals' attitudes to external cephalic version
Conclusions:
Women had a range of attitudes to ECV informed by their preferences for how to give birth; the acceptability of ECV to them; and lay accounts of ECV, which were frequently negative. Most professionals described having a preference for ECV and reported directively counselling women to choose it. Some professionals were dismissive of lay beliefs about ECV. Some key challenges for shared decision making about breech presentation were identified: health professionals counselling women directively about ECV and the differences between evidence-based information about ECV and lay beliefs. To address these challenges...

Prevention and management of excessive gestational weight gain: a survey of overweight and obese pregnant women
Conclusions:
These data suggest a lack of awareness amongst overweight and obese women regarding excessive gestational weight gain. Monitoring of gestational weight gain, and approaches for its management, should be formally integrated into routine antenatal care. Barriers to the uptake of resources to address weight gain are numerous and must be considered in the design of future interventions and services.

Maternal near miss and quality of maternal health care in Baghdad, Iraq
Conclusions:
The WHO near-miss approach allowed systematic identification of the roadblocks to improve quality of care and then monitoring the progress. Critical evidence-based practices, relevant to the management of women experiencing life-threatening conditions, are underused. In addition, possible limitations in the referral system result in a very high proportion of women presenting at the hospital already in a severe health condition (i.e. with organ dysfunction). A shortage of ICU beds leading to women taken care of without admission to ICU may also contribute to a high proportion of maternal deaths and organ dysfunction.

Accuracy of erythrogram and serum ferritin for the maternal anemia diagnosis (AMA): a phase 3 diagnostic study on prediction of the therapeutic responsiveness to oral iron in pregnancy
This study has a prospective design with a before-after intervention of 80 mg of daily oral iron during 90 days and will be analyzed as a delayed-type cross-sectional study. Women at the second trimester of pregnancy are being evaluated with clinical and laboratorial examinations at the enrollment and monthly. The 'responsiveness to therapeutic test with oral iron' (gold-standard) was defined to an increase of at least 0.55 Z-score in haemoglobin after 4 weeks of treatment and a total dose of 1200 mg of iron. At the study conclusion, sensitivities, specificities, predictive values, likelihood ratios and areas under the ROC...
