Need help interpreting MRI
Conclusion: There are disc protrusion at L4-L5 and L5-S1. At L5-S1 the disc touches the traversing S1 nerve roots bilatterly. Please correlate for S1 radiculopathy. Flexion/Extension Xray Findings: There is mild wedging of the T10-T11 vertebral bodies with accentuation of the throacic kyphosis at that level. There is disc space narrowing at L5-S1. What does this all mean and how is it treated? Is there hope that I could have less pain? Also when I looked up the wedging of my thoracic discs all I could find was info about compression/wedge fractures. Is my disc fractured or was it at some point? How is that treated? I a...

Shadowing Question
I currently have about 100 hours in the OR. Most of which are in neuro, then orthopaedics and general. I am quite fond of neurosurgery. I know the surgeon thinks highly of me, and I will probably get a spectacular LOR. I have some options: 1) A hand surgeon 2) A friend's dad -eye surgeon 3) Heart surgeon- I met him in the OR one day. 4) Friend's dad- OB/GYN Should I stay in neuro or get some experience in more fields? scheduling an audition rotation during my vacation month in 4th yr
Hey Guys, I am a DO student interested in Orthopaedic Surgery. I get a vacation month in 4th year and was thinking of scheduling an audition rotation during that month. I am concerned that my school probably doesnt cover my malpractice insurance during that month. Does anybody have any insight as to how I can make this possible? Has anybody scheduled an away rotation during their vacation month? if so how did you approach your school administrators? What did you tell them? Thank you (Source: Student Doctor Network Forums)

Shadowing a Surgeon
I just shadowed an Orthopedic surgeon today and during the shadow, I had some etiquette questions arise. For starters: The surgeon was nice however he was very quiet. When he talked to me, it was hard to hear the whole time. It was probably because his back was to me, he had a mask on, i was three feet behind him and they were playing music. Would it be appropriate or would it be rude to ask him to speak up because I cannot hear him. Furthermore, the surgeon and his staff in the OR were chit-chatting a lot about random stuff as they worked. They started talking about the Lord of the Rings trilogy (which I had watched the...

Few questions about podiatry
I've recently become very interested in podiatry and have been reading through the "true stories from podiatric residency" thread. I noticed a lot of stories about getting called to the er to respond to foot traumas; things like gsw's and fractures. These things are very cool to me and one of the reasons I think I would enjoy the work. However, those type of things seem to overlap a lot with orthopedic surgeons. What factors decide if podiatry or ortho get called to foot trauma? Is it possible/common to work in a hospital where these injuries are always left to ortho? There seems to be an overlap in other areas...

I know each SMP has their own way of doing it, any insight on it would definitely be appreciated! I guess I can be considered a non-trad. Telluride ED Elective
Hi everyone. We run a great elective in Telluride, Colorado for senior level Emergency Medicine residents. It generally runs for one month but in rare cases we can squeeze people in for two weeks. It is generally pretty competitive to get in but this year I have had someone cancel on our December slot. This is a great time to be in Telluride. We have the World Cup snowboarding event here, which you get to be a course side doctor on. Christmas is very busy with lots of orthopedic injuries and reductions. We do all our own sedations, reductions etc. as there is no specialty backup and it is one of the few EDs in the country ...

Specialty acceptance rates?!
So, I was just perusing my "Getting Through Dental School" book provided by ASDA here at UConn. I was flipping through the pages and could not help but notice some pretty shocking numbers (below). What I am wondering is are these acceptance rates per applicant or per application? For example, is this to say that 3520 people applied to an endodontics program and only 205 (5.8%) were accepted OR, is this to say that 3520 applications were submitted and 205 applications were accepted? I am hoping it is the later since it seems that most people just spray and pray with 15+ applications. Any input on this? Thanks in a...

Ophthalmology vs. Orthopedic Surgery Match
Still trying to understand this: So Ophtho has a much earlier match around January with lists having to be completed by then. If you match in the early match, are you stuck in Ophtho? For example, two fields that I find quite similar are orthopedic hand and ophtho (love fine surgery). What if you wanted mostly optho but may a shot at some higher orthos? Is that even possible? I know people apply to a few different somewhat specialties such as PM&R and Ortho. Is it possible to apply to both Optho and Ortho? Thanks (Source: Student Doctor Network Forums)

Can you offer your insight, please? 26 y/o female with hypermobile joints presents with severe knee pain and swelling and inability to ambulate for 3 days somewhat relieved with ibuprofen and icepacks. There was no obvious trigger - the knee just "locked" when she was at her desk. What should I recommend? MRI? PT? She isn't opposed to surgery if it will help.
