All Branch Topic (ABT) How competitive is mil training in civilian world?
I've done searches and did not find what I was looking for, so forgive me if this thread is redundant, or misplaced.
If I did a military program for school (HPSP or FAP), would I be a competitive applicant for civilian jobs later?
To be clear, I AM interested in a career in the military (my husband served 6 years in the Marine Corps, so I am familiar with and enjoy military life). I am concerned that if I do my military residency and serve my time, what do I do if I decide to get out? Can I get a good civilian job with the military residency training? From the perspective of a military spouse dealing with the Naval Hospi...

my day at a commercial eye place...and questions
A couple months ago I needed a new glasses prescription(I usually wear contacts but wear glasses maybe 1 day a week)....it had been about 3 years since I last got a prescription, so needed another one.
Driving home from work, a saw an ad.....basic eye exams for 39.99, or advanced eye exams for 59.99. At some commercial place in a large sorta run down shopping center. 39.99? What the heck can anyone get for 39.99 these days? Gotta be a catch right?
I walk in and ask a guy wearing a polo shirt too small and no undershirt how much it will cost to get a prescription for eyeglasses? He points at the sign and says "just...

Pathology Training in the states vs. other places
Just curious about the difference between pathology training in the states and other countries and whether anyone has any opinion about that.
From what I understand the training in the states is divided into anatomical pathology or clinical pathology. Doing AP or CP only requires 3 years while doing combined AP and CP requires 4 years. But that's all I know.
Comparatively, in my country pathology training is divided into AP and CP as well. However, each require 5 years separately. Combined AP and CP is called general pathology and requires 5 years as well. Furthermore, CP is generally sub-divided into chemical, genetics...

That's like free money. Just a trivial "oh, and here is a check for 85k for something you don't even do we found lying around" type of money.
She will make more off this next year alone than I will in 4+ months. (Source: Student Doctor Network Forums)

PSF Questions
Hello there,
I'm interested in applying to PSFs next year. I'm in the third year and I am deciding between medicine and path. I have just finished my medicine rotation and I have rotated for 3 weeks in my 2nd year through surg path and hemepath.
I'll lay out my pros and cons for each below:
Things I like about medicine:
- I enjoy rounds, discussing and presenting patients and coming up with a plan.
- I enjoy conferences.
- I enjoy working with (most) patients, but there are times when it can get frustrating/depressing.
Things I dislike:
- All of the paperwork.
- Somewhat of a malignant atmosphere in my opinion (this m...

Dental therapist clueless about scope of practice (news article attached)
Saw this on dental town (link and regulations) and felt it is extremely important that the public can understand a dental therapist's mentality and quite possible, one's arrogance.
"To know that you do not know is the best.
To pretend to know when you do not know is a disease."
Lao-Tzu
Maybe the disease the therapists are trying to fill, is within themselves.
DT: At no surprise, the new dental therapy graduating class is unaware of their practice boundaries. Under the Minnesota Statute Section 150A.10., dental therapists, which Allred is, are not allowed to completed comprehensive...

Complete Uworld mastery (x3) or Mix in Kaplan?? Please Help
My exam is in Mid May. Would it be better to do UWorld as many times as I can (~ 3 times) for absolute mastery, or try to squeeze in Kaplan Qbank with less UWorld only twice or 1.5 times? I don't want to end up rushing through UWorld the 2nd time through. Any input would be appreciated :)

Can't decide between the top 3 on my rank list... help?
I've now interviewed at all of my top 5 programs, and I've decided where to put #4 and #5 with fair certainty. But I keep going back and forth between my top 3. I was hoping that somebody might be able to impart some wisdom or tell me something that I haven't considered.
Aside from getting a strong balanced general clinical training with mostly biological psychiatry but also good enough therapy training so that I'm comfortable using it when necessary (#1 priority), my main priorities are:
2. A strong academic program with substantial research opportunity in biological/medical psychiatry, particularly in either genomics o...

UQ-Ochsner Packing List for Brisbane
In conclusion...
Now, Australia is not some dinky island with only fish and coconuts necessitating you to bring every little thing you need for daily living. Brisbane is a city (2 million people). There's theater (on screen and live on stage), and orchestra, and art museums, and street festivals, and travel, and shopping. If you need something, go to K-mart (the Oz version) or Big-W (the Oz version of Wal-mart), OfficeWorks (the Oz version of OfficeMax/Staples) or the Chemist (for drugs). You'll get around on the Bus/Ferry/Train just fine, or you'll ride a bike as well. Now, there will be culture shock... and its funny whe...

Speciality that is a mix of pathology and internal medicine.
I'm interested in A LOT of specialties.. I can't really narrow it down. I was thinking since I'm really into diseases, I'd like pathology. However, pathology seem kind of boring. Looking at biopsies and I'm not into cutting up dead bodies. IM seems cool, however, seems a bit intense. Is there any speciality that I haven't considered that is a mix of the two?

Thanks to you all
I was so psyched to pursue training in pathology until perusing this forum for the last 6 months. The persistent honest negativity has finally taken its toll. Evidently a "career in pathology" is really just a euphemism for "the fast track to slitting my wrists and jumping into a hot bath" based upon the attitudes toward the field I've been reading. It's a real bummer that the field has been looking so bad lately and, arguably, for quite some time now. But as much as I'd like to say that by my NOT pursuing pathology the field will become less competitive, let's face it, some other bright eyed "uninformed" future low-paid (...

Transitioning to Rotations - Advice
I want to preempt this by saying that I'm not an MD/PhD student. I did take a year off after 2nd year to do a pathology-related fellowship, and now I'm wondering if that was a good idea. I'm in the top quartile of my class, I scored well on step 1, so I know that I'm a good test taker. However, I now feel that I'm really struggling during the shelf exams in third year. The first one, I did rather poorly on (77th percentile). I expected that, though. I just took the IM shelf on Friday, and it felt awful.
I came here to make my thread because I figured that this subsection would have the most users with similar experience. ...

Ulcerative colitis question - please help
According to UWorld question - ID#1597 [441137], a guy with a biopsy that suggests ulcerative colitis returns two weeks later, not having received treatment, with a second biopsy that shows an amelioration of pathology and decreased inflammation. The question then asks for which cytokine is most likely responsible. Answer choices were TNF-alpha, IL-1, IL-4, IL-5, IL-10, IL-12.
Answer = IL-10
62% answered correctly
I put IL-12, which 11% chose.
------
My reasoning was that FA, on p. 355, states that ulcerative colitis is a Th-TWO-mediated process, which is upregulated by IL-4, -5 and -10, -13, and downregulated by IFN-...

So I was basically forced to withdraw my 2nd year or face dismissal. Looking back I might have had a chance to appeal if I were dismissed, but because I voluntarily withdrew I can't be re-admitted unless I re-applied, and the dean wouldn't say it was likely for me to get back in.
I was on academic probation when i got very sick, and ended up doing terrible on a round of exams with virtually no chance of passing, so it was either withdraw or dismissal hearing.

Any University of Mississippi studentsn on here that care to comment on the program? To others, would you consider enrolling in this type of program in your own state if such a thing existed? For me, the answer is a simple no, for two reasons. 1) I'm a pathologist, and this program probably is only for FM, IM, or gen peds. 2) I'm in a minority group, and just wouldn't be willing to live and raise my kids without a community of my group.
