Illumination of innate and adpative immunity in the brain
NIH Director's Seminar Series Immune responses are highly dynamic and often shaped by the tissue in which they develop. The Viral Immunology and Intravital Imaging Unit is interested in defining the mechanics of innate and adaptive immune responses in living tissues. To accomplish this, we use a real-time imaging technique referred to as two-photon laser scanning microscopy. This approach enables us to peer into lymphoid and non-lymphoid tissues as they experience different immunological perturbations. We are particularly interested in understanding the dynamics of immune responses that develop to infections (viruses, par...

Mosquito Immunity and Malaria Transmission
Director's Seminar Series The Mosquito Immunity and Vector Competence Section investigates the interactions between the mosquito immune system and Plasmodium parasites to understand how they affect disease transmission. Our four major areas of interest are: to investigate the interactions between Plasmodium parasites, the gut microbiota, and mosquito midgut epithelial cells, to understand the regulation of the immune pathways that mediate antiplasmodial responses, to explore hemocyte differentiation and innate immune memory in mosquitoes and to identify the genes that allow some strains of Plasmodium to evade the mosquit...

Amebic Colitis
A 56 year-old man was referred for colonoscopy after experiencing three months of watery diarrhea and crampy abdominal pain. He denied fevers or chills, hematochezia, recent travel, sick contacts, or recently taking antibiotics. His primary care physician referred him for colonoscopy after he was found to have a leukocytosis of 15,200 with 70% neutrophils and 5.4% eosinophils as well as negative bacterial stool culture and C. diff toxin. The ulcerations encountered on colonoscopy are characteristic for invasive Entamoeba histolytica infection. There were numerous discrete 3-4mm clean based well demarcated ulcerations w...

Allergy probably dates back to when we had lots of parasitic infection, things like worms and bugs that used to live in us, and still do in some parts of the world. (Source: Streaming Well - Health Videos)
